With their new album 'Conduit' hailing a return to form, Bring The Noise UK Editor Ian Arnold headed down to The Garage, London, to have a chat with a couple of the boys from Funeral For A Friend. This is what went down...

I still love Tales Don't Tell Themselves. Remember going to see the album tour (Wolverhampton I think) and it was great. There are some nice heavy ones on there like Out of Reach and All Hands on Deck Pt1. The main thing that makes those songs sound poppy (IMHO) is that they really go to town on vocal harmonies and there's no screaming really.

style. Anyway, the fact that they show their despise for those 2 albums doesn't mean that one cannot enjoy them if he likes them. :-) it's FFAF as well. :-)

I can see your point. "History" and "Drive" are pretty light. But it also has some hard songs. I dunno, I really think that if they wanted to break into the mainstream, they woulda went more "emo", seeing as Taking Back Sunday and Fall Out Boy were blowing up big time in 2005-7. To me, TDTT is more alternative/soft rock. I really have a hard time seeing any teenie-boppers or scene kids enjoying that style. But yah, everyone has feelings about it. I actually HATED it at first. But it grew on me.

Oh no, just because the band dislikes them won't change how I feel about them. I love em. Always will. But as far as the pressure, I really don't think that was the case. I mean, they got signed to Atlantic Records BEFORE Hours. So I really doubt that the label was pressuring them to make the lighter album that became Tales. They obviously saw how much fans loved CDADIC and Hours, so why ask them to change? I think the band truly WANTED to make Tales. Now they regret it. Just my thought though.

Yes, but Hours is a bit "softer" than CD already and it worked really well anyway, so I think the label encouraged them to make an album that continued the "poppish" trend, convinced that it could break even more into the mainstream. TDTT was the result, whether one likes it or not. Many fans consider it as a failure, but I also read comments by many other fans that say TDTT is their favourite FFAF album. De gustibus. :-)

They say that about those 2 albums in every single interview they do. Of course everyone has his own opinion, and so do they; I personally dislike those records, especially TDTT. I, too, feel they kind of got lost after CD and Hours, and only with Welcome Home Armageddon have they recovered from it. But as I was saying, that's just my point of view. :-)

Mmm, of course one can hardly tell if what they are saying is true or not, but I tend to believe them. Maybe it's because I share their current view about those records. What I think is that they did TDTT because there was a lot of pressure going on from their label, and they couldn't say no. Then they did M&H, maybe trying to recreate the musical "emotions" that they had put into CD and Hours in order to make it up for fans who disliked TDTT, or to try and have success again by imitating that

Kind of a bummer to see your favorite band talking shit about your favorite two albums of theirs. But I guess I'm not so mad they're not touring the US anymore, seeing as they don't play anything off those albums anymore. Oh well.

I understand & respect your opinion. But it kinda irks me that they say "If you don't love the music you're making then you shouldn't be making it." So, using that logic and their statements about how they dislike TDTT/M&H, then why did they make the albums? Ya know? If their hearts weren't into them, then they shouldn't have made them. Kinda makes me think they are just lying now to cover their tracks because they're embarrassed since all the CDADIC-fanboys cried for years about those records.
