Host Ed Sutkowski talks football, business, life, integrity and what it was like to play for Vince Lombardi with Bob Skoronski, Co-Captain of the Green Bay Packers for Super Bowls I and II.
Bob Skoronski is a grandson of Polish immigrants and the son of parents who worked in a rubber factory. Bob's parents encouraged him and his brothers and sisters to attend college. Though he could have entered Notre Dame, Bob would only go to a school that offered a scholarship to his brother as well. Bob's two younger brothers went to Harvard and his sister earned a Ph.D. At Indiana University, Bob earned a B.A. in marketing, was co-captain of the football team, never missed a college game, and was voted the Hoosier's Most Valuable Player as a senior. He has been inducted in Indiana's athletic Hall of Fame and earned All Big Ten and All American honors. Bob played in the North-South All Star Game in 1955, and the College All-Star Classic in 1956.
Post-Indiana, Bob, then 6'3'' and 250 pounds, was drafted in the 5th round by the Green Bay Packers where he received a $5,000 signing bonus and not more than $7,000 per year during his 13 years at Green Bay. "Ski," as he was called by his teammates, earned All Pro honors and Co-Captained Green Bay's victorious Super Bowl I and II teams.
Bob was a Packer during the reign of the great Vince Lombardi. Bob describes Green Bay's conversion from loser status to winner status, Lombardi's coaching style, and complex, driven and tormented personality; Lombardi became the subject of the David Maraniss book, When Pride Still Mattered, and is memorialized by dozens of his motivational urgings e.g.,
"The quality of a person's life is in direct proportion to their commitment to excellence, regardless of their chosen field of endeavor." Like his coach, Bob led by example on and off the field. Green Bay Packer teammate, Jerry Kramer, wrote in Distant Replay, "Skoronski's formidable energy and enthusiasm carried him, like so many others who played for Lombardi, from an impoverished childhood to remarkable success on the football field to equal success in the business world.
Post-Green Bay Packers, Bob and other teammates founded and grew a sales organization from zero to $16 million in revenues. He is now retired but remains an avid hunter and fisherman, and, along with some of his Super Bowl teammates called the "Green Bay Legends," presents motivational speeches country wide. The Legends donate all proceeds to charity.

I had the pleasure of seeing the great Lombardi teams played many times at Kezar Stadium when I was in high school and college. Bob Skoronski is a great example of the Lombardi legend.

Bob sounds so intelligent, tough and focused, even in this interview. Imagine what he was like when he was playing. Bart Starr says he should be in the Hall of Fame. Many people do. I would not doubt it.

Having been a High School classmate of Bob's - all I can say is a class guy during classic times. The current antics to me are unthinkable being one of the few left who was listening to the New York Giants being defeated by the Brooklyn Dodgers before 55k at the Polo Grounds on December 7th 1941 when "We interrupt this program". They did not announce it at the stadium. If memory serves me correctly --- it was Tuffy Leeman Day and the largess he received was $1,500 !!!!! From Comments Below ..... " I mean, how many times was Bart Starr blind sided?" " Bart Starr says he should be in the Hall of Fame." Need one say anymore? Let me conclude with another overlooked name which for reasons that have genuinely ESCAPED me for decades - namely Marshall Goldberg - a four-time NFL All-Pro. It was a long, long time ago but the greatest open field runner I ever saw!

Yes, I just saw a Browns Eagles game from 1964. The only Eagles I recognized were Norm Snead, Pete Retzlaff, Woodeshick, Timmy Brown, Floyd Peters, Irv Cross and Sam Baker. I recognized all the Browns. On offense, Frank Ryan, Jim Brown, Ernie Green, John Morrow, Gene Hickerson, John Wooten, Dick Schafrath, Monte Clark, Gary Collins and Johnny Brewer On defense, Dick Modzelewski, Jim Kanicki, Bob Gain, Bill Glass, Paul Wiggin, Jim Houston, Vince Costello, Galen Fiss, Jim Shofner, Bernie Parrish, Walter Beach, Bobby Franklin, Ross Fichtner and Larry Benz. Even special teamers like Walter Roberts, Lou Groza, Mike Lucci and Leroy Kelly. Warfield caught two TD passes, Ernie Green ran in a TD, Costello recovered a fumble and Walter Beach intercepted two passes. I also found Norm Snead to be surprisingly mobile as he was under a lot of pressure yet managed to complete a lot of passes. Probably the most underrated quarterback of the 1960s.

