On June 29 1993 Michel Field interviewed Emmanuel Levinas on the occasion of the recent publication of "Dieu, la Mort et le Temps", a collection of Levinas's course materials. Field questions Levinas about the lateral character of his approach to philosophy at the crossroads of different civilizations. Levinas also talks about one of his favourite themes, the relation between one human and another, which consists of transcendence, "the exit from oneself".

Although I may not agree wit his ideas on subjective morality entirely... I really respect him and think he is a real legend! Thanks for the upload!

Fuck yea. This is exactly what I'm looking for. This is the first time I've seen this man and I only found out about him today while searching for "I am the other". Thanks blood.

E. Levinas was really one of the most important phenom./existentialist philosophers in the 20th century (post-war2). Yet, it is unfortunate that his work is not taken in account in the scial and political agenda in the capitalist world where the gap between humans remains growing. Instead, people are scapegoating each other etc.

@@nickpastorino5370 It seems that you could use some of what Lévinas tought when thinking of another human, you seem to have misunderstood his thinking. The obligation to care for each other is not a negative, it is the realisation that the other is unique and that we therefore are obliged to preserve this unique part of the human speices. The same goes for you.

@Himmel3775 Yes, you are right! The translation for this interview accompanied the video on the ina.fr site as a transcript (I just subtitled). Nevertheless, the translation for my other Levinas uploads is my work, so if there's any problem with them please let me know!

I’m envious of the French’s fortune that he is able to understand through mother tongue what he would like to tell us .He would often compose the conceptions by acrobaticlly combinig words familiar to life of the French.

Levinas and Sartre were contemporaries. Levinas' work on the "Need to escape" possibly compelled Sartre to write the play "No exit", where he compared the "other" with "hell" as in "hell is other people". Shortly after that, Levinas came with his own philosophy of the "other", where he not only regarded the other as a source of inspiration or alter ego, but even called the Other, the Absolute, when the Other cannot be reduced into an object of intentionality. The basic difference between them is ofcourse the fact that Sartre was an athiest while Levinas was a hardcore theist.
