When I was 16, i received tongues without ever even reading about or hearing it, when I was pleasing with God to help me know how to pray for a specific situation. That night changed my life. About 6 months later, I felt I needed to stand up in my (very conservative) youth group (where they'd never even so much as talked about tongues!!). I was scared and shaking and telling God "no." Then my pastor got up and said, to my SHOCK (if u knew this church you'd be shocked too!) "If anyone has something they feel God laid on their heart to share, a verse, a tongue, an exhortation, etc, please come up now to share it." So that gave me confirmation this was really God! I stood and spoke in a tongue and kids who normally seemed stone cold towards God began to cry and hot their knees. I went and sat and we waited for the interpretation. My close friend and prayer partner who I'd already seen interpret a few times before when it was just the two of us, whispered to me that she heard it but wanted to wait to confirm she was really interpretting. Someone gave an interpretation and you could sense it wasn't right. My pastor asked if anyone else had an interpretation. Someone shared. It was a declaration of praise, speaking of how God was and is and will be forever and some other things like that. My pastor said his spirit bore witness to that interpretation and my friend leaned to me and said, thats word for word what I heard. There were some kids who gave their lives to Jesus or gave their lives more fully to him that night. Could you say that was "general?" Sure, but it was something meant for a full room of people, so a specific instruction or something wouldn't make sense. It was intended to encourage faith in a whole room of young believers who had never seen God move in that way before. And it did just that! And I think even more than the specific tongues and interpretation, it was his overwhelming presence in the room and his love, coupled with that very small display of his power at work in his body

A year ago the Holy Spirit led me towards your preaching, I had seen you on shorts and started hearing the Spirit of truth when you spoke and at around the same time I had heard David Diga Hernandez and I thought man these people are so alike in what they are saying. The Spirit in them is real and I felt that you both read the Word. When you know your people you know. May the Lord protect your homes and families. Thank you for your faithfulness. People out here need this. We need the Spirit of truth. We need Jesus Christ. We are desperately searching all types of ways. Many of us are lost. And this world is cold. Another aspect of the modern tongues phenomenon is, of course, the concept of ‘interpretation’. “Interpretation of tongues”, which goes hand-in-hand with ‘speaking in tongues’, may also be said to be a self-created phenomenon. Interpretation is a ‘spiritual improv’ of sorts, inspired by one’s deep faith and beliefs. What do I mean by this? Well…. Interpretations are typically characterized by being inordinately longer than the actual glossic utterance, rather generic and non-specific in nature, and perhaps not surprisingly, open to multiple non-related ‘interpretations’. In other words, have ten interpreters listen to a glossic string and you’ll get ten different (typically unrelated) “interpretations”. In ‘tongues’, ‘The big brown dog is slow’, can also be ‘The small white cat is quick’. These latter two characteristics (‘generic-ness’ and multiple interpretations) do not suggest anything that is divinely inspired. It fails even the most basic tests and criteria that define ‘communication’ itself. A common come-back to the multiple interpretation issue is that God/the Holy Spirit gives different interpretations to different people. As one writer put it rather succinctly, “Pentecostal Darwinism does not exist - there’s no mutation or transformation of one message into several for the sake of justifying what is an obvious discrepancy. If this were the case, it would completely eradicate the need for ‘tongues’ in the first place”.

On a different note, why do u think the cadence and length of a message in a supernatural language has to match the one given in English? Who are you to determine how a supernatural language functions? How can we be so quick to conclude it must match our own understanding? Oh how I pray this generation encounters God for who he really is!

