you never talked about why the building shook when he turned on the oscillator. From what I understand, it's because everything has a frequency and if you get really close to that frequency, you can excite and cause waves through that object. I'm not sure if I explained it correctly but it's a lot like the singing bowls or a wine glass when you use it to make sound.

Yeah it's the resonant frequency of a material. The same thing that makes crystal glasses resonate (vibrate) when you run your finger around the rim

This is awesome; would love to see more tesla patents animated to show the dynamic processes taking place. I believe his turbine is an improvement of this concept; by eliminating the 180 degree reversals, and instead having a rotor which spins in circles; much more energy can be extracted from mechanical force.

There is functional oscilator here in Serbia. We have a guy that knows soo much about Nikola Tesla that director from a Tesla US museum came to his home for his notes, knowledge, etc. I went to his house and had an opportunity to play with the device.

you can calibrate your x and y to print perfect cubes and cylinders. quick google search will help.. after about 5 tries you should get it perfect.. and accurate.. as long as you are not over extruding .. steps are key there.

Paul Cole ☆ Where can i find out how to build a MIG Welder 3D Printer? We had a couple bore welders that would build up strings of wire bead that the machinists would cut to spec. "Laser Suntered" sounds cool, but SpaceX moves towards reusable & cheaper, so wireless can be adapted easily to create exhaust nozzles for rocket engines with literally "No Upper Limit!"

Even very high precision CNC mills generate a slight bit of eclipse. At the end of the day the a circle on a machine like this is really the combination of two linear axises. When you come to the top and bottom or left and right ends of the axises the machine head has inertia and can't come to a dead stop instantly which typically results in some error. Hence why things which require high precision circular features often times use drills and reamers to accomplish this. You can use circular interpolation but the error will always be there.

Cool. This was the first video of yours I've come across. I like the comedic properties you use instead of weighing it down in complex mathematics. This has a very similar mechanism to an air file. They work almost exactly the same way by using a piston that redirects air based on its position in order to oscillate, only here the oscillation is used to file away material rather than power a generator. Also you can tune a printer in order to prevent them from printing ovals but it can be very tedious and may not be to the level of accuracy you need for an air tight fit

The way you have the magnets oriented, the magnetic field is parallel to the windings so they don't really cut thru the windings much. You should try orienting the magnets 90 degrees so the magnetic field cuts thru the windings for their entire length of travel instead of only at the extreme ends of the oscillation.

Something that nobody has pointed out yet, the device mechanism sounds like that of an old steam or compressed air jack hammer. Tesla just put a magnet and coil on a jack hammer.

Also to make piston heavier you can have just simple holes for additional metal to be attached, or even magnets to push piston out from center and top piston out of corners :)

If you can adjust the restoring spring force on either side of the spring piston, you can change the operating frequency of the resonant system to tune it to the resonant frequency of a structure, which is what Tesla discovered when he set the entire block into an earthquake. You can also tune it by adjusting mass elements attached to it, but doing that to an assembly while it is operating isn't easy.

I, too, am a huge fan of Tesla and his works. I started my life as a curious child, eventually learned about electricity, later learned how to make things out of wood and steel amongst other things, I then ended up going back to school for electrical engineering. Life is an interesting journey, and you never know where you'll end up, or how your experiences of today might influence tomorrow.

Attention. At the time of the student Tesla, the generators (Dynamo) and commutator DC engines were already known. Tesla's "oscillation" machine was never realized. Tesla only suggested the way of direct conversion of the oscillating movement of the steam engine without the use of the crankshaft and the flywheel. What caused a small earthquake was a rotary regulator using cams that were to become a replacement for the original Watt regulator.

You need to alternate the magnets, so that they are north south alternating. It seems that instead you have them arranged all with the same polarity, which will give you less variance in the change of the alternating magnetic field.

