Cool Forgotten Weapons merch! shop.forgottenweapons.com
My opportunity to drive and shoot a T62 tank yesterday was a ton of fun - but there is so much more to that vehicle - and everything Battlefield Vegas is doing with their motor pool - than we could cover in one video. Today, I'm taking a moment to talk with Steve, who led the restoration of this vehicle. BFV is one of the very few places in the world that will restore not just the drive train of a vehicle, but also the ancillary systems (night vision, targeting, etc) and also the main armament. The business model is based on people paying for the experience of driving and shooting, but what that funds is a truly awesome team of passionate restorers and mechanics. It is a wonderful symbiosis of keeping history alive and giving people access to it.
Scott and Dimitri and the rest of the crew have their own KZfaq channel documenting much of their work on the vehicles - the real nuts and bolts that you will never see anywhere else. Check it out:

It might not have been used in the IDF due to the fact that by 1982, the Merkava Mk 2 was already rolling off the lines, and the logistics of maintaining additional T-62s was not worth it. To elaborate: In the mid-80's, by the time this tank would've gone through the conversions to a Tiran 6 ("Tiran" meaning "Tyrant"), there was a major economic downturn (worldwide of course, but also in Israel) which forced the IDF to reorganize, consolidate resources and shut down many, many units. Part of that reorganization was to shut down units that had captured materiel, including the 440th Division (Made up of Tiran 4 and Tiran 5 tanks - converted T54s and T55s, respectively), and the 320th Brigade (made up of about a hundred Tiran 6 - the T-62). The Merkava Mk 1 was in production since 1979, and by 1982 production already shifted to the Merkava Mk 2. The Tiran 6 was clearly a relic at that point.

Finding the parts won't be that hard given how many of these tanks were built, but you might have a better time if you have close enough to working parts, going to a machine shop and having them try and fill in the difference (remanufacturing the part), or having them reverse engineer you a brand new one, especially if you have the same part in multiple spots on the tank (even a mirror image part in the opposite track could be enough), and they said they have 2 project tanks to pull parts from, so that doubles the chances of having anything working at all

Former IDF tanker here: Very unlikely that this was supposed to be converted to "TIRAN", in 1982, perhaps to "ACHZARIT" heavy APC. Israel had full brigades with captured T55 & T62 during the 70's but phased out in the 80's when The Merkavas already in full productions and deployment.

The Hebrew writing in red letters over the numerics "758" (in Arabic) says " Bambaline", "Bambalian" or something similar . It has no actual meaning as a word, so can be a nickname for the vehicle, of a person (graffiti?), or as he suggested- of the intended place or process for it. In the back of the turret there is an IDF vehicle number 130758 צ (letter pronounced "tzadi" ). Serial armoured vehicles in IDF have their numbers on a velded and painted plates, showing this specimen was really left aside.

(Yes, I posted this as a regular comment above). My grandfather had served in the 6 Day War with the 51st Golani. He was (and still is) a religious man, so he was fasting during the start of the Yom Kippur War. Being called up as a reservist, he reported to duty, whereupon he was ordered to drive an armour plated VW bus south, and not to leave it under any circumstance. He was confused because he was a Golani, a specialist in fighting in the Golan Heights. However, he followed the orders and drove south. When he arrived at his destination, the commanding officer ordered him to drive a tank (after speaking with him more, I believe it to have been a halftrack). Again, being an infantryman, he had no experience driving armoured vehicles, so the commanding officer told him "drive this one mission and we'll see how it turns out". Having returned from the mission, the commanding officer called out for him "WHERE IS LIEUTENANT B BRING ME LIEUTENANT B". When my grandfather arrived, the officer held up the VW logo and said to him "this is all that is left of your vehicle. It was bombed with the others while you were out". He went on to drive a few more missions in multiple different armoured vehicles before finishing out the rest of the war in the Golan Heights. When asked about the war, about fighting this tank in a halftrack, and fighting an enemy against all odds, he simply responds "נס, נס גדול" "Miracle, a great miracle".

A standard trait of Cold War Soviet armor, they weren't designed to conduct defensive hull down warfare like NATO tanks, so needing to be able to have significant gun depression for shooting from behind a berm or other defensive position wasn't a requirement. As a result, they had lower turrets, and were designed to be smaller targets.

I am really impressed how they found an okay barrel for this tank. Look at that damage at the base near mantlet! Guns this size must endure extreme pressures while firing, yeeting such heavy shells even if with half propellant charge is tremendously brutal. And yet even such deep pits and scratches are not affecting it as much as I thought... I'm always sceptical about not firing such guns from the inside, but here in this particular instance I'd really rather not be close to it exploding if anything goes wrong...

I don't know what's cooler about Battlefield Vegas. The 200+ historical and modern guns you can actually shoot or the vehicle collection parked outside, every single of them in mint condition. I went there four years ago to take a peek and ended up spending a grand on the range. The staff was extremely attentive and gun safety was enforced at all times. It was an absolute blast!

Wonder if it was actually a hit from an airburst round, or perhaps it may have been a small HEAT type bomblet from something like a Rockeye clusterbomb or similar? I can't imagine an airburst doing that kind of shrapnel damage, or leaving copper colored fragments behind. But a HEAT bomblet hitting the gun and detonating might easily punch clean through the gun and then into the hull below it.

That bloke sounds like he is not a native of Arizona. Somewhere much further south? Nice work! The fuel bill for these critters is impressive, but like owning a Bugatti Veyron; if you can afford the car, you can afford filling the tank. Or like shopping for a Rolls Royce: If you have to ask the price, you can't afford it. The most adventurous vehicle project I ever worked on was an Australian "Tracked Truck" of WW2 vintage. One of possibly two ever made, it was basically a soft-skin cab and tray on a "stretched" Bren Carrier hull. It now resides in a museum; not sure if it is fully functional, though.

@@TheChieftainsHatch I assume A/C in a T-62 is non-existent....I am impressed you fit into the darn thing. One of the most interesting things about Soviet tanks is ammo stowage. I have been inside a T-55 (a misspent youth) and like the T-62 and apparently the T-72, ammo is spread around all over the tank. It seems it is no coincidence that Soviet tanks suffered an lot of, how shall we put it, "turret displacement" when the ammo on the bottom of the hull brews up. Also, there does not appear to be any "wet" stowage, and no way to provide such stowage.
