In this Episode, Shuttles arrive to IS. First the US Space Shuttle arrives and on its second mission delivers an additional module - the Spacelab design by the European Space Agency. Then, a few years later, the Buran launches and docks to the station. Finally, an ambitious plan to have both shuttles docked to IS is conducted and makes for quite a show.

I'm hoping for some Shuttle External Tank Module action in the next round of building. It would allow for a massive increase in available cubage onboard for either consumable storage or habitation.

With all that Soviet hardware already on there and no more Saturn V to loft big 260-inch S-IVB modules, the US needs to put something big up there. Why not a fat, 330-inch ET wetlab?!!

Seeing two space planes on the one station, kind of reminds me of those pictures artists used to draw back in the not so distance past. The ones where they thought that going to space, we'd all be using space planes and shuttles, rather than rockets. Also nice to see the Canadarm getting some attention. Although, side note: while I know this is a representation of what could happen; and perhaps some limitations you had. In the past, the Spaceshuttle has made use of special cradles, like with the Hubble repair missions. I could possibly see them position a module onto the cradle with the Canadarm. And then moving in to dock with the station. Rather than having all that mass held out so far from the spacecraft. Other than that, very thoughtful series. Who's to say this 'space story' hasn't already happened in another version of our world. :)

(25:30) I wouldn't park Buran in the same direction as the American shuttle (forgot to mention...LOL) Mere feet between wingtip to wingtip. Park it 180 degrees. I'm amazed at the rare footage you put in that I can't find. Buran's assembly and the extended Columbia's 1st launch. Keep up the great work you send. X33 or X37 in future episodes?

Yeah, those wingtips looked awfully close...also, the weight distribution might be more even if the Buran were docked 180 degrees from Shuttle - in case IS would need to do attitude adjustments, etc.

As always, FANTASTIC creativity - and historic believability (as far as hardware and the timeline - geopolitically not so much, as we all know - sadly :-( ). I LOVED the POV EVA - showed the scale of IS and its attending vehicles - plus when the characteristic shadow of a Kerbal came into view, it gave me a chuckle! I can't wait to see what you do next!

Cool! Suggestions/Predictions: IS will de-orbit and hit the Midwest. The main Skylab, however, will be saved by Columbia and modified into a Spacelab attached to the cargo bay of a future shuttle. The Salyut modules will be incorporated into the Mir, and the Tiangong and EU Spacelab modules will leave the station. All other parts will be space junk and will be docked to each other and de-orbited. Next project: Station "Freedom"

Are the deployed solar panels pointing in ever direction making anyone else twitch? They're obstructing each other and just huge docking hazards.... it seems like they'd retract a few of them or would have developed a better power generation system for the station.

Here's a good one: What if Buran had entered regular service? Contrary to popular belief, Buran was not just a shuttle knock off. It was, in many ways, the more capable vehicle. The Energia, the carrier rocket for Buran, was able to lift cargo other than Buran. With a cargo capacity of 100 tons to LEO, this would have allowed for truly massive stations, the likes of which have never been seen before. Think Mir with nearly Skylab sized modules. Buran itself had slightly better cargo capacity. Buran also had slightly higher cargo capacity, as it didn't have to lug around any unnecessary engines, unlike the Shuttle, and this despite the fact it came with jet engines for powered landings. It could also operate completely unmanned, which she Shuttle was never capable of. And since the Soviets really liked iterating on their designs, who knows, maybe an upgraded Energia could have taken some Soviets to the Moon?

Yep! No orbital Buran ever had or was planned to have jet engines. You'd be surprised at how many people make this mistake, or use it to proclaim that Buran was "clearly superior" to the Shuttle, while in reality it wasn't (liquid-fuel booster were also planned for the Shuttle).

If only every empty main fuel tank had been carried into orbit..... how much useable real estate there would have been.... Wikipedia said there were 135 launches. Sadly, we all know that one launch didn’t make it (May the crew rest in peace), but if 134 of those fuel tanks were in orbit, waiting to be repurposed..... 2 or 3 space stations (maybe in a rotating frame so the several linked together could provide gravity to the crew and scientists aboard - making years long missions possible with no deleterious effects .... parked in lunar orbit to use as a lunar gateway hub.....refuelling parks for future deep space missions.... several of them parked in martian orbit as supplies “warehouses” for mars missions..... as the hubs for solar power stations..... etc etc.... what a waste to let them just burn up as they fell back to Earth.
@HalNordmann

Fun fact: NASA offered the empty fuel tanks in orbit for free to be used by anybody who wanted them. Nobody took that proposal, and NASA itself didn't have the money to do anything with them themselves. #FundNASA

Was the International Skylab "inspection" created through Kerbal Space Program software (the astronauts shadow looked familiar)? I know Skylab was re-purposed Apollo components but why did they create brand new modules for the ISS instead of using updated Skylab designs? There's probably other reasons but I believe it was because it was cheaper overall to create and build new, more robust designs versus updating a temporary Skylab design to last longer? ;-)

The only vehicle that could launch Skylab was the Saturn V, since it was essentially the 3rd stage reconfigured as a station which meant it was enormously wide by today's standards, NASA didn't have the funds to launch more Saturn Vs so station modules from then on were designed to fit inside the shuttle cargo bay.

@stuartyoung4182
@stuartyoung4182 5 жыл бұрын
Buran DID have two engines (in the same locations as depicted in the video) for final orbit insertion and de-orbit - basically the same function (and about the same size) as the OMS engines on the Shuttle. However, since (as you obviously know) Buran didn't have to propel itself until it reached space, it could mount its OMS engines in-line instead of in "shoulder pods" as on the Shuttle. The Buran OMS engine bells are FAR too large in this Buran KSP mod for some reason.