@@living_m2414 You may not have ever seen glossolalia being practiced or have heard what it sounds like, but if a pastor is asking if anyone has a “tongue” to share, the concept of tongues certainly wasn’t anything new to anyone there. Again, ‘interpretation’ is very subject - your friend already had an interpretation in mind. Why didn’t the first one given “seem right” - who determined that? When something was given that matched her interpretation - that was her confirmation. Very generic, non-specific praise phrases. Why wouldn’t a specific instruction make sense? A room full of people would be irrelevant if God intended the ‘message’ to be heard by a specific individual there. Do you see what I mean by subjective? Again, I’m not doubting the ‘tongues experience’ - glossolalia is a very powerful tool for those cultures and beliefs that practice it. To your question - interpretations are typically inordinately longer than the actual glossic string. There _are_ languages in the world (one of which is right in my own backyard, so to speak) where one word will translate as several in English (e.g. “hunting from a crouched position” as opposed to “hunting from a standing position” - either way, both would normally just be translated as “hunting”); but, to have one glossic string “translate” into multiple paragraphs borders on the idea of wishful thinking - language does not work like that, supernatural or otherwise. Further, as you clearly demonstrated above, any glossic string is subject to multiple interpretations. In addition, modern tongues-speech is not language - What makes modern tongues not language? The simple answer is relatively straightforward. If a person or being produces a stream of speech, in order for it to be ‘language’, regardless of whether spoken in front of you, in some remote corner of the world, on some alien planet, or on some heavenly/spiritual/supernatural plain of existence, to be 'language', at its most basic level, it must contain at a minimal two features. These two features are *universal,* _regardless_ of where or _by whom_ the speech is being produced. Tongues-speech contains neither one of them. It is simply a facade of language. Neither, by the way, is modern tongues/glossolalia gibberish. Gibberish does not seek to mimic language. Glossolalia does. The ‘nail in the coffin’ so to speak, is that fact that every single phonological rule (rules that govern the sounds of language and how they are put together) that governs a speaker’s native language, will also govern their tongues-speech. There just isn’t anything that remotely suggests some divine ‘language’. I’m very familiar with the study you mention done by the Univ. of PA using SPECT imaging. The results are exactly what one would expect. The reason why the language producing centers of the brain are not overly active in the production of glossolalia (tongues-speech ) is because it is not language; it’s non-cognitive non-language utterance - random free vocalization. As such, these centers in the brain do not need to be overly active - there’s no language being produced. These results have been twisted by certain groups to “evidence” that tongues-speech is the Holy Spirit speaking through the person. Actually, what it evidences is just the opposite - that what’s being produced is not language. Again, to be clear - I’m not at all doubting your experience - but the ‘tongues’ themselves are entirely self-created. Record yourself, or have someone record you, speaking for about a minute r so. Then listen to it. Really listen to it, play it back several times, even slow down the playback speed - but _really_ listen to what it is you’re actually producing. I think you’ll discover that it will match the description of tongues-speech in my original post.

@@kavikv.d.hexenholtz3474 you're right that the idea of tongues was not foreign to my pastor. It's in the scriptures, which he'd read but I hadn't yet before I received tongues. I had been at the church on and off about 2 years and my receiving the gift of tongues happened in my car with Jesus! So while this pastor believed in tongues as laid out in scripture it was still considered taboo to bring up in church and it had never been discussed or demonstrated before. This is a very conservative church where raising your hands in worship is you know, "charismania" or something! Almost dead in religion but the youth pastor at the time was obedient to the Holy Spirit when he got direction that night to invite a message in tongues, little did he know God had already told me to give one but I was scared and thought maybe I was making up that direction until my pastor asked for it. He took heat from the main head pastor etc because this sort of thing did NOT happen there! But again I'm not the only one with a story like this. Several dear friends I met later on college had experiences where they didn't even know about tongues but received it when privately singing songs of worship etc. You can choose to just dismiss that amd I'm sure you will but it's really sad. Wouldn't it be better to just look at it and go, "huh, there are people who prayed in tongues without anyone putting the idea in their head. How does that fit into my theory that this is all some big mind trick?" Like just allow yourself to look at it without dismissing it rather than having a conclusion already that doesn't allow you to see the evidence. Sure, God could give a specific message and interpretation in a group setting like that, but it comes down to what his purpose is in communicating via a tongue like that. I don't have any need to defend God. He uses what he wants how he wants when he wants and that night, he chose to edify the group with a praise given through a supernatural tongue and interpreted. I've also heard a testimony of someone speaking in a tongue in a small group and it came out in fluent French even though the woman did not know French and the hearer was a woman who wasn't a believer but became a believer after visiting that night and hearing something spoken about a God in her own language from someone she knew didnt speak french. So whatever that message was, it may have appeared general if you look at the words themselves but God used it to specifically reach that woman. In terms of "how you could tell the first interpretation was wrong," I don't remember the details of what was spoken. But either it wasn't biblical (God's revealed word which trumps any supposed revelation if it is out of sync), but I don't remember that being the case, or it my spirit (and the pastor's) simply didn't bear witness. It's called discernment which every believer has a measure of, but which can also be a spiritual gift. You wrote a curious line: that paragraphs being translated into a sentence is not how any language, "natural or supernatural." I found thar funny because your whole argument is that there is not a supernatural language or at least, that if there is we haven't seen it (your argument is that glosolalia are not supernatural tongues but you can surmise from this that you're saying humans avent heard a true super naturalanguage and therefore can't know what a supernatural tongue sounds like or how irs structures work). I mean really, how do you KNOW how supernatural languages work if your whole argument is that we haven't experienced any supernatural tongues in action? One could say virgin births aren't a thing also but the very definition of supernatural is that it rises above the way things naturally work. I honestly think sometimes what happens is part of the tongue is being spoken to God and only part of it, God is allowing to be interpreted but I don't know that. I don't pretend to know fully how interpretation works. I have one experience of it and I was on the speaking side of the equation but all I can tell you is God moved powerfully through it with fruit of changed lives. I would never argue that God gave multiple interpretations to multiple people however. If it's truly been interpreted, it has one meaning. Am I saying no one has ever misused or mistaken the use of these gifts? Nope. But let's not throw the baby out with the bathwater. Humans are fallible but God still uses us. He's amazing and he's so much bigger than the box you're putting him in, if in fact you even believe in God. Sadly I know your mind is already made up on this. I'm honestly curious what made you so fascinated with trying to disprove tongues to have a whole channel about it? I pray God will open your eyes and heart.

