Great interview ... I'm in the process of deciding on a password manager to buy and was very interested in what these guys had to say. The subscription thing now turns me off, they were quick to say that it will be great for all the future improvements to come BUT .. no mention of what those improvements might me! For something that is supposed to simplify my life on my computer the whole thing just sounds messy. Thanks for delivering a great session Mark.

I don't have a paid password manager yet. Try to inform me of the different options is pretty hard. Have used the built in password app that comes with Apple. I cannot find any clip where that app is compared to all the others. Why is that? Isn't Apples built in version enough? Thanks in advance

Very interesting interview, thanks Mark. The arguments that subscription services allow for updates just doesn’t sit right with me. I moved from Adobe to Affinity for that exact reason, and the one-off payment still gives me regular updates. It’s a sales choice, pure and simple.

Good interview and left me thinking this:- I use Enpass and have for a very long time. Why should I switch? Further, I genuinely do not understand what is ground breaking here, am struggling to see the benefit of this service and why to use it other than what appears to be targeted changes to their existing users who I get the impression are not too happy. Is this to cover costs for the online advertising and sponsoring? Not a dig as such BUT just trying to truly understand all this making the world a better place crap - I mean evil greedy apple uses the same lying mantra so....?

Nothing about the 1Password 8 change is ground breaking. AgileBits is doing spin control because they pissed off their userbase. Is the new version better? Depends on who they ask and if their favorite features have been overhauled in a negative direction.
@leetronix
@leetronix 2 жыл бұрын
@@SierraGolfNiner Yep I agree. Spin control is spot on as well. Rule one always put your customers interests first, granted easier said than done, but non the less customer is a customer..I did not like the founder / President’s attitude one bit, came across sly, pretentious / arrogant and not convincing with his demeanour and attitude at all. The other guy who looked like a grizzly adams (showing my age now) was trying to be diplomatic but I found him very condescending about how he thought people were talking about the obvious. Well they are your customers you are just putting down and calling them stupid - to me that was disgraceful, but I think he did not realise how that maybe came across giving him the benefit of the doubt.

LeeTronix, you are allowed to have your opinion on Apple being 'evil greedy' using a 'lying mantra.' But I would encourage you to read Walter Isaacson's biography of Steve Jobs, to understand that Apple did not come up with their way and insight overnight. I've been a Windows corporate and government trainer for 30 years, and self-professed geek. I was very doubtful about the success of the iPhone and swore as long as they were with AT&T I would never bow down for my own reasons. I didn't try the iPhone until it went with other phone carriers. I would stay with Apple as long as they continued to do what they said they were going to do. Personally, I ended up converting all my devices, over time, to Apple. I watched closely if their actions and sayings matched... Which they did and continue. Now if you don't want to read the biography on Steve Jobs, I understand. It’s much easier to hold on to your opinion of "making the world a better place crap"... rather than let new information change your mind.

@@geekmeee Thanks Geek for your reply and thoughts, and in many ways I agree. I originally started my Apple journey around 1981 give or take and I use to be a computer programmer too boot (40s plus experience now) 😬 I then became the CEO of a corporate global business (not going to name) and we used mainly the typical PC’s back then like IBM, Apricots, Wang, Ferranti etc etc and the occasional Apple! So fast forward to naughties…having watched Windows argue with every OS and defend its “legitimate” software claims I was always batting on a personal level for Apple. I think Steve Jobs had as many great aspects as he did sadly have as many bad points but thats me being picky. Yes I liked SJ and you knew where you stood with him and was as straight in a business sense as you could get. When Cook took over I knew this was going to be bad just wrong move for Apple but decided to give the benefit of the doubt. I consider myself right with my view on him and Apple now. I look at it from a corporate perspective and a personal one. So nearly two yrs ago I stopped more or less in purchasing Apple products and re-structuring my tech setup and systems etc which is very dull and time consuming. Anyway I feel Apple lost the SJ way or should say Cook has been erasing that culture entirely and putting greed first above philosophy. Yes company’s need to make money I surely know that but its the details and all the subtle creepy ways Apple cleverly fool people with their flash and portrayed image that is the polar opposite of what is was. I could go on in real micro depth here but these are my views and thoughts and some real world experiences behind the scene with the Apple tragic machine, Thanks for reading and welcome your thoughts 👍

I don't use 1Password, and it's highly unlikely I will change from using eWallet, which I've used for over 15 years. eWallet doesn't use subscription, runs on all platforms, and has great, personalized support. I use eWallet specifically because it has a much lower profile than their competitors, which means it's a smaller "target" for those who want to steal my confidential information. I'm not going to bash 1Password, but with a password manager, it all boils down to trust, doesn't it?

Great interview. I still can’t abide their decision and will migrate away for these reasons: 1. Electron is a thoughtcrime; it doesn’t integrate well into macOS and it’s causing insane disk usage 2. Their communication was extremely arrogant and tone-deaf; they’re isolating their most loyal users who promoted them 3. Subscription-only; I don’t like it but I can swallow it. What I hate is that they’re obliging us to use their sync service. For a password manager, the users’ ownership of their data is table stakes 4. This is part of a bigger pattern of 1P becoming a pump-n-dump VC operation
@SierraGolfNiner

Fully agree'd with #2. A lot of the public communication from AgileBits has been done terribly. Their customer service was evasive and outright lied about the Electron issue. Personally? Electron is fine, don't care. But I do care when they lie to the users and try to hide what they are doing.

He said it does provide the exact same user experience on all platforms, but that's exactly the problem (beyond memory, energy etc) of Electron. I don't want the same experience on all platforms. I want it to look and feel like a well-done Mac-app on macOS, a well-done iPhone/iPad-app on iOS and likewise on other OSes if I used them. User interfaces differ on different OSes, and the apps should too to adhere to these different paradigms.

The 1Password gentleman took less than a minute addressing the SUBSCRIPTION model issue. Unsuccessfully, IMO. As a payer, I will never appreciate that model and only accept it under duress That's why there is seldom if ever a choice for the user. They covet that revenue stream. I understand the updates required for this software. But why do they need monthly subscription? They should have a flat rate and provide updates for 3-5 years. Just like how phone manufacturers do it. The monthly subscription model is just a way for 1password to get more money from consumers.
@geekmeee
@geekmeee 2 жыл бұрын
"...to get more money from consumers." That is what they're suppose to be doing to keep the lights on. BUT they are also suppose to deliver more services for that money. Right now it's all about talking a good game and betting on the future. Show me what I can do now...Not in the future. As a 5 to 6 yr 1Password user.... I'm out.
@ea9849
@ea9849 2 жыл бұрын
@@geekmeee to keep the lights on, they can charge an upfront fee. 1password has seen how Adobe and other players in the game get monthly revenue from their customers and want to implement it the same way. But that's not a company that cares about its users.
@ea9849
@ea9849 2 жыл бұрын
Mark, why would you like my comment and then unlike it? If you chose to like it, it will show up for more people and would attract attention it deserves. One time fee for software for 3-5 years should be normalized. Companies just see how much more money they can get from their consumers through monthly payments and decide to go that route. Which is greedy. I'm a developer, and yes we need to get paid, but the payment for one-time fee is enough for a customer
