At the age of 24, David Hume Kennerly won the Pulitzer Prize for photos he took as a combat photographer in Vietnam during the Vietnam war AND for photos he took at the legendary 1971 Ali vs. Frasier fight at Madison Square Garden. At age 27, he was asked by President Gerald Ford to be the White House Photographer.
Mr. Kennerly has photographed every American president from LBJ through Biden. And now, at age 77, he's made an important statement about the courage that is necessary in 2024 to meet the urgency of this moment in America's history, when our democracy is under attack from within.
His recent article in the Atlantic, titled "The Danger of a Small Act of Cowardice", explains the stand he decided to take by resigning from the board of trustees of the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Foundation, as we discuss in episode 2 of our two-part conversation.
I am thrilled to present this 2-part, in-depth conversation with Mr. Kennerly.

I agree! I'm 72 and we never stop growing for the need of learning through others. My problem is retaining it. I have short term memory loss which is extremely aggravating and at times, I have to ask the same question a couple of times a day. It's due to lack of oxygen to my brain when I had congestive heart failure 4 years ago.

@@rhondawileman1466 Rhonda, I do not want to hurt your feelings, but I think you should know that "protecting our beautiful country" was not why were in Vietnam. We got involved in the fifties, supporting our ally France as Vietnam was struggling to throw off French colonial rule. When the French accepted defeat, the US took over the fight against the 'Red Menace' (tyvm Senator McCarthy). We stayed far too long and lost far too many lives on both sides to achieve nothing in particular. Vietnam today is a peaceful socialist country, an outcome that could have been achieved decades earlier by our staying TF out of it. Why did we continue to fight? Look up 'sunk cost fallacy'. I do not blame those who, like the OP, did the duty they were obliged to do, but there is honor in resisting such a useless - and harmful - exercise as well. Our country and way of life were never in danger then. Today, we ignore at our peril the threat from inside the house. When will we learn?

The man who set my father's life going in the right direction was George Washington Carver. He spoke when my father graduated from 8th grade, telling the students to get as much education as possible. My grandfather only had an 8th grade education, so my dad received no encouragement from him.

I just want to say I really appreciate your approach to covering the Trump trials by sticking to the facts and providing a reasonable summary analysis, generally once daily. I follow you and two other legal/political analysis podcasters. The two others post rather frequently (one almost hourly), repeat a lot, interject opinion, get significantly more political, etc, and while I do appreciate their content, I have to skip a lot of their content and ads to get to their main point. Keep up the great work.

It's funny to hear this. My professor told me point blank, after the Macroeconomics class, you're on permanent vacation! With a scold. Wandering off, I pondered the meaning of life. [A question in my mind.] I had to open the base theatre, the first release of Heavy Metal was showing. (What on earth did that mean, Football and beers.) Marines at the show were going crazy. Peering through the peep up in the film booth, I thought OK this is not the cartoon for kids. Animations took on a whole new world.
