Diego joins MPDA for an inspiring lecture on Interfaces between sustainability, structural design and machine learning in the context of Studio2 building system design.
Diego Apellániz graduated as civil engineer from the Polytechnic University of Madrid in 2014. He has worked since then as structural engineering at Fhecor Ingenieros, Bollinger+Grohmann and the EDD Holding. His portfolio includes projects that range from skyscrapers and artistic sculptures to
rehabilitations of historic buildings, and he has collaborated with renowned architects such as Sir
Norman Foster and Solano Benítez. He is also a self-taught programmer. His Grasshopper plugin for
the structural analysis software RFEM is being used by thousands of users. He also works as research associate at the Berlin University of the Arts, where he is pursuing a PhD about the application of parametric design and machine learning to the life-cycle assessment (LCA) of buildings. As part of his research, he was funded by the Finnish company One Click LCA to integrate their world leading LCA Software in Rhino and Grasshopper and he has also developed the first Grasshopper plugin that uses the machine learning library TensorFlow.
