@@PassionforSound I had read (heard?) that Jason worked on it for over a year before actually releasing it. I wonder, honestly, if this was the first time he got the idea!! Or, if that discussion even helped him cement actually trying it. Needless to say, I am ecstatic he *did* make it! While it throws off a lot of heat, the payoff is worth it IMO. A big part of the sound of all tube power amps is the output transformer. Part of why Dynaco ST-70's could sound so good is they had very good trannies. And yes, tube amps can sound very neutral as opposed to warm and lush. Audio Research for example.
@PassionforSound
@PassionforSound 10 ай бұрын
Absolutely! I swapped out the output transformers in my Elekit TU-8200R and the difference was dramatic. It's a major part of the signal path, after all. I also agree that tubes are not all thick and warm. There's as much range with tubes (or more) that with solid state from rich to lean and crisp.

This series has been fantastic. Kudos! I am very attracted to Jason's no bs approach, though I know not everyone is. Maybe I am biased by the fact that I own numerous pieces of Schiit, but I own them because I like how they sound and think they are excellent value. I even like the Jot (lol). While they are good marketers, Ime they are better engineers. But then I ultimately only care about sound, reliability, and value, and don't care about measurements except on the most gross level. This series resulted in me subscribing to your channel. Cheers.

I know this was two yeas ago, but I really want to know if Jason was drinking Belgian Trappist beer. Judging by the particular glass and the color and clarity of the beer, by best guess is Belgian Trappist. FYI, Trappist is not necessarily a specific brand. Trappist beer is an open-yeast method of brewing in Belgium with pedigree that goes back to the Belgian Trappist Monks who started the brewing tradition. Oh, yea, this was about audio! It's pretty clear, as a contrast to the brew, that multibit is the preferred DAC.

Great interview! If possible, and if you haven’t recorded already, please consider comparing Modius + Asgard 3 stack vs the multibit dac card in the Asgard 3. I’m agonizing a bit since the prices are the same (minus cables) but potential tradeoffs seem significant!
@PassionforSound
@PassionforSound 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jordan, I'd love to do that comparison, but I can't afford to buy all the different gear people would like me to compare and there's only so much loan equipment I can ask manufacturers / retailers to provide. Personally, I would buy the Modius because (A) it's excellent and (B) it has balanced out in case you change your amp in the future and (C) you can upgrade either the amp or the DAC without having to find replacements for both.
@jordanfish
@jordanfish 3 жыл бұрын
@@PassionforSound Sounds good, thanks for the response! I totally understand; I think I had the mistaken impression that you had the Multibit Asgard 3 on hand already. Quick q on the modius, will I be able to go directly from its XLR out to powered monitors, with just a passive volume control box? This would be super helpful as I’d be able to control headphones and monitors independently but also simultaneously.
@PassionforSound
@PassionforSound 3 жыл бұрын
No problems. I think you should be able to hook it up that way with your monitors. So long as the Modius is seeing a high impedance load it should be fine. (Both the volume control and monitors should be high impedance)

Just hooked onto this series, excellent thanks for these, just about to listen (well after work) to the Chord interview. I am running my first little stack although the dac and amp are actually seperated from each other, so it's modest but I like it, I have a topping e30 DAC USB Connected to my Macbook Pro as I wanted DAC stage to be fairly neutral. I then have 2 amps the Zen Can and the xduoo xp05 I think it's called the 2 tube hybrid. I am thinking of my next or additional stack and looking at topping 30 pros or a Jotuheim 2 with a D30 Pro, I have watched a lot of reviews and I have got so confused I've parked the whole project to be honest. What I wanted was a natural sounding setup with my headphones and maybe a little eq doing the end of train duty for sound assuming I can power they sufficiently. What I seem to have is super clean but sterile according to some topping devices on side or Schitt Jot 2 which are overly warm and enriched again according to some. My head has started hurting and I am a very technical guy in my day job but subjective to measurement based reviews and some of the comments on ASR etc have left me no wiser. I think I need to just be locked in an aladins cave or equipment for a week and just decide what the heck I actually enjoy 😁
@PassionforSound
@PassionforSound 3 жыл бұрын
Glad you like the interviews! I totally get what you mean about the overload of options and variables. The best advice I can give you (short of your Aladdin's cave idea to demo everything) is to find reviewers who's tastes fairly consistently match or contradict your own. You can then trust their recommendations to either be good for you or the opposite.

