The interpersonal circumplex and how to apply circumplex research in teams. This video presents several lessons for team members, including one about team culture.
James Maxwell's theory of the electromagnetic field influenced the psychologist Harry Stack Sullivan, who suggested that psychologists pay attention to the interpersonal field created by multiple people in a joint situation. Sullivan influenced Timothy Leary while Leary was conducting his doctoral research at UC Berkeley, which involved observing group dynamics in a therapy group. Leary created the first interpersonal circumplex diagram along with other field diagrams to describe these dynamics. Later, psychologists revised Leary's circumplex, creating the current form, which retains some similarities. The vertical axis is agency or assertiveness and the horizontal axis is communion or compassion.
Research on the interpersonal circumplex can be useful for people who work in teams. This video presents several lessons for team members, including one new idea about team culture itself being classifiable on a circumplex. This section refers to the Circumplex Culture Scan and Circumplex Team Scan, created by Culture Capital Group and researched by Kenneth Locke.
This video was created for college students in project teams but it can be used at any level.
We appreciate the advice we received from psychologists Kenneth Locke at the University of Idaho, and Michael Roche at Penn State University. Chris C. Martin created the video with help from Wendy Newstetter and Joseph M. LeDoux at the Coulter Institute for Biomedical Engineering at Georgia Tech and Emory University.
