From various interviews I watched and heard. I can say that Carlos and Paul struggled to get along well in studio. Also, touring and Interpol as a whole didn't fullfilled Carlos' life. Daniel, Sam, Paul and Carlos they all went to group therapy because of their problems inside the band. By the time the Interpol (2010) record came out Carlos just felt he couldn't handle it more and said to the rest "this is it guys" and left the current therapy session leaving nothing, but his bass and synth parts to be used in the record, which he claimed it was going to be the "Kid A" of Interpol's Discography. Paul decided later to rewrite the record and ignore almost the entirety of Carlos' recordings. Man that's a sad story...

I remember I saw an interview not too long ago with Paul and he said Carlos is a musical genius and would basically be a big influence on all the songs as far as the structure and chord progressions. He also said he was a big asshole but they sacrificed dealing with that for a while just because he was such a great musician but obviously that took its toll and now he's gone.

Paul forgot to check his panty wardrobe at JFK Airport. Typical ex pat. Fucking broke to the US, makes it big in NYC with Interpol, & forgot to take his thumb out of his ass. I lived in the East Village & met Carlos many times while doing his DJ gigs. Like every talented artist, arrogant, but not an asshole. Success was pretty fast for Interpol, touring take it's toll, alcohol, good drugs, hot lady's, & you got no more bright lights, in the city that never sleeps.. Cheers..

Can someone explain to me why Carlos left? Apparently he grew sick of playing bass? It makes no sense to me. He was so at one with that instrument. His playing was always so appropriate. Never too much, never too little. That's a real musician, right there.
@recyclat
@recyclat 9 жыл бұрын
dradfromthebu Paul always remarks in interviews, that during elpintor sessions he had no clue, how his part (vocals and guitar) might look like ... until the moment he brought a bass and worked out some basslines. How come, that Daniel didn´t work them out for elpintor as well? Carlos´s contribution on the former albums must have been much more relevant than just styling the already worked out parts a little bit. (imho)
@AK-cm8qe
@AK-cm8qe 9 жыл бұрын
dradfromthebu Daniel may have written a few, but Carlos wrote the vast majority of Interpol's basslines. Saying he only 'stylized' them is entirely untrue and hugely downplays his contributions to the band.....not sure where that myth comes from. And Carlos joined the band as the bass player, it's not like he was the last friend to show up for practice and got stuck on it. I get the vibe that initially playing bass was fine, but if you look at the 3rd and 4th records he was more interested in orchestration and seemed bored with bass. Not to be a dick, but saying Carlos was basically a session play with flair is wrong.
@dradfromthebu
@dradfromthebu 9 жыл бұрын
Alex Kemp I'll admit that while I can't remember or find the source that was claiming Daniel wrote most of the basslines, I believed it and have that view also based off of Paul's interview (I'm pretty sure it was a recent El Pintor one) where he talks about the original writing process of the band. He says Daniel basically has the song structures and chord progressions sorted out, and presents them to the band while they all together work out the instrumentation and Paul writes lyrics and works out the vocal melodies. What I mean by Daniel writing most of the basslines is... if what Paul's saying is true, the basslines had to have already had a rough sketch if the songs truly had a layout before bringing them to the band. Think of a lot of the songs off the first two records where the guitars are very sparse or droning. Something like Evil. I doubt Daniel brought the songs to the band simply as single note, repetitive guitar parts. The bass keeps the "progression" in most of the songs. I believe he had rough sketches of the basslines in order to write the guitar parts, and Carlos 'wrote' and stylized them to fit the songs. Again... just my take based off of what the band says about Daniel's importance to the songwriting process. I just think it's a little odd also that people constantly cite Carlos as the most talented member of the band, and that things will never be the same since he's gone. Daniel has always been the driving force behind this band. It's his band, he brought everyone together, and he had the knowledge of the music business to make them a success. Carlos really fucked them over by quitting, and I would understand and respect his personal decision to leave if it wasn't for the assholish behavior he exhibited quite often during interviews. I'm thinking about one I saw where he spent most of the interview trying to be the center of attention after banging his knee on a table...
@AK-cm8qe
@AK-cm8qe 9 жыл бұрын
I know what interviews you're talking about and Daniel bringing a rudimentary chord progression or riff to Paul, Carlos, and Sam shouldn't translate to Daniel writing all Interpol songs and the rest of the guys just playing or slightly building off what he presented. Of course, a given set of chords has a matching key or maybe an implied rhythm that Carlos may have to account for, but that doesn't mean he had any less of a part in writing his bass parts or the songs more generally. Plus, Paul has said in numerous interviews that Carlos' basslines were often the foundation of his vocal melodies and guitar parts. Even if some of Daniel's initial sketches had rough basslines, given what Carlos decided to do with them, it's misleading to say Daniel wrote them and Carlos merely spruced them up. Conveniently you cite Evil, which was one of the few basslines Daniel is credited with. I'm not sure why that would make you think that all songs underwent the same process, though. And Carlos didn't fuck them over at all, if anything he did all involved a favour. If you don't want to be somewhere, leave. They're all adults who lead their own lives, and Carlos chose to leave to pursue other things. Better than staying and half assing it. Do we have too much time on our hands to be arguing about this? Probably.

Hey man, you are pretty versed on Interpol. I have to believe what you are saying, because your reply is well balanced. I missed almost the whole 90s when it comes to music, and I think I know a thing or two, about a thing or two. I lucked up on Interpol while channel surfing on KZfaq. I was impressed by their ability to play live and sound good doing it. I turned 58 last year and I'm still playing catch up on a myriad of bands who are close to as brilliant as Interpol. I'm aware that they signed a contract in 2002 with the independent label "Matador Records", but they've been honing their skills since the late 90s, so I can mark them off of my list of awesome 90s bands pursuit. An African American who knows real talent when see's it. peace
