The best part is, that Pentium G3258 performed very well and it's only $75. I still remember, my first CPU was Pentium 4, way back 2001. This is just amazing in terms of price and performance. :)

Still the over clocking boards aren't cheap, if intel had decent Z87/97 boards for under a hundred bucks I can see where its going but for about the same price I can get a 6 core amd fx chip and a msi 970 board that overclocks well.
@MarshalBeard
@MarshalBeard 10 жыл бұрын
Alexinnj You can get a B/H board to overclock now too. It changed in the 9 series. And, a cheap Intel board will overclock within 100MHz of the highest end Intel board. With AMD motherboards, it's required to get a decent one in order for it to overclock well. As long as the Intel motherboard can overclock, it will overclock really well. However, AMD is becoming like that too now. 2 years ago it was a completely different story. EDIT: The MSI H97 board only costs 80$ and has OC Genie 4.

lol why would you buy a 300$ cpu for gaming only anyway? The cpu only matters to a point in games and amd has good athlon offers for that price point too, although the pentium k for what I know currently has the advantage thanks to its high oc capabilities. Just give amd a few months and they'll come up with a crazy unlocked athlon themselves, you'll see.

The Policy of course it doesn't matter... if you won't put the cpu's in a system. if you do actually intend to use your cpu however, Intel can nowadays definitely give better bang for your buck in many cases. when I found out about this, I switched from AMD > Intel. of course there are a bunch more benefits, too.

OK Linus I need to tell you a short story. Back in 1995 my first job was QA Assembly for Intel. (Basically I used tweezers to take the Made In Taiwan label off and stick a Made In Ireland label in its place). Anyway, I remember working a rather busy 12 hour shift and suddenly the VP of Intel gets on the intercom, the lines halted, and all of us waiting for something. "We have just reached 100MHz on the Pentium!" It was very exciting news back then, since we were currently operating at 66MHz. After this we had a presentation in the auditorium and the VP said this (chuckles): "By the year 2000 we will have a 1 Terahertz processor." However back then we were like sure at the rate we were going, but obviously they didn't think about heat. Anyway I thought I'd share that with you and the rest of the community. It's kind of nice having Intel in your backyard, but I'm actually partial to AMD.

Anderson Adon But is simply being "better" the only contextual notion that matters? No. A 3770k is still a great processor, but if you're gaming you're liable to spend 200 dollars less to get maybe 5 frames less in a game. Spend that 200 dollars you save on a better GPU, and the framerate difference is far from a problem. Intel has a place in the world, but it's not for being cost effective.
@anderson1275
@anderson1275 10 жыл бұрын

Some stores (*cough* Microcenter...) will bundle the G3258 with a H97 board for $99. That paired with an Evo 212 @4.5ghz frosty....absolutely BALLER-STATUS for a budget build. Another point that's not brought up very often, if you want absolute silence from CPU cooling (for music production, etc), you can rock the Evo 212 completely fanless if you cap the CPU to under 55w. My spare build is G3258 running fanless at 55w with a couple of Noctuas for intake and exhaust splitting off 1 fan header using the "silent" patch cable into a "Y" splitter. The GPU is a GTX 650Ti Boost also completely fanless with an aftermarket cooler. I've got a 120gb SSD for OS/Programs and a 1TB HD for data/Steam. It's a surprisingly fast machine. Only difference compared to my main rig is media rendering time and games that benefit from more than 2 threads. But everyday use and casual gaming? Outstanding performance on a budget. I freaking LOVE the G3258.

i really really hate it when people write the model-information on the surface of the CPU ! Maybe i am to critical,but wouldn't that make a litle resist between cpu - thermal paste- cpucooler? Or even worse, the ink could get so warm, hot, boiled that it pnenetrates slowly the surface of the cpu? IDK i mean i am honest it sounds pretty dumb, but you should really consider not to fucking mark the cpu like that, when you realize that there are pretty much a million other ways to do it ;D. cheers
@Giamby986

@davemartin6452

@TracyGossett
@TracyGossett 10 жыл бұрын
Actually it's not printed, it's laser etched onto the heat shield, no it won't cause any issues with heat transfer between the heat shield and the heatsink, the thermal paste is the buffer between those two surfaces.
@mrpositronia
@mrpositronia 10 жыл бұрын
Do you have evidence that this can happen? It seems odd that ink would be a barrier between the heatsink and the CPU, especially as the thermal paste would stick to the ink exactly the same as it would to the rest of it.

