GCSE Geography Integrated Transport System example. Case Study video. Leeds is the largest city in Western Europe without a mass transit system. But it's not all bad. This GCSE Geography video investigates the Integrated Transport System in the city, looking at the current provision and outlines future plans. It carefully matches the AQA Geography specification and is ideal for lessons and GCSE Geography revision.

My father's family were Dutch, from the City of Breda (where I was a zygote). I visit the country often. UK could learn a lot about integrated transport from the Netherlands, where it is possible to buy a ticket from home to destination, knowing that you will arrive on time. And when I say "From home" I mean just that - the taxi can be booked as part of the ticket. The needy also get subsidised transport. An aunt, who was disabled and on benefits, got her transport free - including taxis.

In addition London has got new additions to the transport system, such as The Docklands Light Railway, Crossrail, Thameslink and the new Overground Electric System. In the outer suburbs there is also the Croydon Tram. London also has HS1 and is getting HS2 to Birmingham.

Very interesting video. It would be nice to see Leeds with some sort of tram system, alas it doesn't seem to be destined for Leeds to gain one. One of the issues with Leeds is the transport links, a tram/rail connection to L And B airport would be very useful. Another issue is getting people to travel into Leeds in the future. With the corona issue i can see that many people who were traveling in beforehand will now be working from home. I'm not so sure that the new HS2 link will benefit Leeds as much as if we had our own tram system and better links across the pennines etc.

They are building both trams and railway stations to LBA.

When I grew up in Leeds trams were prevalent. When we lived in Middleton in the 1950s the number 12 tram was our means of getting into the city centre (to go to Woolworth's to buy an Airfix kit). It was a wonderful journey, through the woods at Middleton Park. When bus services were introduced the magic was lost. Many suburbs of Leeds, such as Belle Isle, were designed with the tram in mind. Dual carriageways had a large gap where the trams ran, unimpeded by normal traffic. Such isolation of public transport, ideal as it would be, would be impossible today.

Covid will blow over. Any body that can’t see that has no common sense. It never was the end of the world and people acting like it was, was embarrassing because it showed they were easily panicked and don’t bother to research. And it’s the same with travel and work, over time it will be seen that sitting in a silo at home does not build teams, it doesn’t unite a company to a common aim and even worse, transferring knowledge and training is very hard remotely as I’ve found. It’s hard to share info on multiple screens at once when needing to show stuff. My place you come in for a minimum 3 days a week and can choose to work from home the other 2 or you can come in all 5 days if you want. That’s more likely to be what happens.

The new station on the Harrogate line is not a good choice as passengers from Bradford need to go via Leeds, . It would provide better connectivity for more passengers to make the Guiseley Station the bus link to the Airport.

What integration? They built the bus station a 15-20 minute walk from the train station. And even when loads of land became available around the train station, they built offices and hotels on it. Ridiculous.

Historically Leeds suffered from two things that other northern cities like Sheffield, Manchester, Liverpool and Newcastle didn't. First for decades Leeds council switched between Labour and Conservative so neither side were willing to commit to something the other side could then claim credit for. Second the Germans didn't do a clearance of Leeds many narrow streets, so it is very difficult to do anything in transport without somebody facing major upheaval. As soon as a scheme is suggested a local action group is formed to stop anything happen in that area. While some people have suggested Leeds has an underground built the geology of the city would make this prohibitively expensive and with the south of the city riddled with old mineworks cost overruns could quickly mount. While I agree with the new station at Thorpe Park, when built it will cause even more problems for commuters at Cross Gates who already have problems using trains during the rush hour. I would like to see the old Marsh Lane station reopened and the old goods yard there converted into a full station with bay platforms. Trains could be held there during the day and used during rush hours to the East of the city and make train travel a viable option for people working to the east side of the city centre. I would also like to see a gondola loop from the station to the bus station and as suggested the Marsh Lane station. Passengers could access the gondolas at the City Station and pass along boar lane and the market to the bus station then onto Marsh Lane. There could also be a loop going up Park Lane then down the Headrow and Eastgate to the bus station. This would also give people the opportunity to see the fine architecture of the buildings at a higher level.

Your suggestion of using the Marsh Lane Station is a good one Stephen. It is closer to the city bus station too. Your gondola idea is immense! I would love to take that ride! I take your point about some of the narrow streets but I do think a mass transit system following the old tram system would be possible. It is a real pity the council have never achieved the introduction of an urban train or tram system in recent decades. The park and ride facilities are a great introduction but still rely upon cars. As the city centre enlarges and car access reduces, it may make it difficult for some people to make their way there.

If only the conservative councils plan for building 3 underground tram tunnels in the city centre went ahead in the 1950s. Combined with the fact that the majority of trams outside the city centre were on their own right of way would have meant a fantastic public transport network in Leeds.

Nice video! Highlights what Leeds has and what is unfortunately lacking in the mass transit department. Do you think the Inner Ring Road and the city's pledge to be the 'Motorway city of the Seventies' had a significant impact with regards to public transport initiatives in the area? Also, interesting to watch this now that the eastern leg of HS2 has been confirmed as scrapped...

Thank you for commenting. I think you are probably right. The Inner Ring Road was very forward thinking and the city still benefits from it. A mass transit system is needed to match the aspirations and needs of the city however.

The cycle routes through Leeds have an irritating number of red traffic lights or cycle crossings of roads requiring the traveller to stop constantly. Until electric bikes are much cheaper people are not going to start regularly cycling due to issues like this among others.

People abandoning cars for bicycles is just a pipe dream. Bicycles just aren't practical or realistic. You get filthy in winter, you can't carry luggage or passengers, you can't travel long distances. Town planners have this ridiculous obsession about bicycles but it's a total waste of money building cycle lanes.
@hotbeefo
@hotbeefo Жыл бұрын
@@johntate5050 you will never replace every journey with cycling but that's not the point. Even if you could get people to cycle 20% of the time it would be a massive benefit to congestion, health and reducing emissions.
