Ilham Aliyev is president of Azerbaijan and commander-in-chief of an army that for 16 years has been on the brink of war.
The southern Caucasus country has been locked in conflict with Armenia since the region of Nagorno Karabakh declared its independence from Azerbaijan in 1993.
Aliyev's country is also of significant strategic interest to Europe as it sits on an estimated five trillion cubic metres of natural gas.

Aliyev was receiving a lot of pressing, but he stood strong defended Azerbaijan and restored terriotorial integrity of his country. He is the best leader of Azerbaijan. Our support and love to him is eternal. Çox yaşa cənab Prezident.

It seems that Euronews' interview is focusing primarily on the territorial dispute, rather than bringing the Azerbaijani domestic politics. As long as gas/petrol supplies flow smoothly to Europe, the West will turn a blind eye towards the regime's authoritarian agenda. After all, it remains business as usual.

Wrong. In 1988, Azerbaijan and Armenia were still republics of the Soviet Union. This conflict wouldn't take place until after the breakup of the USSR in 1991.

Dreem Preter Karabakh always belonged to Armenia until the USSR gave it to Azerbaijan. Then in 1988 Azerbaijan started to bomb the capital of Karabakh (Stepanakert) which resulted the deaths of hundreds of Armenians. In response Armenians fought back and won the war.

Tekken Bullsh*t. Karabakh was recognised as a part of independent Azerbaijani Democratic Republic at the Paris Peace Conference in 1920 long before the Soviet Union was ever established. Your "capital" called 'stepanakert'(named after Stepan Shaumyan, a bolshevik villain and mass killer) was called Khankendi (Khan's village) and was populated mainly by Azerbaijanis before the Soviets came to power. The city of Shusha was the capital of the Azerbaijani Karabakh Khanate and was founded by our Panahali Khan.

niklaus benzt The truth is that Urartu was not an Armenian state. Irevan turned into a city only under the rule of Azerbaijani Turkic (Turcoman) Qaraqoyunlu dynasty. And five melikates were founded and supported by Azerbaiijani Turkic House of Safavi and Nadir Afshar who was of Turkic origin himself.

Azerbaijan is a modern Khanate. Its tribal leader is Ilham Aliyev Khan (Khan Aliyev II), and all of the people under him are part of the Aliyev dynasty (for example, very popular political propagandist Ganire Pashayeva is the sister of Aliyev's wife).

Well first of all its not 200. I am independent voter. I dont like anyone of them. I dont like opposition because they were at the power once! Nothing good happened. They were appointing major government positions to incompetent people. y if they come to power they will rip of Azerbaijan. They want to be extremly prowestern and I dont like it either. Regarding Nagorno Karabakh every president would hold this position. Again this is my subjective point of view.

They don't seam to care about Azerbaijanian issues, when they buy oil and gasses from us. If they feel that our nation is so corrupted as it is. Why even bother doing business? I don't think that corruption is the big issue here. I think it's something beyond that, such as religion differences. Unfortunately religion has been one of the major issues in conflicts and wars through out history. When it comes to Armenia, everyone these days seam to forgot what they have done to Azerbaijanians.

Everyone should start realizing that Karabagh and South-Azerbaijan belongs to Azerbaijan. Through out history, Azerbaijanians has been discriminated by many nations, such as Russia and Iran. The conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia, is a meaningless conflict that has harmed many civilians. The only thing that we wish is what belongs to us. To the hateful people: Instead of using all of your energy on war and hate, use it to regain foreign friendships and relationships.

The Armenians managed to protect themselves thus preventing the annihilation of another part of their nation which has been proven multiple times in the history. @sabr736 Even we helped our wounded enemies(British,Greek,French,Italians) in World WAr 1. We never kill someone who is wounded or has no weapon. Yes we have been and we are good warriors but we have never killed innocent people. Now i know you or someone won't believe me because i know your country's government has changed real historical facts. there more than 30,000 armenians in Azerbaijan. But we don't want to touch them because if they were bad they'd leave my country after war as others.

He is great! I adore him, and all his family. They are so kind, and open to people. They do our country great every day. And this is not only my personal opinion, a lot of people love them too. It's ok that someone looks on this world from the negative side and writes negative comments, but someone's negative point of view is just opinion but not a fact, and not an argument to conclude. There is up and downs in all countries, but in general and mean aspects we have all that we need for a stable good, successfully and happily living here.