Umm . . except . . . Right now we are at the stage when some of the current games require at least 3 cores or more to even run properly. (Remember that you have less ai companions in bf3 on 2, core, they dont open doors for u and shit) Some of them are specificaly optimized for high core count. ( bf3~4, mantle~things, star citizen, watchdogs, etc). Trend is for more cores and devs optimize their apps for more cores. Simple. This trend will move forward even more since both consoles are same 8 x64 cores. We will see more apps optimized almost exclusively for 4-8 cores, like star citizen. Id say in 1-2 years you will not find a AAA game that runs well or at all on 2core cpu. (especially ports). Yes, it might be cheap but with my head on the line i would never recommend it for gamer, or even anybody with medium multitasking expectations...
@GotCritified
@GotCritified 10 жыл бұрын
First of all, in non mantle supported games amd cpu will be rather bad, because their single core performance is kinda bad. Wouldn't be a problem since there is twice as many of them BUT game performance relies heavily on the 1st core speed (core0). And the first core acts like a general for other cores queuing jobs. If its shit, its shit overall. Thing is right, we have seen games that go "6gb+ ram or gtfo", and we saw "3+ cores or reduced quality (BF)", or even "4+ cores or our physics engine will kill your cpu and half your fps (Star Citizen)" Thanks to new consoles and fairly widespread 4 core usage, we will see more of these. If programmers start making "4cores or gtfo" games it wont matter how extremly fast and overclocked your dual core is, game was programmed for 4+ and it wont start. So if you instead purchased quadcore i5 you are fine, and if you purchased shitty amd cpu. . . . you are also fine yet lower fps. . . .both options beat "i cant even start the game". Then again as a gamer my choice and recommendation would be at least i5, even on a steep budget id recommend to buy i5.
@MrExplosivcorn
@MrExplosivcorn 10 жыл бұрын
I dont think you're very correct on this. As someone who has an AMD FX chip, not enough games are optimizing for more than 4 cores, if EVEN that many. Games with high entity counts like Wildstar and other big RPGs run like shit at times. I've always asked for games to be more optimized with more cores, but it hardly happens.

for those of you wondering, the pentoum is good for ONLY playing a game. no music in background or voice comms, over clocked mone to about 4.3, while it powerhouses through gtaV alone but once you open another program like skype or discord, expect your frames to not get above 40fps. If you're into LoL or csgo the pentium is the perfect processor for you. something like dota, i suggest getting a quad core

I'm not surprised the G3258 does so well. I had a G6950 (2.8GHz, not over clocked) and it was impressive considering it's lowly status on the Intel totem pole.

Bought one of these little babies for the new home server I put together today. Quite impressed with it, actually. I'm just running the stock fan (and stock clock obviously since I want the machine as reliable as possible) and no chassis fans as well as a soundproofed case - and the PSU fan only starts spinning at around 50% load and above (Corsair RM550).. Despite all this, it runs quite cool and is virtually silent even at full load. I did spend quite a bit of time with the cable management though, and there's no dedicated graphics card to decrease air flow and blow hot air inside the case, which definitely helps. Eventually I'm going to try migrating my virtual machine network (including an SQL / SCCM server which can be fairly taxing) and see how that goes. Might have to upgrade the fan, CPU and double the RAM :p

Both of these bad mofos are brilliant and it's not really fair to compare them when they're both suited for different things. Both however are at the top of their game when used for the right purposes. If I had to chose between the two I do prefer the 4790K simply because I use a lot of intensive software though if I wasn't using any and wanted to build a budget gaming rig I don't have to look further than the G3258.

i have never had an intel CPU before, but my god the temps on these chips are making me so happy that i didnt put one in my 1st build, 75c???? i would panic if my cpu was that temp! and that was watercooled! my 8320 at full load has never gone above 51c and thats with the stock cooler! when i get the hyper 212 evo later this week its going to get chilly in there lol NOW obviously iam not saying that AMD cpus are better than intel, but temperature wise, you bet they are.

It was under FULL (100%) load. I bet you've never put yours for 100% load for a while. Try and see what happens. I don't hate on AMD, no reason to do so whate so ever, but you're not being realistic here. 100% load + overclocking is not a small task for the processor AND YOUR PROCESSOR is a toy compared to this one. It's not NEARLY as powerful as this one so comparing heats between yours and this is useless.

AGAIN! i know the 8320 is not in the same league as the 4790k, i just think the 8320 has more bang for your buck.

2 cores is not enough to do multitasking. the pentium K will do okay with 1 task in hand but if you wanna multitask then the i7 is the way to go also there is more PCI express lanes in the i7 which means if you ever want to run multiple GPU's in SLI it might do it but at a loss of preformance compared to the i7 which will support up to 3 or 4 ( i cant remember) with no frame rate or performance drop. :)

With even entry level H81 motherboards now allowing overclocking of the G3258. You can get a really good low budget PC setup even with a sub $300 budget (OS not included.) =P PS. Do not use Windows 10 with the G3258, Microsoft made a code update that disregards multiplier overclocking for the G3258. Although it can be removed with a patch, that's still low for Microsoft and Intel. =/

Reason I ask is that it seems to get unstable on win10 ( and hot ) although stressing it ( 100% should be a 100% ). Its actually the reason why to downgrade. Really hope you ll tell me what OS would be best for the g3258. When you know ofcourse ;)

I wish they would have compared the temperatures from the 4770k and the 4790k. Would have been nice to see how the material was doing in a side by side comparison. It would have also been nice to see a wider range of CPU's tested just to get an overall comparison on the performance gaps of the CPUs. That G3258 is a beast, but I wonder how it will perform when games start to get better multithreaded support. But for now, its a great CPU.

the thing about the pentium is, it appeals to very low budget systems, but to overclock you need a z97/87, and most people in that price range are new to/don't want to overclock, so an i3/h97 is still cheaper overall than the pentium

This Pentium seems to be bargain buy for those who need single thread performance. Now do us a favour, over clock this thing and give us the results from f.i. Passmark or some other benchmarking test per thread. It looks as this CPU could be ideal for the many who are using software (AutoCad) that almost only make use of a single thread, as I understand it this also applies to many gamging software, but the only game I have ever played on a computer is Bridge Baron and that does not take so much CPU processing ;)
