This truck had multiple issues that we solved at the same time with this job, the lower intake was leaking antifreeze and the distributor was out of adjustment. Included below is a link to my video where I show how to make the distributor adjustable.

Ok, started yesterday, removed lots of stuff. I was able to move the ac bracket forward and left the power steering pump on the bracket. Old gasket was destroyed and had that small leak for a few years so it left some corrosion she small pitting. I used my scotch pad on my air grinder to clean it up and being careful not to gouge it. Just clean slightly and looks good. I installed the new valve cover gaskets on with the new grommets, and did the same for the intake gasket. The kit said do not used and rtv. So I didn't only on the front and back rails.. everything is looking good and slowly putting things back together, the only issue I'm having is that the old fuel o-rings. I'm going to put new ones on there and my gasket kit Fel-pro MS 98002 T. It comes with o-rings and the 2 for the fuel lines look just like what's in my kit. small and little bigger, but they are black and I think the old ones look brown.. buna o-rings are usually black and good for oil and viton is brown good for fuel. I'm not sure if I should use the new black ones? The kit didn't say where they go... Thanks 👍

There’s o-rings on the flare fittings in the back and also on the tubes that go down in the injector pack, I rarely replace them unless they’re already leaking as aftermarket are sometimes not right.

I put a new pump on my 2002 chevy and last week the coolant leaked out. Thinking it was the pump but i had a mechanic check it out and said it was the intake manifold gasket because he would squish the radiator hose and can see it gush out on the left side of the engine on top. So hoping its that, Ill be using this video as a reference and hoping that ill be able to fix it myself.

Glad it’ll help, indexing that dizzy is the only part that’s tricky and requires a computer but if it’s close it’ll run.

@@ghouliesgarage3922 you can, they’re usually within a couple degrees new but mainly the timing problems are chain stretch, add another 2-5 degrees

Great video! I'm getting ready to change mine because I can see very small leak coming from mine. Question did you put any extra rtv on each side of the gaskets coolant passages, where they mate up to the intake to the head ? Thanks

Not normally, the only one I ever did over did need it though. The customer had done them himself and it had severe pitting around the coolant ports, I pulled it apart and put a VERY light skim of Right Stuff around just the rear ports, leading down to where I ran a bead across the rear wall of the block.

Check the kit, some come with valve cover gaskets, I know the V-8 kit does because you have to pull one side to get the intake out, I don’t remember on the 4.3.@@Giovanni_Adventures

I use “Right Stuff”, etc is ok but it’s more troublesome to use, has to be perfect

Hey boss i have a 2006 c1500 4.3 v6 that is bad.. i bough a 2003 4.3 c1500( supposedly)but the new one has a egr and exhaust valve.. i was wondering shoul i swap the intake that was on mine or just call it good. Thanks in advanced

I would swap the intake to keep the computer happy and ensure it has the new metal gaskets so you don’t have to come back and do those later

My dads GMC 1500 is in the shop now for the same thing. The intake was leaking coolant. 2001 truck that has 82,00 miles on the 4.3. Same plastic gaskets. 1,030 dollars.

It usually doesn’t but it can, I’ve had them leaking a very large amount in the oil before due to a bad gasket.

I have an 02 chevy astro van and the mechanic told me it would cost me 1800.00 to do this also put in a water pump, does that seem right. Please let me know.

It’s higher for a van, and labor in less rural areas can be triple what it is here, this job costs around $500-$600 here including some extras. I can easily see it going up to that price if their labor is $200 and their markup is double or triple. Not saying they’re cheating you, cost of doing business might be that high around there.

I started to have air in my coolant system. I can hear the gurgling in my dash. Today I notice a puddle of coolant by the lower manifold. Could extreme cold cause the issue? This happen on Sunday we had -20 temperature I woke up to warm my truck up and the same day I started to hear that gurgling.

Cold temps can reveal the problem, but the cause is the broken gasket…the cold shrinks it and makes it leak quicker than it would in normal circumstances.

@@bulldogsautomotiveadventur4387 I got ya! Ima have to do a pressure test tomorrow hopefully is something easier the intake gasket. But today I spotted a little puddle of coolant right around the edge of the intake. It’s not over heating at the moment or any oil in my coolant. Hopefully is not too far gone. You cant just put piston 1 at tdc to pull the distributer? Or is that just to gain adjustability?

I usually don’t, I just mark the rotor for reassembly…I grind the distributor body to gain adjustability as these are locked.

One last question! What type and brand of gasket would you recommend.? I head you say get a steel one are those available in local car parts stores ? Or have to be order.?

They’re available local, fel-pro makes them, parts store should know what you’re looking for.

@@Junior-ko6gg check your power outlet/cig lighter fuse, cheap phone chargers tend to short out and blow that fuse and that’s what usually powers the diag port.

Only if it’s low, would check to make sure the fins on the rad aren’t plugged up, this one had that issue also and I had a video of cleaning it out

Pretty sure this is my issue on my 4.3 in my 1500. Just started getting coolant on the intake just under the a/c pump area, cant see exactly where, but can see some bubbles coming ontop of the intake right by that intake bolt under the a/c unit. How much do you generally charge? I know your not in my area, but the cost should be similar here for this job. I can do it. just not sure I want to do it. lol

You can do everything except reset the index on the cam, if there’s no slack in the timing chain it shouldn’t require adjustment as it’s supposed to be “locked”.

Very doubtful, but not impossible, if the throttle plate is closed I would listen for a large vacuum leak, or iac motor, it’s also possible that it has a hose off to the brake booster or a bad booster. A leak big enough to cause that high of an idle should be easy to hear.

@@bulldogsautomotiveadventur4387 thanks.. I've replaced ever sensor, tps iac maf temp plugs cap rotor. I did find a broken hose from the pcv and fixed it. No change. Although my trouble did go away. I can't hear any leaks. How would I know if the break booster is bad? It stops fine lol 🤷. I love and hate this 4.3 🙃

It would have an audible sucking sound under the dash if the booster was bad, sound might change with your foot on the brake. If you don’t hear a leak then pull the oil fill and feel if there’s vacuum in the crankcase, that would indicate a bad intake gasket sucking air from inside the engine. Smoke machine would be best to find the leak if you have access to one.

Dude I would much rather just loosen the bracket bolts and slide the bracket out a ½ in to clear the bolt but that's just me...

You can’t adjust the distributor on these engines. It slides in place and that’s it.

If you can adjust it on a vortec then you’ve not got it sitting all the way in place. The timing is ran off the computer. You drop it in at TDC and that’s it. I just put one in tonight it and it went right in place and won’t adjust unless you pull it out of the block.
