Finally a designer who makes sense. People always forget function before design. Before I purchase anything, I always consider how easy it is to maintain and to CLEAN.

Thank you so much! I always say a great designer takes both the practically and the aesthetic into considerations when designing a space. The average person cleans themselves, and the last thing you want to do is give yourself more work!

I'm so excited to see you on this platform! So glad you pointed out that the foam is toxic. This is especially important to know with households that have smaller children and animals. I'm really not sure how that was ever considered as a trend. 🙄

I worked as a material engineer many years ago. You are so right to emphasize cleaning, and longevity of a product based on what material it is made of. Objects that are hard to clean or deteriorate are not items you want to invest your money in. It is important to think about, materials, size function and aesthetics when picking items for your home. Thank You, Design Daddy for another helpful video.

I was thinking the same thing. Materials that are hard to clean or deteriorate quickly (like plaster, foam or any soft, porous stone) may look good for that first week, but it's all downhill from there.

I love that you talked about cleaning, maintenance, and longevity. I used to watch a lot of home design shows and came to the conclusion that, if Hell exists, thousands of interior designers would be there, forced to live in rooms they created.

I love Zellige tile work!! But like everything, it needs to be used in balance with the other materials and textures used in the space. The same could be said for the architectural style of the home. My personal style feels more time spanning then time period/trend specific though. I enjoy spaces that feel like they’ve always existed and will continue to exist in the future with a nice blend of old & new, timeless & trendy.
@mrphoenixgrey
@mrphoenixgrey Жыл бұрын
Agreed! there are so many factors to consider when choosing finishes for your home, and Zelliga - which can be extremely beautiful when done correctly! with it being so "trendy" right now it looks so out of place to have these hand crafted tiles in super modern kitchens or showers that look so off putting.

They are a beautiful tile, but there are some that just look really messy. the idea of them is to be imperfect and if you like that look then thats what you get. I find that a kitchen is already very busy to begin with. Adding in these tiles increase a lot of visual clutter

The other problem with concaved curved sofas you didn't mention is they're uncomfortable for 'unrelated' people to sit together on because it points legs at each other. Even if there's some space at the bum, the knees maybe touching or uncomfortably close. Or, to keep a more comfortable distance, less people can sit on a large sofa than a similarly sized rectangular sofa. Also, the more acute the curve, the less one is able to lay on the sofa without hanging over the curve.

Curved sofas are pretty, but how do you curl up and take a nap on it? That's almost my favorite thing to do (if i could get paid to nap, i'd be set), and i just don't see how you could do that on one of those. Great job on your first video; i especially appreciate your emphasis on the maintenance involved with these items, because i think that sometimes gets overlooked in the excitement of the new.

Thank You! People do NOT consider maintaining these looks. I once saw a complete bath done in Carrera, it was never properly sealed and completely ruined in less than a year. Just because it looks great in the showroom does not mean you want it in your home. Ever try to keep chocolate colored porcelain clean?? Or shiny stainless steel? Matte black faucets?

Nice video - some good nuggets in there 👍 :) But, I have to say some of the trends here have been and gone already. Also, it really underlines the difference between a professional designer’s world (especially a commercial designer, who has a much larger more experimental canvas to work with) and the average person’s. I love to follow design, and I don’t know anybody in the real world with a disco ball or a giant curved sofa, foam furniture or a DIY travertine side table 🤷🏻‍♀️ Just my own experiences though and in full disclosure, I do have friends who do some pretty weird and wonderful stuff with their DIY so who knows where it will go! :D

Actual curved furniture, boucle fabric, and mirrored balls are classic items but they have a place and a setting, they seem new because they have been overly featured on social media. The rest are not even trends but niche fads that are contributing to waste and the filling of landfills and destroying otherwise useful items.

Welcome to KZfaq :) This is a good first video, even if I had no idea about these trends (I', 40 and I don't do TikTok). I do however like to change the look of my home at least twice a year using decoration (throws, couch covers, deco pillows, small items). I learned that large expensive items (like couches and other furniture) should have a nice neutral shape and a neutral color, because you can change the way they look with decor. For example, I have 3 couch covers in grey, beige and dark red, matching rugs with different patterns and about 20 pillowcases in different covers. In less than a day I can change my living room. Good luck with your future videos :)

I actually agree with the whole list except I am very surprised that zellige is in it. Maybe this looks like a trend in the USA where you do not have a strong tile tradition at all but please consider that this "trend" is a style of handmade ceramic tiles that has been around for centuries in north Africa where they tile everything and they know how it's done. They chip more easily than gres tiles and they cost more but they are not more difficult to clean. I think you don't know this product and you just happen not to like the way it looks.

I am thinking similar pieces come from top furniture stores to walmart for nearly the same-look piece and that is what people don’t like. I absolutely hate people who use books as decor. Worst of all when they take book covers off because they want the solid colour to match the decor or even worse they turn them around so the spines of the books are not seen! Ugh! Books are for reading and if you do have these books because they represent your interests, then let them be seen properly. I love seeing books on shelves that display someone’s interests such as Art, Music, History, Architecture, or photography in large coffee table books, if that’s what you are interested in. On shelves if it shows novels, such as great literature, or science fiction, Manga’s, Biographies, Gardening, gothic novels even childhood books that mean something to you. This is wonderful and gives your home personality and let’s guests know what your interests are. Who you are and also creates dialogue. People should be proud of their books and for goodness sakes read them!

The disco ball is not new. I'm a boomer and this was trending when Donna Sommers was singing in the 70s. That designer took that idea from Studio 54; and so did Beyonce. It would be nice if they were honest about it, instead of marketing it to people who do not know and/or are not old enough to know music and entertainment history. It would also help, for once if they were slightly original. Ms. B. Churchill
