Finally a painter who sprays the top edge of doors and windows. It was so refreshing seeing John do that. It drives me nuts when painters skip those areas and I always caulk them in and paint them. Those top edges are dust collectors and a lot easier for the homeowner to wipe off while cleaning if they have a nice coat of semi gloss paint on them. A raw wood or MDF edge...not so much.

You should definitely put paper behind the door when spraying on or against the wall. That semi gloss will flash through your topcoat after the room has been completed. Anywhere semi gloss overspray hits the wall will most likely flash shine through

Great vid - I like the idea of wiping the excess caulking on the window masking. That is a very efficient way to do it and saves a bunch of time. So glad to see a painter actually use caulking and do it right. So many seem to miss that step because they don't think anyone will notice, but it makes a huge difference. Also, nice cameo (blooper?) from Brooke at 3:07 - oh gosh.

Question. I always mask off around the trim to prevent the oil based paint from flashing or building up on the wall. I never have done what you have done in this video but would definitely like to try it next time to save money and time. Also I only ever spray oil based paint on woodwork since i primarily do remodels. The wall paint is usually a semi-gloss with flat on the ceiling. I always just have a fear of flashing on ceilings. I only use quality paint as well. I love shooting pigmented laquers but in a lot of my cases the designer prefers oil based so I can't get away with shooting both. I shoot the trim then install it with touch behind. Can't touch up laquers with a brush of course. Love your videos they are awesome. You know your stuff. Do you ever run into this similar situation and if so do you mask? Do you think it will flash? It has to be perfect too because the homes i do are higher end and extremely particular about every little detail.

For interior repaints, do you always spray trim first? Also, is it harder to cover the semigloss paint with wall paint if you spray first and don't mask?
@quantom3392
@quantom3392 2 жыл бұрын
If your spraying your trim and doors I find it’s best to do it before painting the walls. The semigloss or satin will make it easier to cut in a straight line to the edge. Another option if your trim paint is cured enough to tape is to tape the trim with 2” blue scotch tape or better is the frog tape and mini roll the wall edge to trim. Yes it may take 3 coats for full coverage depending on paint/colour/thickness etc. you can use clear caulk on the wall edge of the tape to ensure no bleeding but wipe excess off tape and pull the tape while final coat is still soft.

Hey Chris! Thanks so much for all your videos and hard work that goes into making them! How do you find good workers who actually care at all about the quality of their work? I've tried three guys and spent more time trying to fix their mistakes than the time they saved me by helping. Like you, I'm extremely detail conscience and do all the details the homeowner will never notice, but make the finished product pop. I started less than a year ago full time and am getting to where I could really use the help, but can't offer benefits so all I can find are guys who can't work elsewhere. Do I need to raise my prices to curb the long waiting list and keep at it alone?

Hi, Chris. Loving the vids! Thank you! I've read that spraying is more difficult than cutting and rolling. People say it can be tough to avoid streaks. They're also saying that, because of the set up, it's not a time saver. I also saw a comment on a forum about backrolling foggy finishes. Would you weigh in on that? Not only that it'll flash in the right light, at least in my experience. Not trying to be a knowitall cuz maybe you have a way of hiding it.

this just seems like a waste of time? you could of brushed and rolled everything and had it done times you finished taping up

Have you seen trim that was sprayed vs. trim that was brushed or rolled? Night and day. The finished product is worth the extra time, material, and work.

Say's the old dog. Mask and spray trim and base in 30 minutes in a room that size. It would take 2 hours to brush and roll that out 2 coats.

I really dig your videos. One area that I think you can improve on is your spraying technique. When spraying doors it is best to maintain equal distance from the substrate. Breaking your wrist will cause a paint to build up in the center of the door while potentially skimping on the top and bottom. Also, what is the benefit of having the pressure turned all the way up? I would suggest doing that on ceilings or raw drywall but, not inside an occupied home. Perhaps you know something I don't. Lastly, RAC X Tip is called Rac10

Spraying trim this way is a complete waste of material. Plastic, tape and paint. Alot of over spray. YES the semigloss will flash on the walls.

Nathan Russell spraying the trim with Aqua Gloss etc.. Is easily covered when applying wall paint .. Unlike if painting with oil based gloss... Sorry but this way is far better than a brush...

413 rac turn your pressure down to about 3/4 and cross off your door it only takes one pass each way and you’re done. getting your speed correct takes a little to get use to but thats it. I also find it easier to turn your tip so the fan is up and down rather than side to side but thats just me. good job.

I always check for adhesion,because paint definitely doesn’t stick to all surfaces.Ive found that emerald from Sherwin-Williams sticks very well to glossy surfaces without sanding or deglossing,but probably best to do anyways.

Your videos are great! I currently live in a home that I am redoing the trim work in. Do you have a video that shows how to spray trim in a house that is occupied? I’m afraid I’ll get paint on everything. How do you do your jobs without getting paint everywhere and having to repaint wall?

Love your videos. When i spray doors i use the graco true coat cordless gun and it spray very nice but the sprayer you use looks like it sprays very fine. Not thick at all. With the true cost it takes a while to dry. Does your spray dry fast? And what would you recommend me moving up to for spraying? Thanks.

I see something that you can improve on in your spraying when I spray the inside of a cabinet, I think of it as a flat panel that has not been folded into a box yet and spray in the direction of top and then work my way down- left side, back, right side, and then vise-versa all the way down. I think you will find you have less of a cloudy finish this way.
