Testing the Intel i7-5775C quad core CPU in 10 popular and demanding games in 2023, using an RTX 3070 discrete GPU.
In the history of Intel's modern CPUs, only one generation has been largely forgotten. The 5000 series, known by its architectural name of Broadwell, didn't see many versions released at retail. Most of those that did release were found in laptops, or in the 6000 series HEDT and v4 Xeon ranges.
There were only two models of desktop CPU available for sale; in this video, I look at the i7-5775C; a CPU that managed to be innovative even within the confines of the quad core CPU paradigm of 2015, but which Intel promptly forgot about shortly after release. Can its much-vaunted 128MB "L4 cache" help Broadwell find new life in 2023?

The 5775C walked so the 5800X3D could run. Some of the engineers behind Broadwell would go on to work on that CPU as well, which I think really shows the heritage there. You can even see some Broadwell-like behavior and design decisions in Zen3 if you go looking for it. Things like moving to a physically larger core and the extended L4 cache (7900X3D & 7950X3D).

I remember Tech Report's review of the 6700K, but it suddenly out of nowhere crowned the 5775C the winner over it. Chaos ensued as the price of the 5775C soared (up to 2X the 6700K) after that article was published. That's what the 5775C was about: the flagship LGA1150 part, a great upgrade for Haswell users, soundly beating the 6700K and 7700K in games, and maybe the 8700K too. RIP Tech Report, by the way. One of the best computer journalism sites to have ever existed.

The 3D V-cache of 2015. 10-20% improvement in a ton of games thanks to the L4 is very impressive, and even though you could as well just buy an unlocked Haswell chip for a budget rig it's good to know that you're not losing much, if anything, by picking up one of these instead if you're into oddball hardware. And aren't we all at least a little bit into oddball hardware?

i own an I7-577C, i bought it over the I7-4970k due to it's lower TDP. The 500Mhz lower clock was not an issue for me as the die shrink i assumed would make up most of the speed difference. It would be easier to cool, last longer and pay the power bill. I currently have it paired with a GTX 1060 6GB card, for the kids gaming system. I have never seen it over 75% before the 1060 hits it's limit and the i7-5775c never goes above 56 degrees celsius maxed out with an 212 EVO cooler. I never regret not buying the 4970k.

Back in 2017 i had the option to go with this one rather than 4790k but due to reviews at the time and relatively low clockspeed i decided to pick 4790k over 5775c. Its kind of interesting that broadwel on lga 1150 was so neglected by media, testing methodologies were terrible back then, it was ahead of its time. @@MendAmar The L4 cache was still MUCH slower than what AMD are doing now with the stacked cache. It's honestly not that much faster than accessing fast DDR4, either in latency or bandwidth terms. Playing games with a DDR3-System these days seems to depend strongly on the ram speed. I have a Xeon E3-V4 1285L, quite similar to the i7 5775c but with locked multiplier of course (but it clocks 3,4 / 3,8 GHz). I have 32GB of Kingston HyperX DDR3-1866 installed and was wondering about quite frequent stutters in modern games. Overclocking the ram to 2400 with some softer timings (11-12-12-35) did the trick. I still have to verify with some more games, but the Far Cry 6 Benchmark dipped to the 40s before and now won't go below 60. EDIT: I may have to correct myself - Background processes were the cause for the stutters, the ram speed doesn't really matter as fas as I can see.

you can fix the 30 FPS lock by either running the game on windowed borderless or alt tabbing or by turning vsync off and on again. I think it's an issue with RAGE's vsync, even at on or off it'll either lock it at 30fps or the pause menu becomes unusable. I've encountered this issue on different systems too, though it is less likely to happen on higher end hardware.

Hi, that's do many years now i have both : 5675c and the 5775c, i used the i5 for media center, but for gaming 2 to 4 players same screen, not going well now, switched to 9700T and it's still really better. The 5775c still in the kids gaming config, paired with a RX6600 XT, so it's very good , low power consumption config ;) The i-gpu of the broadwell is very low consumption, less than 5w if i remember correctly, that's was very impressive at his time. I remember that i made crazy tiny config just for the internet : with one ssd, 16Go DDR3 the i5 and one 22" screen, the total power consumption was under 50w with many firefox tabs, the powersupply was the V450S Gold, yep >80% efficiency at 25w (she beat all others 200-300w gold powersupply at that range, that's insane)

I never commented on a video, but I can give you an advice: If you turn off processor c-states and overclock edram the Asus boards will disable whole edram. That is why you probably got lower results with edram overclocking. So turn on c-states and limit them to C6. Also I will suggest to overclock cache/uncore to 3700Mhz atleast, because it is very underclocked @ stock.

While that screenshot of Bruno getting to 4.3, from what I recall no one on the forums could push through 4.2. Heck, some people even changed the cooling, dropped the temperatures by a lot and gained 0MHz. It was just amazingly bad overclocker. Never seen one though, they've never been sold here, new or used. Personally though, I'd much rather see what locked 4770 and 4790 can do today. They seem as legit budget options still. Maybe.

@@IcebergTech It really is amazing how an 11 year old CPU architecture can still hang with the relatively recent models when more data is right there next to the core! It's a shame that the 1680 v2 doesn't feature AVX2 support. The current MSFT/Sony consoles both wield Zen 2 CPUs, so it wouldn't surprise me if more and more games start requiring AVX2 this year. Or, perhaps if more and more game developers start "forgetting" the AVX2 flag whilst compiling PC ports.

I get it for 300€ at the end of 2021. As the HEDT-Version of the Broadwell-Era its quite a beast of a Chip runing at 4.3GHz. Capable to max out the 4080 in Battlefield 2042 in WQHD at nearly 144FPS. I thougt it would be a interim-solution for the old GTX1070SLi until i get a new platform like Ryzen 7000 or something. but... it works quite well, realy. Maybe this combo lasts for longer than expected. And please excuse the bad english im typling, its not my daily language.

Why does Broadwell overclock so poorly, in comparison to Haswell? I've overclocked a 5775c, 6800k, and 6950x and the highest I got was 4.4ghz, -2 AVX with the 6800k. On the other hand I've kissed 5.0ghz stable with a 4790k (hit 4.7ghz stable with another 4790k), an E5-1650 v3 to 4.8ghz stable with safe voltages, 4.7ghz with an i5-4690k, and the worst was 4.5ghz stable with a 4770k. The 5775c I had could hit 4.3ghz, but I was using XTU to overclock it, instead of using the BIOS. I was able to pass stress tests and Cinebench with it. I did this with a Gigabyte Z97 Gaming 7 motherboard.

I could be wrong here, but I think something is broken in your iGPU comparison test between Iris Pro HD6200 VS UHD 730. It is my belief HD6200 is about twice as powerful as UHD 730 & UHD 750. Way more shaders for example (384 VS 256). I'm guessing if you did a test with an older DX8 game like Unreal Tournament 2004 (greatest game of all time), Iris Pro HD6200 would come out way on top. Love to be proven wrong though. Good job talking about my fav and daily driver processor; thanks!

I haven't done a direct comparison between the two per se. The xeons are most often still the most attractive cpu´s of that "dark age" era of no progress.