@Integza the reason you are stopping in the middle isn't due solely to weight based inertia but instead is due to not having the air spring on the same shaft. The spring would have imparted force at the end of each stroke that wouldn't be countered until it reached near the end of the next stroke meaning while there would be zero imparted force at the center it would have already been made to move both by the air flow and the spring stored power. Additionally, the cause of the 'earthquake' effect is actually due to the outlet hole on his original design. This can be thought of as similar to a woofer cone where the linear oscillating motion interrupts the airflow causing essentially pulsed air to get pushed into the ground (which the system was originally designed to be bolted to in order to prevent the vibration from physically moving the device.) which if it reaches mechanical resonance with the design of an structure will very easily lead to catastrophic failure. A simple analog is if you just take a big sub (at least 15") and point it at the ground with enough clearance to still allow open airflow, then using a frequency generator and amplifier run it at different frequencies ranging from

7:02 . I think it's not the weight that is being used to move the piston past center to trigger the second oscillation but rather the section you mentioned earlier which you are missing from your first tries. The Spring Piston is there to make sure the device never rests in the central position by the exact mechanism you talked about earlier, once its in motion it dose not want to stop and as such pushes the second main piston area into the second stage of the injection. Love your stuff and that you include the not working parts and even make them enjoyable in your clips :)

"In reality" it absolutely could destroy any building. The scary thing, it's probably adjustable, a little weight here, a little less there. You probably could get any frequency you wanted.

In reality, NO. It could not. Stop letting the conspiracy industry fill your mind with garbage. If you can't even understand why it doesn't work, you need to swallow your pride, quit being so lazy, and start learning from the bottom up, instead of fantasising about impossible crap. Even Tesla knew it was BS. It was one of many dumb patents he filed in protest at the patent office not needing any kind of proof of efficacy in order to award patents. Some of which are so blatantly obviously a troll, that the conspiracy industry won't even mention them, and rely on their target demographic not being honest enough to discover them.

It has a lot in common with a phase locked loop; electronic circuits very good at oscillating at specific frequencies. Yes, the piston moves up and down, but the housing, attached to the building, is moving as well. Piston goes up, there is a small 'recoil' pushing housing down. Newton said something about this. The slight movement of the housing+beams is enough to subtlety change the timing of the steam-valves opening and closing. This in turn affects motion of the piston. Positive feedback. If the beam is flexing up, the valves are in a different place than when the beam is flexing down. There are two oscillators operating at once; the piston and the housing+steel beams. The resonant frequency of the steel beams in the building can quickly be 'found' as a phase relationship because the oscillators.

2:42 ahhh I see they are using the almost mythical "piston return spring" in this application. I just had to replace mine in my Honda at the very trusted mechanic down the block for $3,500. He said it was a friend price.

This kind of in piston valve is pretty common on Lego projects. You can increase inertia by connecting it to a flywheel. The interesting thing is this design is reversible! You can either connect the inlet to positive or negative pressures relative to the atmosphere. Of course, the behavior would not the exactly the same. The flywheel's inertia also works as part of the "restorative force" of the cycle, instead of a spring...

You could have used the drill method but you need to make sure the drill doesn't move and you use a grinding stone/file rather than sand paper. Basically you are making a very basic lathe. To get something perfectly round you need the cutting surface to not move and the spinning axis to be as stable, with as little deviation as possible. For truing up the cylinder walls you could do it a number of way but something like a cylinder bore for an rebuilding an engine would be cheap and effective and more accurate if you don't have a drill press. *Tip Also if you put your extruded parts into sealed container with acetone in it but make sure the item isn't in the liquid, the fumes will smooth out rough surfaces and give your parts a shine.

You could have fixed your cylinder mass issue by leaving a void in the cylinder and filling it with lead (melting and shaping lead is *super* easy). Sig Sauer did something similar with their polymer pistol the X5 Legion. They infused the polymer with a powdered tungsten to increase its mass (and thus its weight).

I built one of these 7years ago out of stainless and brass for fun. I did not use round magnets. I used 3 earth bar magnets and had each pass a steel bars made of plates and wire wrapped around each sticking out sideways like in his design. It actually makes about 35 volts to charge a cap bank like was intended

Similar "inversed" Designs are used as linear actuators and linear compressors, f.e. in fridges. I would say, compressors are reversed steam engines.

There are products that use half of the oscillating motor to generate a small amount of energy for a flashlight. Pretty neat way to power one for when batteries aren’t an option.
