Hello everyone. For today's video, we've got something special. An MSI GT72S 6QE Dominator Pro G, of the year 2015. That's a former high-end gaming laptop with an Intel Core i7 6700 HQ, 16GB of DDR4 memory, and an Nvidia Geforce GTX 980M. Compared to nowadays hardware, I'd classify it as a lower mid-end device 3d performance-wise. But it's still possible to handle all games on the market pretty well. Unlike the predecessors that were furnished with a CPU from the Haswell or Broadwell platform, MSI relied on the, back then, brand new Skylake architecture. Although it did not exactly stand out with higher performance in tests, its considerably lower power consumption was striking.
I have to add that the ram of this device is just single-channel despite using 2 times 8GB bars. The reason for this is that I upgrade from 8GB to 16GB but couldn't access the original slot of the already installed 8GB. Because it is placed directly below the keyboard and hard to access. So I simply added the second ram stick at the bottom of the device below the inspection hatch. So to gain dual channel ram I'd have to add another 8GB stick to the bottom below the inspection hatch.
Performance-wise there have been only 2 games, besides Cyperunk 2077, in this test that made some trouble. Apex Legends seems to be really CPU hungry especially at the beginning of a match. I wouldn't call it unplayable by any means but some FPS hick-ups were visible. However, the performance in Apex Legends is way better than in the previous season, at least on this device, in my humble opinion.
The second game that behaves weird has been Dead by Daylight. The Core i7 has somehow been downclocking itself in this title very often. This results in FPS drops. Again Dead by Daylight is very far from being unplayable but the FPS drops are clearly noticeable.
All in all, I've tested 23 games. All have been very well playable except for the 2 previously mentioned titles and Cyberpunk 2077 that I'd still call ok playable.
You might guess it already. This system clearly gets my recommendation as a gaming system in 2021. The overall performance is still ok to play even demanding titles at reduced graphical settings.
Probably you're already searching on eBay for this device. And here comes the problem. It's barely available and I couldn't find one for less than 750 Euros.
But for around 750 Euros you could also get a GTX 1650 laptop which has got around the same performance as the GTX 980M and probably a much newer CPU. So regarding the price, I can't recommend this laptop model without reservation.
There are other models with the GTX 980M on the market that are way cheaper. If you can find one for less than 550 $ or 500 Euro I think it's a bargain that you should purchase immediately.
So this has been the test of the MSI GT72S 6QE Dominator Pro G. A still pretty impressive device.
