If it’s too quiet , crank your monitors . Don’t start pushing faders or master fader to get more volume because you can’t hear it. Gain stage , bring all faders to 0, start leveling important elements to least important . Work your elements around the driving force of your song.

He didn't say the most important thing: you need to gain stage after every effect you add on the chain. 90% of the times when you think that EQ or compressor made wonders, actually only raised the volume and that's bad because you re going against gain staging.

@@hamidibrahim4336 because by doing so your dry signal is only actually dry for the first effect in the chain. Say you have 5 effects, your 5th and last one is likely not to have headroom to work properly if your first 4 effects raised the volume of a couple DB each. Also, actual DBs and perceived volume are definitely not the same thing, so make sure you use the "output" knob on every effect you use to keep the same in/out DBs.

IN A NUTSHELL: Make sure all your instruments from the start are somewhere close to -18 DB in volume from the instrument panel's volume knob itself. You shouldn't have to see the faders on your mixer turned down a lot. Most plugins work best when the input of the signal if around -18 to -10 DB anyway.

truth be told he more-less just did his own personal mix. gainstaging usually consist of you keeping ur output fader down together and raising them individually ...none the less this was good to however if you do other genres i suggest watching other tutorials as well.

To break it down, route everything to your mixer and adjust the gain knob so they are all hitting around the same db. Around -9 to -12 db. Then mix by utilizing your faders in the mixer. The further down the fader goes, the more db it will decrease by...so its more precise to have your faders zero'd out to work from there. Another important reason is some VST's don't like/react/work well with hot signals.

C'Trill Beatz negative, gain stage first, then level the beat, then do your mixing(in mono) when you do things like EQ and saturation from plugins it can raise or lower the volume of the sound, just adjust your output gain of the vst to make it match the original db

Hi, thanks for the tips, anyway is it possible to have a video where you talk about setting the limiter right in order to get the desired loudness? There's a new standard for measuring it, I don't remember the name now, it must be something like lufs. I've heard that the final level must be kept at - 1db from the ceiling to avoid clipping when converting to mp3, or another sampling frequency (like from 44.1khz to 48khz). Also, seems that KZfaq, Spotify and all the digital distributors have their lufs value to be used.. Thank you

Step 1: place soft clip on master Step 2: Level beat in step sequencer, adjust levels how you want Step 3: route to mixer Step 4: gain stage thru your fx chains, meaning make sure the output volume of each plugin matches the input volume of your "pre fader" sound Step 5: adjust level on fader POST plugins Step 6: add vocals, use mix busses, master etc..

One thing I see he didn't mention was panning. Panning is important just as well as gain staging. Panning gives instruments space you don't want ALL your instruments straight up the middle.

@@contra-bassrecords874 Gain refers to volume, and panning is the control of volume between the left and right. It's absolutely a part of gain-staging. If you look at the mixer in this video, the sounds he's using are actually panned to begin with.
@contra-bassrecords874
@contra-bassrecords874 5 жыл бұрын
@@bl6628 gain and volume aren't the same if you wanna get into semantics. Gain staging is important for allowing headroom and creating the correct dynamics before dynamic processing. Panning doesn't affect either of these therefore it seems irrelevant. Feel free to change my mind.