For me, it is hard to trust tongues & interpretation. I saw so much error in the use of these gifting back in the 1980's. I went to an A of G back then. In fact, there were so many people that seemed to desire to be in the limelight; people 'used their Spiritual gifts' to bring attention to themselves. Rarely did things witness with my spirit.

A lot of times you won’t get interpretations after someone speaks in tongues and that’s fine. This is a language that God understands, so even if we don’t get interpretations of tongues in that moment understand that they’re speaking to God and praising God. Now if the tongues is evil and not from God, that’s still between them and God, God will judge them in the end. Besides that, continue to fix your eyes in Jesus and your relationship with him, don’t put your full focus on whether you understand what anybody in tongues is saying or whether an interpretation will happen or not, God is still God no matter what. There are different kinds of tongues. There is a prayer tongue, where the spirit speaks mysteries to God. This can be praise or it can be intercession and as a part of that there is a warfare tongue where you can tell you are doing spiritua battle. Then there is giving a message in tongues intended for interpretation, and sometimes that is even in an earthly tongue the hearer naturally understands. They are all different. In scripture you see a clear difference between a tonguebfor interpretation and tongues of prayer that build up the speaker as opposed to the hearer. Prayer tongues don't need interpretation. Hope this helps. . @@joshgellock I understand that, but I’m not letting a church who doesn’t have an interpretations ruin it for me, I’m not going to church to focus on, “mannn he spoke in tongues and I didn’t understand it, so now I’m having a bad day and will ignore the word of God that’s being preached today” if THAT bothers you were at times you don’t get interpretations of tongues, then you’re going to lose focus on the word of God being preached , because Now your mind is on that and you lost focus on the word of God being preached. Just because someone speaks in tongues at church, doesn’t mean the whole church is ruined that day because no one in that crowd has the gift of interpretations of someone speaking in tongues, now if there is someone that can, Great, if no one has that gift, I’m not going to say “okay since no one in this church has the gift, then I’m leaving church for good”, you gotta look at context in the scriptures as well, everything Paul was preaching in these letters, he was speaking to THAT church in THAT time that was so focused on tongues and less on the word of God and also we can take what Paul said EVEN to those churchs and apply it to churches that were like the church’s Paul was writing letters to. If having no interpreter present going to bother you and make you lose focus on Gods word that day, then the enemy can EASILY use that and stray you away from the church. Like I said, it would be amazing to have an interpreter, but if it’s not, let them worship the Lord in tongues if they want, as long as the tongues is not demonic, let them freely worship God that way

@living_m2414

I dont know exactly how interpretation is because i dont interpret but, Is it just a feeling of knowing? Like you have something in mind you are praying for? Or is it like you hear a phrase and know what that means? There are a very select few phrases I know what they mean when I pray them but only because they are real words. For example I started saying "raboni" in tongues shortly after being baptized in the Holy Spirit. I had never heard it but one day was reading the Bible and saw someone call Jesus that and then the text says "Raboni, which means teacher." It was so cool! Similar thing happened with "Elohim." I still sometimes hear these once I'm a while when praying in tongues. Idk why only a few phrases are Hebrew as most of it is entirely something different but God knows!

It's simple if you read Scripture. If there isn't someone to interpret, the person who speaks in tongues should speak quietly to themselves and to God - they shouldn't be heard at all. Yes, it is on the person speaking in tongues, not on the person with the gift of interpretation.

