James Marsters is just such a nice guy. There is probably a huge line and he didn’t rush Mickey and laughed (in more of a touched way) at the skit. It warms my heart that even after years of going to these conventions that he tries to make a memorable moment for whoever took the time to wait in a long line to meet him. Love how he did a shout out for other characters and the writers on the show especially when everyone gushes over how great Spike is. I have watched a lot of interviews and he always contributes the success of the show to everyone working on that show.

The ending scene where Spike just sits down with Buffy is my favourite. He has a lot of empathy and even becoming a vampire can’t change that completely. When he could hurt people that would sometimes come out in knowing how to hurt them even more but it’s still there.

The only reason he changed and showed more sympathy could be the side effects of the initiatives chip. Remember that vampires are demons without souls so all affection they show is twisted and never true but somehow Spike without a soul managed to somehow get some humanity back so I think not killing so many humans due to the chip somehow triggered something which never happened to any normal vampire without a soul...

angel’s curse and spike’s chip are not really comparable. angel was forced to have a soul which gave him the ability to feel empathy and connect to people in a human way which is why he does good and is completely different from the soulless demon we know as angelus. spike was given a chip which keeps him from physically harming humans but he is still a demon without a soul so when he chooses to do good or shows that he’s capable of empathy (like him comforting buffy in a moment of sadness) it’s a much bigger deal.

wait how is the guy who is having regular sex "involuntarily celibate"
@phueal
@phueal 5 ай бұрын
@@Cardboardbocs “incel” is more than it’s literal definition, it’s about your attitude to women. Whether you see them as people in their own right or you see them as sexual objects who exist only for your gratification. An “incel” rages against women because he believes that he’s entitled to love from them because, after all, they exist for his sexual gratification and they’re failing at that duty. Andrew Tate was an “incel” in common usage even though by all accounts he was extremely sexually active, because he wasn’t actually connecting with any of the women he was abusing, he just had a lot of human fleshlights on hand. A man who is not an “incel” recognises that every woman can make decisions about who she forms relationships with, that it’s perfectly possible that no woman would ever fall in love with them, and that if that’s happening it’s because that man has not worked on himself and made himself an appealing person to spend time with. They are accusing Spike of being an incel because of the way he reacted to Buffy’s rejection (and to Dru’s in Lovers Walk): by blaming them, not himself, and by reacting to it with angry vengeance instead of self-reflection. It’s not their duty to please him, they’re free to choose not to be in a relationship with him, but he’s not accepting that and instead considers it their fault somehow.

It cracks me up every time I see Spike go from the London accent to Yorkshire in the flashbacks and Angelus says when did you start speaking like that lol as a Yorkshireman James nailed it haha accents change drastically throughout England within each section and the most typical one you hear in movies is the Queens English version that you'd hear in London etc but we don't all speak like the movies portray, so it was refreshing to hear James, back in the day when I watched this as a teen each week, talk like he lived down the street from me lol

This show has always been big on continuity. One of the earliest examples is back in season 2 when Jenny Calendar was buying the Orb of Thessala in the magic shop. The shopkeeper was surprised Miss Calendar actually knew what it was used for (Spirit Vault of the Undead), since "all these New Age magic users use them as paperweights." Fast forward to the first part of that season's finale - Becoming Part 1 - and Willow telling the group that, according to what Miss Calendar left behind, they needed something called an Orb of Thessala to do the curse. To which Giles responded "Oh! I have one. I've...been using it as a paperweight..." @@HighQueenChelsea

Fun Spike/James Marsters fact: James really does have a scar on his head where Spike does, so instead of trying to hide it with makeup, canonically he has that scar from his fight with the Chinese Slayer. Vampires don't usually scar, but that sword was magical. It's mentioned in canonical comics and such. I've been holding that comment in since Spike was introduced lol.

This is such a great episode, really unpacks what makes Spike the character he is, and shows the journey he's going on. I will say that I don't think he is really all that much of an incel. As mentioned, his response to Cecily ridiculing him is to hate himself more than her/women, and once Drusilla comes along he immediately transfers his romantic attention to her and becomes wholly invested in her. None of that really says incel to me. Spike isn't especially entitled, he just has basically zero impulse control. But beneath his violent impulses are a consistent desire for love, not for control.
@ameliacraiig4193
@ameliacraiig4193 8 ай бұрын
Perfectly said. I'm sure an incel would've revelled in the woman's misery, then taken advantage of her vulnerability. Spike's impulse when seeing Buffy upset, was to ask what's wrong, then provide comfort.

