Interior design for people scared of risks and obsessed with resale value. This is my dad. I was helping him with paint colours and he didn’t like anything. Too bright, too bland, too dark. I asked what his style was, he said “practical”. Every decision is about cost, practically and resale. All good things but when you don’t take design into consideration it doesn’t end up looking good.

Kinda related, maybe a chapter of this video. Interior design for people who can´t decide on just one style. Just speaking from my own love for variety and wanting to have at the same time a: moroccan/english countryside/call me by your name italian stone house-inspired home. How to decide? How to incorporate those different styles? How weird is it to focus on a different theme in each room? Would appreciate your thoughts!

@@holosapiens I remember a TV show of couples moving in together and having to blend very different styles. They got to veto a number of items that were VERY important that they got to keep no questions, and a few "would like to keep" items as well, and they could list a few MUST go items for their partners. A designer would then compare the lists to see what could go, and kept all the important items, and usually was able to create a cohesive home.

I once heard someone say, "Don't be afraid to paint your walls, because they're never going to give you that deposit back anyway." I think that's wonderful advice, but that's just me; If it's going to freak you out the whole time, then it's not worth it, obviously. Sometimes I've been surprised to get the deposit back just from painting a coat of kilz over it before leaving, and other times they've simply deducted about what the primer and a couple drop cloths would've cost me. Don't forget you can also call the landlord and say you'd like to upgrade the hardware/light fixture/whatever and see what they say. Sometimes they'll say okay cool, send me the receipt and you can deduct it from your rent. Just a couple thoughts. You know your situation best of course.

I know it's an old video, but I just discovered Caroline. The best thing to do in this case is paint over with a different shade of white of your choice! I've done that , and it totally changed the ambiance for me. The landlord doesn't even need to know because they wouldn't notice! You can go from a cool white to a warm white or from that industrial beige to a bright white. Makes a difference!

On the paintings being off center: in filmmaking and photography, the rule is that, when you use a grid, your subject belongs in one of the four corners around the innermost square, because that's where the viewer's eye is naturally drawn. Not the center... slightly off kilter. So that's the principle you've got going here :)

The reason why a little bit off center decor pieces work - It works when it follows the principle of golden ratio/ Fibonacci scale, as long as the other elements are working into the same golden ratio pathway, even slightly is usually fine. Absolutely! In case she never does this video (but she should!!!), here are my tips. I live with a (minor) hoarder and my design style is Decorating with S@#t. 1) It is all in how you display it. The trick is to make it look intentional. Lean into it. Look at maximal design inspiration -- bookcases stacked and crammed with books and objects. Gallery walls. Group like objects together and make them look like a little collection. Keep all of this s@#t corraled to a single wall, corner or space. Let the rest of the room be as simple as possible. 2) Cool containers are your friend. Leather suitcases, large baskets with hinged lids, those decorative cardboard photoboxes. Stack 'em high! 3) Must have furniture -- really tall narrow dresser with lots of drawers, rolltop desk, trunks as a coffee table and endtables/nightstands, hope chest (it's a bench seat AND a storage container).

So, sending my condolences, as a fellow why-do-i-have-to-live-like-this girl.

Would love to see 1. "Interior design for the IG addicts" - a video on curation of accent items and decoration: How little is too little, how much is too much? How and when to swap out something for the new trendy thing? and 2. "Interior design cheat codes for broke folks" - How to hide ugly items in plain sight, e.g. wifi router or that kitchen appliance that you use all the time or the pills that you forget to take if you don't see the package (and no phone reminders aren't working for me xD), when you can't afford the super fancy nicely-designed/packaged expensive alternative.

I love that so many commenters here want to see design for indecisive people! I'm one of them! I just can't decide if I want to go vintage or ultra-science-fiction modern. Do I want empty, calm spaces or lots of fluffy, cosy things? Green or blue? Dark and moody or light and happy? I love everything, so I end up with blarghagag anything spaces I don't like. Help.

I don't know if you are a mid-century modern fan, but you might be able to achieve this look with that design style! Add in some colored or warm tiles, furniture, and/or art pieces with your fav cozy textures all while having a muted modern look! Maybe some "modern" pieces with warm-toned finishes as well.
@anczis
@anczis 11 ай бұрын
@@nicholeiverson I'm not that much into this style, but I understand why you would propose it - it's perfectly in the middle of a modern to vintage scale. Thing is, middle is not what I want, but I can't decide the direction either. You gave me a very good hint though. Looking through pinterest boards of midcentury modern I noticed a lot of natural wood panels, especially on walls and ceilings. While that may look dated (growing up in post soviet part of the Europe I've seen a lot of that), it hits some nostalgia vibes and I think I would feel good in such space. Thanks, you helped me a lot :)

I’m the same. I’m phobic about people’s opinions, and when I am confronted with choices, it’s all about what would so-and-so say?. So I return or dump stuff I do buy, and my house is always half-empty and lugubrious. I don’t invite anyone over ever. About 2 months ago though, I had an epiphany when reading a book about interior decoration with NO PICTURES-it was mostly centered on psychology-and so inspiring! Something clicked and I decided to honor my roots-my family is French and I grew up in the USA speaking French. (Still do.) For some deep, dark, unarticulated reason, I always felt the need to reject this heritage. So that’s where I’m headed now: my own version of French traditional/country, which is nothing like it’s portrayed in matchy/matchy furniture sets. It’s finally all making sense now because I have an integrated view of what I am and want. So, maybe part of the solution for indecisiveness lies in the calm acceptance of one’s roots and personality.

Officially giving a stranger’s permission to do a completely different style in every room 💙 also if you need to combine styles, separating the room into architecture vs furniture vs accessories really helps. Lots of people combine traditional architectural features (molding, fireplace mantles, fixtures, flooring can be changed) with more generic modern furniture and then bold choices for art/accessories
