Dr. Grande used the CAGE technique in this situation really well by asking if she has ever tried to Cut down her drink, Annoyed by others criticizing her drinking, if she every felt Guilt, and if she needed at Eye opener in the morning.

I think it is very beneficial for the counselor to do a mood check. I like how the counselor asked the client how her mood is affected after she consumes alcohol. I think it helps to get an idea of how a client views themselves which is very important to know when creating a treatment plan. The intake was very structured, a lot of information was gathered in just a short period of time.

Very good video! I thought the counselor was very thorough during this substance use appraisal and at the end he thanked the client for answering the questions

Interesting to see this. The client was very open in her substance use disclosure and Dr. Grande was very straight forward with his questioning. I appreciate how Dr. Grande is nonjudgmental in his approach, but acknowledges that others in the client's life probably do judge her. And I like how he does ask for client input and makes her part of the process.

I agree. I love the way Dr. Grande handled this, he is honest and direct but nonjudgmental. That can be a difficult balance.

I LOVE these videos!!!!! I see a counselor, not for suicidal thoughts, or major depression, but I've been in and out of hospitals all my life, and I have a terminally illness, so I have a lot of PTSD. So I have an interest in these types of videos.

This is a good video, I like how she initially began by saying that she only drank a bit. But Dr., grande was able to get her to talk about her substance use in grater detail which revealed more use then previously described.

The intake was very informative, I very much appreciate the tone of voice, it came off as nonjudgemental which is something that is important when building a rapport with clients.

I think it was helpful at the end that Dr. Grande gave the client an opportunity to add anything that was not covered.

When discussing a topic like this it is important for the counselor to remain non-judgmental. The video shows a good example of that.

I agree! By the counselor being non judgmental I felt the client was comfortable enough to share openly.

Great history intake in putting the quantity and frequency of substance use with the emotional and interpersonal component.

I thought it was good that the client asked if she would be okay talking about substance use. I liked how the counselor asked for detail about the size of the alcohol, the type of alcohol, and how much she drinks it. I thought it was important that he asked why she drinks but was nonjudgmental in her responses. He remained neutral throughout the session and the client was able to disclose her information. I liked the questions he asked and how he asked them in a caring yet matter of fact manner.

Being non-judgmental is fundamental in counseling and Dr. Grande did a great job of remaining neutral. Asking about alcohol amount, times per day, duration of the drinking, and mood helped the counselor get accurate information to best assess and treat her.

I noticed that the client appeared nervous and took a deep breath when the counselor asked if she had ever tried to cut back on her substance use or drinking. I really love how the counselor was able to probe the client and discover that her drinking was linked to stress at her job. I also liked how the counselor asked if there was family history of substance abuse as well.

Ofcourse an assessment wouldn’t be complete without having a history check...

It was interesting to see that once Dr. Grande begins to dig the clients open more about her actual substance use.

I agree and this video also helped me to see areas that I forgot to include in my own intake interview.

This part of the assessment yielded much information about the client’s drug and alcohol history and how it affects her life. I would imagine that many clients are not so forthcoming during an initial assessment. Dr. Grande’s non judgmental tone likely aided in the client being so open.

i think in this video there was a little bit more probing and the client offered more information when there was a little probing

This client appeared very willing to discuss her drug use. I imagine this intake would have looked very differently had she been defensive or had Dr Grande showed any hint of criticism or judgement of her behavior.

it all depends often on if they want the treatment or are there due to reasons such as a court order or a family member threatening to cut off support.

CAGE C - Have you ever tried to cut back on your use of chemicals? A - Have you ever feel been annoyed by people who criticize your substance use? G - Have you ever felt guilty about your substance use behavior? E - Have you ever used alcohol or other drugs as an eye opener to get going after a heavy night of use?

This is outdated in terms of client based care. Writing down information for one. This does not occur in the current State guidelines for Client centered care. It's good, but would be a concern for an auditor from the state.
