Wildwood Guitars

4 жыл бұрын

It's that time of the year again -- NAMM 2020 - and Wildwood is here to bring you a vision of the decade to come!
Another annual tradition of the Wildwood team is to meet up with PRS himself - Paul Reed Smith - to catch quick banter, see what's new, and ultimately just riff about guitars. But whoa, this year we caught some magic. Greg fell in love with the PRS John Mayer Silver Sky, and Paul was happy to tell us a few of the stories behind its creation. Pure magic.

@@jamiemorgan4146 my understanding is that it is built to be close to an early 60's Strat in terms of tone and feel but without some of the limitations of a vintage instrument such as tuning stability, intonation and general roadworthiness. I don't think anyone imagines it is anything other than PRS's homage to a Strat.

Paul finally uncovered the secrets of pickup internal capacitance and carefully selecting pots. It's surprising how many players auto-swap pickups but never change the pots when pots and caps have as much impact on the tone as the pickups. Paul is finally a believer.

Just a choice. Doesn’t make one or the other better or right. Having choices is a great thing. The player can recognize a stellar instrument and choose that something else is what he wants. That’s all it says. I wish people wouldn’t invent conflict from it. There’s no conflict here, just opinions. I can see both sides. Perhaps that’s because I play and own more than one brand of guitar, and have done so for decades. There’s no need to choose just one.

@@passionplayer7 It's even simpler than that. Wildwood is a HUGE dealer of PRS, Gibson, and Fender, among others. Greg does most of the Wildwood vids, so the Wildwood customers need to see Greg play, and fawn over a couple PRS models. If I didn't have two killer old strats, I'd have a Silver Sky in flip-flop (rosewood though). And if I had a bunch more money, I'd buy one anyway.

It is so great to see a demo by these two guys. Both know very intimately the subtleties of the tones of classic guitars. Paul is able to point them out and Greg is able to play something which demonstrates them. Much more informative than a lot of the videos out there! And we're able to hear all three pickups from the Silver Sky here, with Paul pointing out the subtle ways they capture the sound of guitars built in the 1960s. Same goes for the demo of the McCarty toward the end of the video.

Tom Howland It depends if Greg sold some exclusivities to Reverend, Koch and Lace; and on the rapport Greg has with those companies. Burning bridges is never good. Man, for everyone on here hating on Paul, think for a second what it might be like if Gibson had someone at the helm that had this much passion about getting guitars 'right' and not being so concerned with doing 37 limited runs of guitars with stupid gimmicks at about 10 grand a pop, which still commonly have bad QC issues. We also complain about Gibson, don't we? But then hate on the guy that does produce irrefutably very high quality instruments and clearly loves what he does and what his company produces. I'm not so sure that it is arrogance that you're seeing and not just sort of a guitar nerd who never really developed the best social skills. To me, he's just a bit awkward and doesn't know how to be a regular guy sometimes, but aren't we all a little weird sometimes? Give the guy a pass, I say, and if a PRS guitar speaks to you, then who cares if the guy 'puts you off'. It's about making good music in the end anyway.

No, he’s not full of himself, and the brand is not tarnished. You’ve got other brands where they are way out of touch with their identity and originality. Paul Reed Smith knows who he is, and Paul Reed Smith guitars are genuine in what they offer. They are consistent AND constantly improving. That is more important than being an extrovert with personality. He designs guitars. He’s not a talk-show host. Many people cherish the fact that he is still at the helm of his company and covet the instruments he has created. There are probably others better suited for interviews that get endlessly scrutinized online, but they aren’t him. What other guitar manufacturer has their owner taking the time to be involved to this extent? It speaks volumes that greatly outweighs any lack of social skills or propriety that the man may have demonstrated.

1:13 for the uninitiated; you can't do most harmonics using a single coil neck pickup on a 22 fret guitar because the pickup sits underneath the node where the 24th fret or octave would be; the string literally doesn't move at that point and thus there is no movement for the pickup to react to. This is also explains a lot of why many guitarists prefer a 22 fret instrument; even with humbuckers, as one the coils is under that node reducing upper harmonic content and producing a warmer tone.

Great. GP from '82 and some bushy haired guy offering a new brand of guitars. Photos showing him carving a top. This was Paul Reed Smith. Santana, Al then on. '12 or so, its a Friday and a slow day at work. Said I was sick (was) but stopped by Gelbs in RWC on the way home. Walk in and ask "Why does that cat look like Paul Reed Smith?" Worker, "Because it is." This is like one in the afternoon. I was looking at some Fenders and he strolled by. being sick is why I didn't say Hi.

I do have the SE version.. I Havent had the chance to play the USA version at home yet. I dont care what guitars sound like in a store, I need to play them at home with my gear to know what they really sound like... I really wonder how much different the US version sounds.

Marketing apart... those pups stand pretty “high”. Most SRV type of players i know push them pups downwards, almost aligning them with the pickguard. Aged pups also tend to “downsize “ some of the high-end. Kinda like an old whiskey, you loose that initial roughness, leaving only a delayed burn at the end. And all 5 positions work well, all of them sound great... there might be a lot of marketing here, but... he did find something. That’s just my opinion.

Love Paul.... he has a ´beyond´intelligence.... which makes him special.... he is not from this world.... and that´s why he was able to bring alive the Jhon Meyer´s idea..... Silver Sky.... the ´beyond´intelligence enought to take the Febnder´s tradition, even further..... It implies, taking into account the tradition, validating what comes from ther past, but at the same time, adding NEW ELEMENTS.... for me.... it is the way to define EVOLUTION..... and that´s why not everybody can understand it....
