International Court orders Israel to halt offensive in Rafah | BBC News

The United Nations' top court has ruled that Israel must "immediately halt its military offensive" in Rafah in southern Gaza.
The International Court of Justice, which decides disputes between countries, says "the catastrophic situation" in Gaza had deteriorated and described humanitarian conditions in Rafah as "disastrous."
The judges also said the Rafah border crossing with Egypt must be opened for the entry of humanitarian aid "at scale”.
South Africa had asked the ICJ to make the order as an emergency measure, saying Israel’s actions in Rafah amount to a “genocidal” operation and threatened the survival of the Palestinian people.
The Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has again rejected allegations of genocide, calling them false and outrageous. Some of his cabinet partners accused the court of antisemitism and siding with Hamas.
However for Mr Netanyahu’s critics the ruling is one more sign of Israel’s growing international isolation.

What’s confusing about this whole situation is that it’s possible to both condemn the Hamas attacks _and_ think Israel has been more than heavy-handed in its response to October 7th. It’s possible to support Palestinian freedom from Israeli state oppression without being antisemitic just as it’s possible to support Israel against Islamist aggression without being anti-Muslim. These 2 things are not necessarily mutually exclusive. Too many folk are either one thing or t’other in this conflict when it’s possible to be both/and.

Israel hasn't been heavy handed it has done what it needs to do to deal with Hamas - who prevent civilians from fleeing, build bases under civilian infrastructure like Hospitals and refuse to fight the IDF openly preferring to attack civilians like total cowards. The reported 35,000 dead in Gaza turned out to be total bullshit. Not one single man recorded among the dead. Not one single Hamas Fighter reported dead among 35,000. The UN admitted their numbers come from Hamas and are total bullshit. So no Israel hasn't been heavy handed and we can all just butt our noses out of a sovereign nations business.

This is not a reaction to October the 7th, oct 7th was the final straw whereby israel decided enough and that hammas had to go.. As Douglas Murray said ' you dont put out 80% of a fire' As to casualties its low considering and the only figures are supplied by hammas so are likely to be far lower.. hammas also uses civilians as human shields, this is unlike any other war and is being fought in the middle east but being judged by western eyes which is why there is the imbalance in consensus

If they are going to throw accusations at Israel they they need to back them up in a court of law. So far we have the absurd claim of genocide followed by the even more absurd claim that Israel is deliberately starving Gazan civilians. Both accusations can be demolished in about five minutes in a court of law. So your "more than heavy handed" has ZERO legitimacy in terms of International law and the Laws of Armed Conflict.

It is weirder that Palestinian hostages taken by Israel over the years were never talked about. In the 7 day truce, Israeli hostages returned with no physical harm. Does the BBC know that the chief judge of icj is a former diplomat of Lebanon and a former ambassador of Lebanon to UN who was regularly voting and criticizing israel and has been nominated to icj by govt of Lebanon of which hezbollah is a part of which is an ally of hamas in war against Israel. In any other Court proceedings such a judge would have recused himself, not this judge. If he had not ruled against Israel he will not be able to go back home to Lebanon and be alive. @@sebia322 That is a different court, and those arrest warrants haven't been issued. The prosecutor of said court is seeking arrest warrants, but the judges have yet to rule. That is the International Criminal Court. This is the International Court of Justice, which never issues arrest warrants.
