that concept art is so sick. galidor was rly cool for what it was, obviously i wouldn't want it to replace regular lego, but the theme had a cool world and aesthetic. i think bionicle did a better job of letting you build any kind of creature you want, rather than a system of specific character molds. but i still don't think that idea has been fully realized

Amazing to see the history explained by you, DuckBricks, with great overview so many years after sitting in the middle of action without the full understanding the why, what and who. I remember seeing some of the Galidor pieces and hearing about a TV-series that was being developed just as the big breakthrough of Bionicle was building. I remember being a bit envious that somebody else inside LEGO got to make a long content format but at the same time it sparked the invention of the Bionicle campaign with 2 different types of commercial being designed. honestly i feel like a big issue was due to a quarter of the characters being human, or some sort of rubber forehead. which resulted in most creations looking like horrific genetic experiments, or strogg from quake 2-4. if they just had stuck with the early concepts were everyone was weird aliens, and done away with the hap hazard kek power gimmick it would have fared much better.

My son, now 30, was a super fan of Bionicles. There are several Bionicles proudly displayed at my work my engineers and designers- really a successful line.

The Galidor rachets are still widely used today, and are arguably stronger system than ball and socket, so that development didn't all go to waste.

The concept of buildable figures never realy died out but has merged to be more lego than modular figures. If you think about it, ccbs was the latest attempt at the concept of a seperate system of figure building apart from lego system.

Galidor would have been more successful if there was a focus on one kind of figure that made sense to swap limbs between, doesn't really look cool to a 6 year old to have a random dude in a blue tshirt and cargo pants have a green arm from yoda's pointy cousin. Project genesis by all account would have simply been a better product.

I would argue the theme failed because it wasn’t completely LEGO and it felt kinda cheesy for a TV show.

the decision was kinda dumb, Bionicle around that time was the powerhouse in toy stores, having to spend resource and budget to create another IP to rival Bionicle was a mistake.
