Gen. Stanley Mathenge Mirugi was one the top military leaders of the Mau Mau, the Kenya Land Freedom Army. In this riveting interview with Prof Macharia Munene, his wife tells how Mathenge was personally recruited by Jomo Kenyatta, Mbiyu Koinange and Bildad Kaggia to lead the fighters, which collaborates a claim we have heard so many times from the veterans we have interviewed. Mrs Mathenge was a freedom fighter in her own right and she narrates her experience with candour, humour and detail. Her interview also reveals important details about Kikuyu culture. We don't have too long with most of these legends around. And video is the best way of documenting their oral history. It beats written history a thousand times. These videos will be a treasure trove in years to come.
