I guess the same question? It’s freezing here in Eastern USA NYC. But a small hanging air conditioner would be cheaper here then a Chiller. But I never even seen chiller’s for sale after Led lights came into the hobby.

Heya and thanks for watching and leaving the comment. People do use aircon, but it doesn’t often cut it. We live in a (subtropical) climate where it seems at least half the year, max daily temps are averaging hotter than acceptable (nearer to and above 30 degrees C - 86 F. ) Summers are long and often closer to 40 C / 104 F. Standard ratings on Chillers will control up to 10 degrees cooler than ambient room temperatures, so most people who are serious about their tank will use overrated chillers to keep it in the low risk temp zone. Irrespective of ambient temperatures, reef tanks get hot from the heat generated by wavemakers, pumps and even LED lights too. Also, price is worthwhile considering… Not sure of the differences in our electricity prices between our continents, but the energy required to chill a reef tank in summer would be higher using air conditioning than using a well positioned chiller. The chiller efficiently controls the temp within the reef true to goal with minimal fluctuations. Reefers caring for carefully curated coral displays would certainly not want to take that kind of risk. On the plus side, we don’t have to deal with the cold here. (but sadly, I have never ever seen snow in real life either). :) Ania

Hard to say, they’re both good. If you’re looking at doing a system with all the gear the same brand and made to suit the tank (skimmer, roller, lights, pump, doser) you can’t beat Red Sea. Cam

It was the old sand, and I usually add it before the water. I think we added it after the water because at one point we were planning to not use it at all. If you rinse it definitely use old tank water or natural seawater. Cam

Yes we did, it was pretty clean. If it’s dirty we’ll sometimes rinse in natural seawater before adding to the new tank. Cam
