Jordon and her family are in their first year of flower farming but what they accomplished so far is nothing short of impressive. She is someone who I expect to have a big presence in the flower farming world, if not in Oklahoma, within the next 3 years. In this interview, we talk about the following:
1. Her growing space, set up, and varieties she’s focusing on
2. Sales outlets, including a deep dive into farmers markets and selling to florists
3. 1st year wins and struggles
You can follow Jordon on Instagram @jordonsflowerfarm and her website is jordonsflowerfarm.com/

💐 Looking for a reliable, rugged and refined focal that you can succession plant throughout the entire season? You need lilies! I'm selling 25x and 50x increments on bit.ly/44s6v4o - We've got roselilies, non fragrant lilies, and double non fragrant lilies for multiple weeks.

I agree! I've been staring at it half the time, so that I can do something similar. I'm redoing my office soon & am needing to create a good filming space! Love the background!

I just can not thank you enough. You have really contributed a lot to this space. I thank you both for reminding me that we are a country made up of very different people who have several important commonalities. We share values for people and communities, and honest concern for this planet. The more our businesses focus on the outdoors and drawing people out of their homes to make purchases of plant materials for the home, the healthier we all will be physically and mentally. 🤷‍♀️💗

This comment made my day! And you are so right - it kills me when we end up categorizing this country and its people as blue or red. We can be on different sides of the political spectrum yet share the same exact values for people and communities. And also yes to getting people out. Nature tends to bring out the better parts of people in my view :)

This was a very interesting interview - very inspiring Jordan to learn about your journey and what appears to be measurable success so quickly. You are careful to point out the wins that are not only financial (annuals do not work as well for your vision and don't keep trying a specific dahlia that is not going to thrive in your very hot climate) and you instinctively know when to change strategy (bed making with the small tractor did not work as well for you and switching from giving a number on stems to not on availability). I enjoyed listening. To the most wonderful host of this interview - you are fabulous and I would love to hear from small flower farmers as well and everything in between. So enjoyable.

Many dahlia growers, including myself, have dropped Cafe au Lait and switched to Labrynth. It's a beautiful, highly productive, easy to grow and store, dinnerplate dahlia with a multi shaded peachy swirly look. I love it.

Something I would have loved to hear more about is her debt/costs. How much did it cost for all of the peonies, roses, & dahlias, & how did they pay for them & the tractors etc.? What is her & her husbands salary? I know thats personal info for some people but i just can't imagine the average person, that makes about $70,000/year, being able to take on that kind of risk of going that big that fast... or maybe I'm completely wrong & they do make an average salary & are just taki g that huge risk & maybe I should be taking on more of a risk than I am... lol

Watching from Europe. I am always surprised by the amount of space and funding you guys have available in the states. I am familiar with the expression, go big or go home, but how are you guys financing all of this?
@bareflowerfarm
@bareflowerfarm 10 ай бұрын
Hi! This is a good question and the funding part is one I am always thinking of doing a video on but have never found the right time for it. Here in the US, depending on where one lives, there can be alot of land such as where Jordon lives (Oklahoma). In my area (New Jersey), if land is cheap, it is cheap for a reason - often because it cannot be built on or has limitations on what can be done with it. I live in a very densely populated state so to buy a property like Jordon's it would easily be over $1million and out of reach for a flower farmer! Regarding funding- you know what they say about Americans. We like our credit cards. However, without getting into too much details since it's not mine to share about Jordon's personal finances, one of the reasons why we connected easily and became friends is because we have similar circumstances. We are both lucky enough have great full time jobs and be the breadwinners of our family. Because of this, both of us are able to fund our farming projects by reinvesting the cash we earn from our day jobs. Jordon and I both operate at a high level in our daytime careers. While this comes with a decent paycheck, it also means we are usually operating at our physical and mental limits when it comes to flower farming. Probably a reason why you don't see many of our colleagues going into farming. I truly think farming is the hardest job on the planet and only crazy people (like us) would want to have a side passion that pays basically minimum wage lol!

@@bareflowerfarm thank you for your open response. I found it very illuminating. I too work full time as a gardener and landscaper and flower farm on the side. There isn’t much money in what I do but there is a lot of crossover between tools and materials I can legitimately set off against tax for my main business and what I require as a flower farmer. However, I am in the UK near London and just everything cost so much right now! I farm on other peoples land, which is the only way I can for now. I dream of having just one acre to set up permanently. Maybe, if I focus more on the tough economic truths, which you outline in your videos, someday I might get there. Thanks and keep at it!

I know it is so hard being near London. That is a massively high standard of living place. Your comment is giving me serious thought about a video focused on this topic. I would be remiss to say that there is no way we could have afforded our current property without the greatest wealth generator for the middle class- and that is the stock market. I basically took all the savings I had when I was in my early 20s, living at home and put it in the market. Even with my current income, it wouldn’t be enough. My takeaway for that video is, no amount of money is too small to start investing bc over time, the stock market will ALWAYS go up, and that’s the only place where the average person has a shot of generating wealth

This sounds bigger than any of the experienced Flower and Produce farms on youtube and those people live on their farm and are out working it every day. Would have been nice to see b roll of this mythical place you can do while working a separate 50hour/wk job. Take it slower, master a smaller patch for a couple years.

I encourage you to follow Jordan on social media, especially on instagram if you're on there @Jordonsflowerfarm. She chronicles her progress and all of the blooms she's pumping out. If she can do it and is growing successfully, then more power to her for going big and hitting it out of the ballpark. She is smart and knows to assess where she is failing to either change things up or learn from it. We should be encouraging and rooting for her. At the end of the day, a big, young and successful flower farm is better for our local community, local economy, and carbon footprint.