He referenced that she'd been carrying on with a "chaos demon" that's all disgusting "slime and antlers"... and here a couple seasons later we get an actual flashback to it with the guy standing there awkwardly, like, "Sorry, man, I didn't know she was seeing anyone else." "Fool for Love" is a fantastic episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It's a great example of the show's ability to balance humor, action, and character development. The episode begins with Buffy being defeated by an ordinary vampire. This is a huge blow to her confidence, and she's left wondering how she could have lost. She turns to Spike for help, and he tells her the story of how he killed two Slayers many years ago."Fool for Love" is a great episode because it explores some complex themes in a way that is both entertaining and thought-provoking. It's also a great showcase for the cast, particularly Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz.

Giles explained in the series premiere (1.02 Welcome to the Hellmouth) that this did not start out as a paradise. First there were demons, they moved to the demon dimensions, then there were humans. The "last" demon fed on the blood of a human, and he another, and another. Thus vampires. End of season 3 Anya said all the demons who walk the Earth are "tainted with human blood". (I guess she didn't know about The Scourge, the football head demons that killed Doyle).

So, I liked rooting for his redemption arc and ending up with Buffy. I don't think Marketa will change her opinion of him and I understand since his actions aren't easy to forgive. No Angel and Darla have not killed a slayer before that we know of. Drusilla did kill a slayer on 2x21, but I believe that was her first also.

I think something very important needs to be pointed out just so that there isn't confusion: having a chip is NOT, IN ANY WAY, the same as having a soul. Yes, Spike is unable to physically hurt humans anymore, but that does not take away his WANT to hurt humans. His actions and decisions are still very much made by a soulless demon and he does not operate with the same moral compass that the Scooby gang does. Equating souled Angel with chipped Spike is not a good idea!!! Please keep this in mind going forward.

Omg, I get the same feeling that I do with Andrew Lincoln hearing James in his true accent and it's so crazy to me. It's so cool that yall met James, he seems pretty chill and humble.

One of my absolute favorite episodes, Spike was something to fear when they first introduced this character, then they clipped his balls. This episode reminds us just how dangerous he is.

Outside of the big 3-5 episodes this is the shows best episode. Superbly written and just underrated enough.

I liked Chris pointing out that Spike didn't really know those slayers. He killed them and acts as if he were an expert on slayer psychology.

"Look at the back of that head, who is that?" Up until now I didn't realize the detail that those 3 are Angelus, Darla and Drusilla. They appear later in the episode, but I missed that moment where they bump into him before he's a vampire lol (maybe I noticed that detail 20 years ago but I forgot idk)

Riley taking the slaying that seriously where as the Scoobies handling it the way they usially do, shows another struggle Riley has with The Initiative no longer being around. Spike, as a human (William) liked the 1800's version of Cordelia (Cecily). Love that they recognized Angelus when Spike bumped into him. It's rare for people to do so. Buffy had an orgasm when Angel bit her and William had one when Drusilla bit him. Buffy got off on it with Riley after taking down the polgera and Spike got off on it with Drusilla after killing his first slayer. Spike to Joyce Summers in _Lovers Walk:_ "Have you *ever* seen a Chaos Demon? They're all slime and antlers. They're disgusting." The flashback to South America uses what was just a throwawy joke, and turns it into a world-building moment in this episode. That's what's great about this show compared to most others. I don't think it's a spoiler to say (and Suraj asked) that neither Angelus nor Darla has a confirmed slayer kill. Only Drusilla when she killed Kendra and Spike with the slayers shown in this episode's flashbacks.

I ship them too and I can definitely understand why some people don’t (although I think they’re wrong) because their relationship is very… complex. but at the end of the day I think it’s very real and beautiful.

Something to remember - Spike would have killed Buffy in their first encounter (she was saved by Joyce). And after he "got the chip out" in the prior episode he also got her down for a bite (she was saved by the chip). The show does a lot of comedy with him but dude is legit an extemely dangerous fighter.

Remember guys the demons were here first, so that's who the first slayer was fighting. The pure ones. The BIG ones, as well as their half-breed minions. IIRC not only that, but she was the one who booted the last pure demon Old One from the Earth.

Spike's accent changed because Anthony Stewart Head (whose natural accent is North London, but used a more upper-class accent as Giles) coached James Marsters on it. And the martial artist who played Xin Rong (the Chinese Slayer) was Ming Qui, who has been in 100's of movies, TV shows, video games, and even music videos. She's truly a badass!
