This video is an interview with a pilot & flight instructor who experienced challenges when getting a medical, and together we explore the process of HIMS providers after medical deferral (due to a prior alcohol arrest) from the AME (Aviation Medical Examiner).

I’m on my second flying lesson, knowing very well I will be going through a similar situation. I was so close to giving up, but this video showed me I can prove I’m worthy of a medical even if it requires additional speed bumps along the way.

I'll share my experience to help others as well. I am also undergoing a HIMS AME process. My HIMS Neuro Psychologic w/ COG Screen took 1 day and cost me $2800, my HIMS Psychiatric appointment took a couple of hours and cost me $2000 and I am still doing random alcohol monitoring at least once a month. I am very close to getting an SI 1st class medical but the FAA still has my file. I have been pursuing all HIMS requirements since November 2022. Fingers crossed to fly again :) Congrats on her story.

Thank you so much for sharing your own experience to help others! It’s encouraging to hear you are also so close to your medical! And thank you again for sharing! It’s tough to do. Yet it helps encourage others.

Does she ever say how long the whole process took all together?

I believe from my recollection of our conversation that it took about 2 years, possibly a bit longer or shorter (don't hold me to that estimate though.)

It depends..... in my experience. I am speaking of alcoholism and the FAA medical. If you have the money then it could take as little as 12 months to a year and a half. But they want to see AT LEAST 4 months of monitoring before you can move to the next step. Also when you add the FAA Psychiatric, and FAA Neuro Psych with COG then that shoots the cost up. I didn't really have $12,000 just sitting there for all of the FAA requirements. I was not a pilot for an airline so I had to pay for all of my requirements. You don't pay that all at once but as time goes on in this process it will come out to somewhere in the $10K to $13K range, in my experience. This will take me about two years but could have taken me about 1 to one and a half years. I would say 1 year and a couple or a few months at minimum with everything going your way. Also waiting on the FAA takes a while. After you complete everything they want and your AME submits your SI package to them; you are still talking 5 months or longer to receive your SI medical. We submitted mine at the end of December 2023. I am still waiting on the FAA's response. Best wishes!!
