A while back I did a video on new IPU6 cameras on the Intel Alder Lake laptops that were completely and still are useless on Linux out of the box and they're soon going to be slightly less annoying to work with.

I found the webcam problem less of an issue when I realized that I won't use it any time soon. And I have bigger problems like fan control and sleep.

About buying hardware a generation older, if you time it well, you can use certain often more business oriented stores clearing out their old stock to get a nice discount. I saved about 150EUR on my ThinkPad e585 by getting mine as they replaced it with the e595. Still took a some time for driver support to slowly catch up properly, but a great machine that has been serving me well. Went from needing kernel flags to not kernel panic to wonky sleep to sleeping more reliably than the factory Windows install.

I’m just glad I don’t have to use a webcam for anything. Can’t spy from my cameras if they don’t work lol.

Idk about others, but no/broken webcam drivers is a feature not a bug for me ;)

The problem was solved long time ago with USB Video Class (UVC). They should create a webcam with backward compatibility with uvc instead of creating a new standard.

This is not the first big mistake from Intel in regard to Alder Lake and Linux. Also the completely broken mess of their efficiency cores because Intel refused to use the ACPI-standard to point out which cores clock higher and lower. Crazy.

Oh that wasn't a problem only for Linux, they just focused on fixing it for Windows NT first.

Hans is amazing he has helped me before fixing drivers for my touch screen, he took my fork of the driver, and fixed it up while teaching some students

Doing more in userspace (or even in the kernel) instead of relying on giant firmware blobs is a good thing tbh

8:52 I bought an AMD Ryzen 6800H & AMD Radeon 6700M laptop and with a replaced Wi-Fi card, everyhing it worked out of the box. No Nvidia nonsense or Intel camera nonsense here!

to be honest, it is really hard to find an all amd laptop. The choices you got are from MSI, Asus and Acer, with MSI offering a much powerful and new gen cpu and gpu while the other, you have to stick with rx 560X. Even linux laptop OEMs doesnt even offer a full amd laptop (so much for being a linux centric laptop company)....

@Vayne Fox It was a Lenovo Legion 7 (from 2022). And yes, I agree with you that Linux OEMs need more AMD GPU options in laptops, especially considering Nvidia's 💩 drivers on Linux.

Yes Brodie, you boutchered the pronunciation of Hans de Goede. His name is Dutch. If you want to approach it then it would be somewhat close to good-the, whihc is a conjugation of the word goed (= good).

I got an 11th gen ASUS TUF. Everything works out of the box with Linux. Even suspend has no problems at all. It's a glorious laptop. ASUS TUF GAMING F17, will always recommend.

Linux is incredibly hit or miss on anything related to video devices. Neither of my capture cards work reliably with most distros.

intel being FOSS friendly and than locking their hardware like that Its a pure microsoft based move and plays along with their "camera and secure boot always on" idea. can we (linux community) just stop trying to make such borked hardware working with linux .. they just dont deserve it anyway and our efforts are better spent elsewhere ?