If the tongues speaker isn't giving the interpretation, scripture says " then let him keep silence in the church and speak to himself and to God". A separate " interpretation would then be a " word of prophecy ". Both interpretation and prophecy are to edify the believers. It's all there in 1st Corinthians 14.

Yes, it’s a very simple solution. Desire the gift of prophecy. You will not run into this issue. I think many of us have this gift but are too afraid to stand up in church & interrupt the “pastor” to use it. As most “pastors” frown upon anyone other than themselves speaking in church when it comes to any doctrinal teaching. They wouldn’t want the Spirit of God correcting their false teachings.

1 Corinthians 14:13 Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret. Context: In the Church (meeting) The believer who speaks in tongues, also gives the interpretation (prophecy).............This ends the confusion. 1 Corinthians 14:27 If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let "one" interpret. 1 Corinthians 14:28 But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God. The word one in the greek is heis, one and the self-same. The one who speaks in tongues, in the church service, is to interpret, give the message of prophecy. Verse 28 says that if a believer does not have the faith to speak in tongues and also give the interpretation, in the church service, he is to only speak in tongues silently, not outloud. Now the confusion, the worry of if there will be someone bold enough to stand up and give the interpretation, the multiple times, the microphone doesn't get to the intrepretor in time for the (whole) church to clearly hear the message. This is the reason almost all charismatic and pentecostal churches have stopped allowing this incredible gift of the Holy Spirit in their church services. Shame, double shame on our pastors and teachers of God's Word. The Lord sayes: "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge." Dr. Bill Hamon and Charles & Frances Hunter teach the accuracy of God's Word on this subject. Let he who speaks in tongue (outloud) in the church service, pray, believe to give the interpretation, the prophecy of edification and comfort to the body of believers present.

Jesus never spoke, much less, taught about this. This is a text taken out of context. When this happened, there were many people from different areas/regions who spoke different dialects (example, as in India). The Holy Spirit gave the gift to the apostles to understand the different dialects from people of different regions to be able to teach them the Gospel as they were to spread themselves to the nations. Tongues comes from the concept of LANGUAGE. I can speak in my native TONGUE which is Greek. When you speak in your native tongue, that is your native language. The religion that teaches this is the Pentecostal. Jesus ever instructed this and never gave religions different gifts so no one would think they are better than the other. It is made up by humans desiring to be differently gifted. If this were true it would be somehow in the commandments to Israel. Do not forget the Holy Bible or scriptures was given to Israel. No where in the Holy Land of Israel is this considered. You cannot make yourself better in the eyes of God. Peace be with you.

I have a problem with this way of thinking. If one truly can interpret the language spoken i think that person will do it. It must be known that there IS an interpreter present BEFORE you permit yourself to speak in tongues. Read 1 Corinthians 14. The best solution is to desire the gift of prophecy instead or desire the gift of interpretation so you can interpret your own tongue.

Yes there are also demonic tongues but you arent going to find a believer in Jesus speaking a demonic tongue. That only haopens if you intentionally give yourself over to witchcraft. Hope this helps. . Here's my experience: When I was 16, i received tongues without ever even reading about or hearing it, when I was pleasing with God to help me know how to pray for a specific situation. And I think even more than the specific tongues and interpretation, it was his overwhelming presence in the room and his love, coupled with that very small display of his power at work in his body.

Also I happened to notice your screen name. "Hope filled sinner." A lot shifted for me when I understood that the scriptures declare that I once was by very nature a sinner in opposition to God, but that by his blood he has made me a new creation in Christ. I can still sin amd my flesh is still there waging war against me, but in my spirit, I am born again and called the righteousness of Christ. God has given me everything I need to live a life of godliness, etc etc (so many scriptures). So instead of "I'm a sinner, I will always be a sinner but don't sin," which led me into thinking things like "well, here's that one temptation i always lose to, let me give into it because I always feel powerless against it." I realized I had the power in christ as a new creation not to sin against Him. I could still sin but if I do I am not acting in my new identity but my old one. By nature now, my spirit is redeemed and I need to let the Spirit lead me and keep in step with him, not identify or have my identity in who I used to be, "sinner." Jesus paid too high a price for me not to have to be identified that way any more. I still have to repent daily etc and keep growing in sanctification. But I no longer see my core identity as sinner. I hope that might help you too. When I made that shift, suddenly certain sin I just couldn't overcome was broken off!!!