@PassionforSound
@PassionforSound 3 жыл бұрын
I haven't tried the Val 2 yet, but I'd recommend the Bifrost 2 in any situation as it's a great DAC. I hear some say it's a warm DAC, but I disagree. I think the 3D presentation means that the sound isn't all pushed forward and so it sounds less detailed/analytical/bright when it is actually presenting all the same details and clarity, but with what I believe to be a more correct sense of soundstage depth.

They did talk about a music processor they're working on. One of the big things was getting the USB output working which I think they've done now (I went back and read all the posts by Mike on the head-fi forums). And what type of amp would you recommend to pair with Bifrost2? I currently own a schiit Ragnarok, how will this two work as a pair? Really love your reviews, thank you very much.

Sure will. I actually recorded the review today for release in a couple of weeks. In short, it's great and I prefer it to the ADI-2. It would pair wonderfully with Rag I expect.

I think it's such a relatively small market still and shows no sign of growing at this time so unlikely I'm afraid ☹️

Yeah I don't have a single DSD song I would love if it wasn't dsd. So in that regard the best sounding 16 bit 44,1 kHz would be the best dac but it's so smooth and open.

No, my personal preference is just that. But, measurements are also incomplete because they only measure sine waves. Most people I know listen to music... 😉

There are some amps that measure great but don't sound as good as their specs would indicate, and amps that don't measure so well, yet sound great. The deduction is that we haven't discovered all the possible measurements yet.

Spot on. Rob Watts touched on this in my interview with him too. We actually don't understand yet some of the brain works when perceiving audio. If we don't understand something, we can't measure it.

Next time you interview a DAC designer, please ask why they all refuse to build in a simple passive volume control. Getting rid of a preamp is a big space and money savings. Like most people these days, I only use one input going to the preamp, my DAC.
@PassionforSound
@PassionforSound 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Richard, I'll see what I can do, but I think there's a reason that they don't do this already. The moment you add a passive volume control, you're adding complexity to the signal path and degrading the sound quality (even with very good volume controls).

@@PassionforSound, OK thanks. I do connect my Holo Audio Spring DAC to a very expensive passive transformer volume control with great results. The Auralic Aries does allow me, if I wanted, to control the volume digitally. But I chose not to because a digital volume control throws away bits and because I’m always afraid of accidentally touching full volume. I much prefer an actual physical volume control. Like many others, I no longer use any analog. DACs have switching digital input capabilities, why not volume.

The fact that they don't makes me think there's a reason, but I'm only hypothesizing with my earlier comment. A really good preamp can probably do a much better job of maintaining signal quality than a simple volume pot. There may also be output impedances to take into account. DACs and amps/pre-amps should have high output and input impedances respectively. Not sure what a volume control would do to this.

100 people tasted and ranked 10 fruit jams, everyone finished in under 30 minutes. When told to explain why they ranked each jam they way they did, none finished in less than 2 hours and all the rankings changed. Not a good idea to analyze likes and dislikes, trust your gut

I agree that trusting our gut is the right choice. I think the Schiit approach is not trying to prove anything though (other than how popular certain similar products are)

$699 + tax + shipping is what Schiit calls an "affordable DAC"
@PassionforSound

When considered against the competition it is. Schiit also actively encourage people to not spend too much on gear. Jason is the first person to recommend buying a Modi and Magni and calling it a day.

@@PassionforSound Affordable and high-end, though? That's just nonsense. Affordable is the Modi 3, non-MB, or Modius, or D10s. I got my BF2 finally. So far I like how Mojo sounds better, but BF2 does make Starsea sound better, at least. I will probably keep both, since they sound different(and great). But after this I definitely want to get a Hugo 2 :) I hear more warmth and smoothness and engagement with Mojo, and more dynamic range and detail with BF2.

You've summed up the Chord vs Schiit MB sound perfectly and it's why I'd still give the slight edge to Qutest/Hugo 2 over the Bifrost 2.

Makes you think why doesn’t Schiit release a smooth sounding version of the bifrost? Then they would basically have everything covered for most people.
@PassionforSound
@PassionforSound Жыл бұрын
The Bifrost 2 is often considered to be too smooth for some people and the new 2/64 version has actually added some texture and air so I think they've kind of now got all options covered. There's NOS mode now too
