What did he do? He's not a ZeniMax owner, so he doesn't profit personally from this deal. He said in the interview that the ZeniMax teams are finding-out about the deal at the same time the public are. He looks a bit sad in this video, I think. He might not be happy over the deal, or maybe over not getting any proceeds from it.

I would find it unusual for the company's owners to give some of their ownership in the company to employees. I don't see how that would benefit the company owners. Holding company stock wouldn't serve a purpose for employees, since there's no established value for the company stock and the stock basically decides who controls how much of the company. The only value a stake in the company would hold for an employee would be if the company was sold as it just has been. But they couldn't predict that and it wouldn't be a likely thing to happen at any particular time. And they could only get a stake in the company if the company's owners decided to give up some of theirs to employees - which doesn't make sense for a privately-owned company to do. It's not like Todd or other employees could buy stocks through a stock exchange - they couldn't.

Don't think the teams get anything from this deal. As Todd said, the teams are finding-out about the deal at the same time as the public are. Likely, only the ZeniMax owners will receive payment from Microsoft for the deal. But I hope the teams have better focus under Microsoft and so make better games - mainly referring to Bethesda Game Studios which has taken far too long between titles to produce far too simplistic games.

The ZeniMax money people and the venture (vulture) capitalist who those people owe money were the ones pushing most of the worst of it. Todd's reputation went through more hell then it should have because the pressure they put on getting things out (Fallout 76 and to a lesser extent Fallout 4 [and I loved Fallout 4])

I was not mad at them, it's the people over them that I was going at. At least with Todd I can see his love for making games by the way he talks about the process.

Right? Its easy for people to dog on the guy when he promotes something, as is his job, that doesn't quite turn out how fans expect (FO76, aspects of FO4 and so on). And then you hear him talk and you realize he's just a dude who cares about his work and is ultimately the face who has to take the scrutiny (aside from Pete ofc, but he's not on the dev side so people won't hit him as harshly). That's why I'll always have Todd's back, it can't be easy being in his shoes.

But the game is bad. I watched the video and it was oversimplifying elements that do not make the game any better. One example is Superhuman Gambit or whatever that quest was called. The video author claims it is unique and makes the game good because in that particular quest you can get a rare ending if you explore a particular location. Sure on paper it sounds great but in reality it is a waste of resources, it rewards people who didn't even think about exploring Hubris Comics HQ but those that just stumbled upon it and searched it thorough-fully. Here is how this should look like: In Fallout 1 you gain ability to persuade The Master to kill himself because you talked to Scribe Vree in Brotherhood of Steel bunker. Why is it done correctly? The bunker is a major and unique location the game tries to make it appealing by pointing out soldiers in power armors and hinting that you can join them. So most players will naturally visit it and if they search it and talk to Vree they will naturally learn the weakness of The Unity. If Fallout 3 would give a hint that you should explore Hubris Comics building then I wouldn't mind.

I don't think Todd has any ownership in ZeniMax. He started working at Bethesda as a game tester, and he's still an employee of ZeniMax. So, he doesn't get any payout from Microsoft's acquisition of ZeniMax.

If you work in a senior position of a company for as long as Todd has, you will end up with some kind of stock options

Because PlayStation is about Naughty Dog, Insomniac, Media Molecule, Team Ico, Ready at Dawn. Sony doesn't care much for having colourful executives. The story-driven games themselves leap off the screen. If Microsoft actually invested in more cult game sequels e.g. Sunset Overdrive 2, they'd be more colourful to me and more like the 'heir to Dreamcast' label sometimes given to them.

I dunno, seems like they're making the right calls, getting the story driven games, and being a company that doesn't have to lie just to get people to buy their consoles I like most of the single player exclusives that Sony has, but they're still a scumbag company

statements like this is why microsoft might actually win this gen. They are making being on their ecosystem in some way whether xbox series x, s, xcloud, or PC almost mandatory. And then they are making the entry level so low that you kinda makes no sense not to jump in. You can go as low as a $299 console. Or even just pay for game pass and xcloud and stream them. Or you could play on PC. So given that this amazing deal is so accessible and affordable how can you not say yes. Only if you are some fanboy weirdo who refuses to get an xbox even though it makes so much sense to. Sure if you want to live your life that way you can. But if you care more about GAMES than fanboyism xbox is looking very good to the gamer. That is why they sold out. They are offering value to the gamer and people are noticing. Nah bethesda wants their games to be played by as many people as they can. I aint mad tbh, if I was making something I want a lot of people to enjoy it too, it’s one of the most sastifying thing to a creator imo.

I think that it's hard when games have a budget or dev cycle so massive, because they need to be "next gen", to appeal to a more niche audience. It seems they need to go super broad. Broad isn't always terrible though imo. They have all learned in the last few decades, through tons of research, that 90% of players only explore 5% of the game or only play for 20 hours or less (all ballparks) That said I think they can make games where the critical path / story path is a short and broad experience. Then fill out the rest of the world with stuff for the diehards. Agree / disagree?
