I think if I went away on a business trip an whilst I was away my wife insulated the garage and added outlets and did donuts in my car I would sit on the floor of my garage and cry tears of pure happiness.

Each time I watch one of your videos, I learn just a tiny bit more of who you are and the talents you are blessed with. This video really touched my heart as it reveals so much of who you are. This was posted years ago, but I want to write that, as a woman doing DIY home improvements, I was very happy to see this! While I am still strong for my age.... getting older has made me (1) a little weaker, and (2) more concerned with even small injuries. Thus, I need find more creative ways to maneuver heavy/cumbersome things. You are very strong, but it was awesome to see some of the ways you compensated for (1) working alone and (2) perhaps not being a hulk. Well done!

You're more handy then me, so I am bound to struggle a little, but I'm excited to give it a shot. For lighting suggestions - I used the LED 4' shop lights that Costco carries (on sale $34 each!) in my shop and it made a WORLD of difference. I replaced every 8' Florescent with 2x4' LEDs for a total of 16 and it is as bright as day ... or brighter in there now. Huge benefits also is no matter how cold it is in there they come on instantly and there is no flicker or annoying buzz. Instead of hard wiring them in I converted the existing hard wires to outlet banks and then just plugged them in. That way I now have ceiling outlets throughout my shop now also that I use to drop cords down when needed although it is a 12ft ceiling so I have to stand on the bench or use a ladder if I decide to go that route.
@shill1444
@shill1444 Жыл бұрын
Agreed. Eh yo I just bought four of these and now they are about $37 and you can actually connect them together so I'm only using one cord to plug them into ONE Outlet. Oh yeah and they are motion activated. Great post. Thanks for the info bruh.

The picture you have in the garage is my most favorite & dear to my heart. I actually have it on a wooden plaque along with the woman praying too. They used to hang in my grandparents kitchen above the stove & that's where I have them in my home. As always, great job April. A suggestion, that might save you some time and effort on the electrical - Mark all the box locations first, drill your holes and run the wiring. It's code to staple them to the studs - 8" from top and 6" from box. Run your romex (12/2 for 20A, 14/2 for 15A) and leave about 8" excess past your marks. Nail on your boxes and strip that 8" excess. This makes it easier to put into the box. Make sure the end where its stripped just fits into the box. Staple 6" from each box. Making up the boxes is neater and faster now and you won't have to stick a knife inside to strip the material and make a mess or cut your finger. now just bend the b&w's up, twist your grounds leaving a pigtail and connect your receptacles. I would have used two 2-gang boxes on each wall instead of 4 or more 1-gang so theres less work. 2 receptacles in each box, 4 plugs in 1 location, means less wiring, staples, boxes, cuts and sheetrock holes to measure. Keep up the good work!

So I started this project in my garage, put in some awesome rockwool insulation and a couple new outlets, only to find out at the 11th hour that this doesn't remotely meet fire code. Attached garages with a shared wall to the living parts of a house need a 1-hour fire barrier; OSB does not provide this at all... should a fire in the garage start, insurance will give you nothing. LP FlameBlock is a fire rated OSB, but other than that, you need a 5/8" gypsum board on the walls. Just FYI...

@@GregK9 Code here says any wall carrying structural members must be covered in Fire rock. So in my house this consists of floor supports of above bedrooms. Since all walls here are supporting a roof in common with house, code may require all walls.

April, I didn't expect that in the end, I'm glad I watched the whole way through! By the way, those tires are expensive, but you more than made up for it with all your work in the garage.

April, first of all, well done on the install...and donuts! second, i noticed the picture you had hanging on the wall of the old man praying before a meal. I believe its called "Our Daily Bread" and is by far one of my favorites. Mine hangs in our dining room. So cool to see another one. Take care and good luck with your future projects

Nice job. It looks like the electrical won't be up to code however. Did you staple any of the wires to the studs? The blue PVC 1 gang boxes also don't really have clamping connectors from what I've seen. It would just take a good tug on the cable from the attic to pull it out... which is why the electrical codes exist.

Did you check with the local building inspector to see if OSB is up to code (fire rated) for garages? Also, technically, you are extending electrical circuits and that does require an electrical permit. If, God forbid, you had a fire your insurance company may reject your claim. Love your spirit and what you do! Keep it up!