An excellent interview. Skoronski reflects the type of individual Lombardi cultivated during his unmatched coaching career. Skoronski clearly wasn't a big fan of blowhards that can't back up the smack. I love how he recalled his encounter with Ben Davidson of the Raiders. A 6-8, free spirited monster, with a handlebar mustache and an oversized ego. After dominating Davidson , he simply replied, "The Mustache was Clipped."_Bob Skoronski is a throwback to a different era. Playing for a coach that set the standard for all others to follow. BUT NEVER EQUAL!!! On any list of the 10 greatest coaches of all time, Vince Lombardi should occupy all ten spots!!! Lombardi set the standard for instilling Values and Discipline into a group of men. Bob Skoronski is a perfect embodiment of everything Lombardi stood for. Toughness, Resilience and Class. Always better than their opponent when it mattered most of all.

what a disgrace how these men were paid for putting their health/life on the line! I will never begrudge a player his huge salary even though it will never make up for the disservice the owners did to the older players that helped popularize the game of football.

And, yet they had a choice what to do with their lives Pay in a free market system is not determined by difficulty or punishment/obstacles, threats to health, merit to society, etc...ITS SUPPLY AND DEMAND, and how the owner wants to adjust to that. The owner provides the employee with the opportunity. The employee is in charge of their survival and their families' survival. Not enough money? DO SOMETHING ELSE FOR A LIVING.. That is life apart from lefty commie brainwashing.

The Bart Starr TD in the Ice Bowl was supposed to be a hand off to Chuck Mercine. Only Starr and Lombardi knew that Starr was going to keep it and QB sneak behind Jerry Kramer.
@TheStuport

seattwa--- You haven't a clue what you are talking about....that is bullshit. Starr called time out and went and told Lombardi HE was going to take the ball in himself and Kramer knew as well.....the whole offense knew when they came out of huddle and up to the line of scrimmage. Stick with the Seahawks Dingus
@robertsprouse9282
@robertsprouse9282 5 жыл бұрын
@@TheStuport, wrong..I saw Starr interviewed, and HE CLEARLY SAID: HIS TEAMMATES WERE SURPRISED WHEN HE KEPT THE BALL. KRAMER LATER INTERVIEWED said the same thing. Only LOMBARDI AND STARR KNEW..and in film study earlier that week KRAMER told LOMBARDI that JETHRO PUGH could be wedged away from the hole..and when they practiced the play after, KRAMER said it was designed for a RUNNINGBACK.. Finally, MERCEIN moved toward STARR without laying back or going forward and blocking. HIS MOMENTUM threw him by STARR to the point where he threw his hands up in the air, not to signal TD, but to avoid the appearance of providing leverage with a push...something that is never called anymore in the pros and is now perfectly legal in college and high school as long as the runner is not picked up and thrown forward by offensive side teammates.. YOU ARE WRONG..now apologize to that responder.. GO AHEAD, try something different, be an adult. YOU DISAGREE with me on this?.. I will debate you all day long. ME=25 YR. SPORTSCASTER.. Go ahead..

Petty? Vince Lombardi's responsibility to his employer was to maximize profits. His employer's responsibility was to do the same for shareholders. Players did/do not like what they are paid, or how negotiations were/ are done, either get another job as they did sometimes in SKORONSKI's day..or hire an agent as virtualky all players eventually did. That is the way the cookie crumble(d)s. Without pro sports owners, there are not any jobs to hold; right, players? GOT THAT, FANS?
