Inflammatory bowel disease, or IBD, is estimated to impact more than 2 million Americans. This term encompasses different disorders relating to inflammation in the digestive tract, such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. And up until now, traditional gastroenterology took a linear view of treatment options, ignoring the impacts of diet and lifestyle, while many patients continued to struggle.
Today’s guest on The Doctor’s Farmacy, Dr. Miguel Regueiro, is part of the positive shift happening in the conventional approach to IBD. Dr. Regueiro is the chair of Cleveland Clinic’s Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology; his main clinical and research interest is IBD, with a focus on the natural course of these diseases and postoperative prevention of Crohn’s disease. Recently, he has been involved in developing new models of healthcare, including the first-of-its kind specialty medical home for IBD. This innovative healthcare delivery system has defined the concept of specialty medical home and will lead to further clinical programs and investigation of alternative models of care.

I receive far too many e-mails inviting me to join a specific health summit. Quite often I sign up for them and attend at least a few interviews - I started unsubscribing to many of the providers because I always come back to Dr. Hyman's interviews. I learn so much and I believe his information is science based. Thank you Dr. Hyman for having such a big heart.

This is a fascinating subject to me and something I strongly believe in for optimum health. I"m suffering from some mystery symptoms and struggling to find the root cause of my issues. I"m not near the Cleveland Clinic; unfortunately, and wonder if you can recommend a similar type of clinic/specialist in the Seattle area? Thank you in advance for your informative podcasts and all you do to help keep us informed.

Dr Hyman How did you heal the Ulcerative Colitis patient? Can you please share more information on this?🙏

Regarding FMT for Ulcerative Colitis, it currently has an efficacy similar to biologic drugs (I believe ~20% of people improve). I participated in an FMT study earlier this year and unfortunately it didn't improve my UC. Unfortunately at this point there is still so much unknown about the microbiome, so this treatment is more of a "spray and pray" - you get samples from random healthy donors. Maybe in the future when we've learned more we'll be able to match a recipient with the correct donor for their given deficiency.

I’m surprised that there was no mention of GMO’s or glyphosate? It seems apparent that since the 1990’s, as GMO’s and glyphosate use increased- digestive issues and also increased. Has any listened to Zack Bush?

Rj, From listening to Dr Hyman many times I can confirm that he is very cognizant of the impact of toxins in our food source though they may not have mentioned it here.

I've been following Dr. Hyman since I discovered Functional medicine. I'm now a Functional Nutritionist with IBD. It became a way for me to heal. However, I have done almost everything to be in remission as long as I can and diet (which I have tried every single one) wasn't it for me. I'd love to hear a conversation about ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANT bacteria or recurring bacteria that causes/triggers FLARES in IBD. Any resources are welcomed. Thank you!

Antibiotics triggered c.diff in my husband (24 years after UC diagnoses). Left him with a non healing fistula. The infection the antibiotics were for turned out to be an allergic reaction to lavender essential oil.

I have to mention here that I was enjoying this podcast up until Dr. Regueiro stated that Dr. Hyman has "much more expertise" than a dietitian when it comes to food and the diet. As a Registered and Licensed Dietitian I am extremely offended by this. Is he aware that Dietitians complete four years of schooling in Nutrition and Dietetics plus a 1-2 year required practicing internship before they are even allowed to sit for their Registration Examination? Is he also aware of their continuing education requirements- all of which much be in Nutrition in order to maintain their registration in licensure? I understand that Dr. Hyman is very knowledgeable in his field and that he takes the initiative to understand more abo0ut Nutrition than most other physicians- BUT please don't discredit the fact that a Dietitian is the true expert in Nutrition and plays a vital role in helping patients manage ands understand diet and the body. I see Dr. Hyman and the Dietitian and two very complimentary professionals that together can make a difference in the lives of patients. Thanks for the insult Dr. Regueiro.

Ado, its unfortunate you are feeling offended, I seriously doubt that any insult was intended by either of these truly committed physicians who are stepping ahead of many others in pursuit of true health for their clientele, perhaps you need to look within as to why you are feeling defensive? I know that there are sites who would embrace anything positive you have to add to the conversation, start with contacting one or both of these men.

Ado1113 I am sorry but it doesn't matter how many yrs you had to sweat through college and then internship and how much student debt you acquired, b/c what we were taught a few decades ago doesn't apply anymore! I studied at a university in Europe. In Europe the US is looked upon as a God, everything which comes from the US is applied. I learned the food pyramid and the plate model and to eat 70% of energy from carbs. I believed all the bs, followed it and that's how I got sick! Luckily, I didn't have student debt b/c our education is financed over taxes, so I feel for you! I moved to the US 20 yrs ago and what I learned here by following f-u-n-c-t-i-o-n-a-l medicine doctors is the exact opposite of what I was taught in my nutrition program! I now follow a l-o-w carb diet, LCD! After I graduated I taught classes in weight loss and was surprised that my students didn't lose weight. But I only taught them what I was taught and that obviously doesn't work! Tons of bread and pasta and starchy potatoes, and sugary breakfast cereals, and 3 fruits a day is obviously way too much sugar, converting to fat and obesity. I wish I had known about Keto diet 30 yrs ago! 160 MILLION Americans are obese! How come? B/c the official narrative of a good diet is completely wrong! Who propagates the lies? The food industry, of course, to make a buck, but who else??? The health care industry which you are part of! (I am not, I am already retired, and I am glad to say I never worked with nutrition/food in this country, spreading misinformation and ill health!) In my perception it is not how much you learned but w-h-a-t you learned that makes the difference! And what you learned doesn't hold water, thanks to too much propaganda and corruption within the system!

I doubt he meant any insult. I have Crohns and saw a dietitian to help me with the Specific Carbohydrate diet, which has been around for almost 80 years to treat many diseases, and the person had never heard of it. Just because you went to school for it doesn't mean you know everything

My husband has UC and has had many weeks in the hospital. Every single time the dietician comes in and tells him to drink Ensure and then gives him the menu of approved foods for his condition: popsicles, milk shakes, ice cream,, chicken broth (which is water and bouillon cubes) and getting nutrients from Ensure. All horrid stuff for someone can't tolerate milk and is dying due to the lack of intestine function. Add to that the doctor whispering to me to go get him fast food as the hospital food disgusting. There is a reason those of us with experience have a lack of respect for the dieticians we have dealt with.
