In this first episode we review the history behind the first International space station - the international Skylab. Combining a US Skylab station with Soviet Salyut 4, the International Skylab was an actual proposal - so what would have happened if history had gone differently?

Fantastic visualization of such a missed opportunity: an International Space Station, at a tenth of the cost and twenty years earlier - and a destination for the Shuttle from the very beginning of that program.

I have an idea: A European German station "Columbus-Adler" will dock, representing the EU, and the East Asian module of China, Korea, Japan, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Philippines will dock, as the "Orient Segment". An international multidocking port module may be placed on top, so that more spacecraft will dock, and a robotic arm may also be installed. At the bottom there can be a fixed weather instruments' module to forecast Earth weather. A fuel tank can be placed below, too.

Your work is exceptional, some of the very best I've ever seen in terms of production value and skill to say nothing of the storytelling involved. When/if you finish this series you might look into the US airforce's X-20/blue Gemini/Manned Orbital Laboratory programs. They would make an excellent alternate history series.

I think the Skylab A's orbital inclination is approximately 50 degrees, while the soviets preferred the 51.4 degree inclination. I wonder how much delta-v would it have taken to shift the orbital inclination by 1.4 degrees.....
@AluminumOxide
@AluminumOxide 5 жыл бұрын
Around 450 m/s
@Makoto778
@Makoto778 5 жыл бұрын
@@AluminumOxide Thank you. I was thinking it would be roughly there. So 450 m/s would definitely require a tug of some sort if we wanted to move Skylab. Also to note, Soyuz has a delta-v of 390 m/s and Space Shuttle (full payload) has a delta-v of 300m/s. So neither spacecraft can visit both Skylab and Salyut. Apollo CSM should be able to easily do the inclination change as it has a significantly larger delta-v even if only half fuelled.

Am I correct that the US Skylab was the FIRST to have a multiple docking adapter, if only one extra port for emergencies, BEFORE the development of the Russian Mir station block (which did have four extra ports on its docking node)?

@leonardholmin8431
@leonardholmin8431 9 ай бұрын
Thanks. Yes, understood. But the real world Skylab seems to have been the first ever to introduce an airlock with more than one docking port, so that a second Apollo CSM could dock when the crews rotated. The later Russian Mir famously introduced FOUR extra docking ports to form the now familiar "node". Their earlier Salyut had only one on the nose, and maybe one on the tail. It also seems that nobody, not even the US, had docking and transfer before Apollo CSM/LM. Gemini could dock nose to nose but not transfer crew. The animation and concept here are great. Certainly the actual International Space Station itself would have been unthinkable during the Cold War. If only countries could get along so well down HERE! LH

Little tidbits of (in)accuracy. Due to the Soyuz 11 accident, the rest of the plain numbered Soyuz (38 being the last in 1980 for Salyut 6) carried only two cosmonauts because they could not fit 3 wearing pressure suits. Only once Soyuz T was flying could they have 3 cosmonauts again. Our Joint Expedition 1 would only have 5 members. Also, I don't think they would have let a cosmonaut stay on Salyut (especially pre-two ports) to dock it to Skylab. Thankfully for us, Salyut could maneuver on its own. I'm sure they could have rigged a TV camera up somewhere to accomplish it.

suggestion: what if in the 70s after apollo was supposed to end the soviets and americans did a joint moon landing called the saturn N1 test project this assumes even though america still landed on the moon first in 1969 the soviets managed to land a man too. This could evolve to where america and the soviets build and international moon base or space station.

@Jimfoxyboy
@Jimfoxyboy 5 жыл бұрын
RCS would translate the craft sideways, but in doing so, yes, the offset mass would cause some rotational movement. The RCS system would additionally be able to cancel out said rotation as well. They would be going very slowly anyways, so its easier to compensate.
@jordanhazen7761

Docking that combined CSM+adapter stack sideways to the Skylab at 17:30 seems like the trickier problem. Would the standard RCS quads have had enough control authority?
@Jimfoxyboy
@Jimfoxyboy 5 жыл бұрын
Later missions going out to the moon, the LEM docked on the nose of the CSM weighed as much as 36200lbs (16400kg). The RCS was able to rotate the two craft around so the CSM main engine could fire in the right positions.
