This is a really great video to help you understand a particularly complex area of physiotherapy - reflex tests! It talks you through hyperreflexia, hyporeflexia, upper motor neuron lesions, bilateral hyperreflexia... and more!

my gosh, as I prepare for my provincial exams, I'm crying with gratitude for your explanations. our college was closed due to covid and thus our program suffered a lot of set backs before my classmates and I could get back on track with our learning. you are a gifted teacher!

Great informative video! Lets say you find a hypo or hyper-reflexive response, would this be classed as a red flag since a lesion at the spinal cord is likely the cause?

Hi! It depends on severity and patient progression… If something like a mild hyporeflexive unilateral issue would certainly at the VERY LEAST keep an eye on it, but if concerns about patients symptoms worsening then refer for MRI. Whereas if I was genuinely concerned about hyperreflexive response and worried about a central neural issue e.g. Potential stroke, then urgent referral

Very informative video. Couple of questions… 1) What might unilateral hyperreflexia indicate? 2) If someone was to have an upper motor lesion of the upper cervical spine but a left sided lumbar radiculopathy, would that left leg still be hyporeflexic or hyperreflexic?

Great questions! 1) still likely to indicate a CNS problem e.g. contralateral stroke or one sided cord compression for example 2) Great question! I could see it presenting as either - may depend on severity of each of the two problems. Whichever one more severe may be more present

Is this a sympathetic or parasympathetic response or is that vernacular not appropriate for this response?

I would think of this more simply as just spinal reflexes