There's never a single instance of someone speaking in the tongues of angels in the new testament since the indwelling of the Holy Spirit after Jesus returned to the Father. You cannot cast out demons, or heal as you claim because you lie about tongues. The verse you cite as evidence for angelic tongues is not actually saying that it's a gift of the holy spirit it says" If I could speak in the tongues of man or of angels but did not have love I'd be a resounding gong or clanging cymbal. " it's not talking about the tongues of angels being part of the gift it's talking about love being the key principle of faith. You claim a gift but can only perform the version of it mentioned only once and that version is the one that can't be proven like the miracle of speaking in the tongues of man? Sir, repent, for your salvation repent! What are you doing? Lying for precieved holiness? Encouraging others to follow suit? You are the wolf leading the herd to the slaughter! Don't you care or is the momentum of your false holiness more important to you? May God help you because you are doomed.

Jesus baptized me in the Holy Spirit, at 14 years old, in 1971. I'd never seen or heard tongues, but the tongues began to pour forth. It was real, it was God. Years later, while sitting alone, quietly praying, I slipped into praying in tongues. Not the same, powerful experience, but a more gentle conversation, spirit to Spirit with the Lord. I was attending a Presbyterian, traditional church back then. A few months later I met a woman that invited me to a Spirit filled bible study & church. It was 1984, 13 years after my initial baptism in the Spirit. It was my first time going to a pentecostal church. I knew nothing about the gifts of the Spirit. As I dove into the bible, learning alongside other Spirit filled ladies, my understanding opened up. I saw & heard people praying tongues, under the influence of the Holy Spirit. I also witnessed a lady in a church service that I believe was a witch, speaking or praying loudly in another tongue. I felt an evil presence when she did her thing.

There is absolutely nothing mysterious about Biblical "tongues" - and there is only one type - when referring to something spoken, they are nothing more than real, rational language(s); usually, but not always, unknown to those listening to them, but always known by the speaker(s) - it’s their native language (in some cases, it is a language the speaker has learned). In contrast, the “tongues” Pentecostal and Charismatic Christians are producing today is an entirely self-created phenomenon. It is non-cognitive non-language utterance; random free vocalization based upon a subset of the existing underlying sounds (called phonemes) of the speaker’s native language, and any other language(s) the speaker may be familiar with or have had contact with. It is, in part, typically characterized by repetitive syllables, plays on sound patterns, alliteration, assonance, and over-simplification of syllable structure. It is also interesting to note that any disallowed sound combinations, i.e. consonant clusters, in the speaker’s native language are also disallowed in his/her tongues-speech. Further, this subset of phonemes typically contains only those sounds which are easiest to produce physiologically. Occasionally some speakers will use two or more subsets of phonemes to generate glossolalia, producing what, to them, sounds like two (or more) distinct “tongues languages”, thus claiming to be able to speak in “divers tongues”. There is absolutely _nothing_ that “tongues-speakers” are producing that cannot be explained in relatively simple linguistic terms. Conversely, when it comes to something spoken, there are absolutely _no_ Biblical references to “tongues” that do not refer to, and cannot be explained in light of, real rational language(s), though it may not be the explanation you want to hear, and it may be one which is radically different from what you believe, or were taught. _Nowhere in the Bible is modern tongues-speech advocated or evidenced._ “Praying in the Spirit” does _not_ refer to the words one is saying. Rather, it refers to how one is praying. In the three places it is used (Corinthians, Ephesians, and Jude), there is absolutely zero reference to 'languages' in connection with this phrase. “Praying in the Spirit” should be understood as praying in the power of the Spirit, by the leading of the Spirit, and according to His will. I'm not doubting or questioning the 'tongues experience'; glossolalia as the spiritual tool that it is, can be very powerful and, for many people, the experience is profound. As one commenter put it, “Speaking in tongues distracts the ego/analytical/conscious mind while leaving the subconscious (the heart) wide open to import the divine." Both the spiritual and physical benefits of using this tool are also well documented. Again though, it is important to note that this same statement can be made for virtually _any_ other culture that practices glossolalia. Religious and cultural differences aside, the glossolalia an Evenki Shaman in Siberia, a vodoun priestess in Togo and a Christian tongues-speaker in Alabama are producing are in no way different from each other. They’re all producing their glossolalia in the exact same way; they just have different explanations and beliefs as to why they’re doing it, and where it comes from. ‘Tongues’ (read, *‘languages’* ) - the divine gift, is the God given ability effortlessly learn to speak and be understood through real-language barriers. It is not xenoglossy, nor is it modern tongues-speech.
