I’ve heard that following up comes across as desperate, and only ensures that they won’t hire YOU. I’ve used both approaches, follow-up and no follow-up, and honestly there seems to be zero correlation in terms of getting hired. In fact, my experience has been that a company KNEW they were going to hire me, or not hire me before I ever even interviewed! While, I would now consider a follow-up email, I’m not doing a project. Good lord, I have three degrees and am working on a second certification. I’ve invested close to 100K in my education and career development. If they’re not already convinced of the value I bring, then yeah, I’m probably not the right fit. Besides, it’s really about who you know, not what you know.

NOOOO don't follow up every 5 days. some companies (especially large ones) take 4-6 weeks to interview all candidates. Contacting them every 5 days is annoying and obnoxious. Instead, after finishing your interview, kindly thank them for the interview and simply ask them "When should I expect to hear back from you?". my interviewer said '4 weeks' so I contacted them after 4 weeks and they said give us 2 weeks and we'll get back to you, I'm still waiting.

This is 50 shades of wrong the idea u give people looking for a job. Anytime that u will act like a beggar you will loose your shot with a company. If they truly want you then you will get answer offer in 7 days or less. I did quite a bunch of interviews in my time and had no issue getting offers back after few days. You should never put your hopes too high with single employer or u will come as desperate. best answer for " we still looking" question would be telling them that u also got other interviews and u look for answer by end of week or something close to it. By doing that u tell them that you will loose interest real soon. Lastly, you are one of a bunch of others trying to get position but if you have intention of waiting by the phone for them to call then u can enjoy welfare checks etc. Employers, recruiters will call u at evening after hours even if they want u. Do not think that they care for u, they want you working for them just to make money. Have some basic dignity. Dont waste their time and do not let them waste yours.

It IS best to send a follow-up email a days later (typically 2-3 days) thanking them for the interview and asking about next steps. Beyond that, you are correct in your assessment that too many follow-ups looks desperate and generally hurts your chances.
@sl0523
@sl0523 2 жыл бұрын
It's true, most of the companies will get back to you in less than 7 natural days or 5 business days, unless it's a huge corp, then expect 2 weeks of turn-around time. But no matter how much you wanna get into a certain company, you should only send one followup email after a week of your interview if you haven't heard back from them. If you didn't get a response or the reply is still wishy-washy, then just assume that they don't really want you but don't have the courage to tell you directly and that you should move on.

So not to give any identifying details, but in my position I'm responsible for interviewing and hiring. When I tell someone "we are still interviewing other candidates" it's because as an EOO, we are legally required to interview at least 3 candidates before we offer someone a position. Now if there are multiple positions open, for example 2 of the same position and 2 candidates apply for position 1 and a different candidate applies for position 2, it's still 3 candidates and we can make an offer after all 3 are interviewed. So yeah, I can't speak for other companies but I know for me personally, I tell candidates I'm still interview because...well... I still legally have to do more interviews.

It's really easy to get into the mindset that job interviews are these hurdles you have to jump past to get the employer to hire you, but it's really not a healthy or productive way to think. You really make yourself vulnerable to scams, toxic work environments, and various other nasty situations. Just like how employers pick and choose who they hire, you should really pick and choose who you'll work for especially since you'll be spending more time with them than with your own family.

@@therealdonut45 In my experience, if I'm offered the job, it's usually right at the end of the interview. HR professionals know exactly what they are looking for, and when they find the right person, they won't waste time. Unfortunately, this also means that they sometimes lead people on by "promising" to reach out to you soon in regards to the decision. That decision was already made. If they tell you they are still "interviewing" others, it just means you're no longer on their radar and you can expect their rejection email in the next week or so. Professionals who know their own value don’t follow up every week like a spammer sending emails. 2) sending emails that someone else might offer you job sounds like you value their company over others or you don’t expect to get offer better than theirs 3) Sharing value project or other such things could be good for someone trying for first job or maybe changing industry…they will know your capabilities in the interview itself…there is no need to waste your time making projects for them…it will just show you’re desperate for their approval

Thank you for your interest in!! ‘’ I followed up 3 times and never respond or call back after interview , today is August 28, I went interview to my dream job at August 1. Today, I got this email. I had one with a company, they spent almost 1.5K on me for my travel expenses after a preliminary interview. I did a technical seminar for 30 minutes which I was able to answer all their questions because it was my research work, had 3 sets of interview with different folks which I performed well in all atleast in my own opinion. They introduced to all the team i would be working with and gave me a tour of the site. I thought I would get the Job 100% for my performance but lo and behold, I was sent a rejection letter that my qualification does not fully satisfy what they are looking for. That was really crazy for me but we move

Or my other favorite line “we’ll put your application on file & we’ll let you know” that means your application is going straight into the trash/shredder. It’s like in construction when they want to let someone go without firing them they’ll do this “hey John we’ve got your number right?” “Yes” “ok sweet mate we’ll give you a call when something comes up”

I had this happen to me, as I got a push from an employee from inside the company as I thought wouldn't get a call, because of the dates off my resume shows my age. Which got interrupted many times by phone calls. I got the " we'll keep your application on file."...

Show your understanding; filling a position is a taxing experience. Thank them for keeping you in consideration, mildly re-iterate why you'd be an excellent fit for the job, and let them know you look forward to hearing from them soon. THEN KEEP LOOKING. Never forget that you are also interviewing your prospective employers as well during this process to find a company that not only offers a good salary, but also, a company with a good culture and climate. No one wants to work in a hell hole! Don't be desperate and accept the first job you're offered if it's not a good fit, and definitely, don't accept a job that might be "just okay" and lock yourself out of an opportunity that might be life-changing.

I think the ones who benefit from this are the minority of cases, but it can be worth a try. However, many companies will simply get annoyed if you keep badgering them every few days rather than waiting patiently for the stated deadline - what does that tell them about you as a candidate if you can't follow procedure? In reality, even if you're chasing them after their outcome deadline, they still tell you to wait (especially with how big a backlog they now have), so pestering them won't get you any bonus points. Also, most companies will find the attitude 'I'm almost off the market, so get me quick' a bit pushy and offputting, unless you are such a good candidate that they'd have already chosen you. Again, what does it tell them about your character, unless the position itself requires a salesperson or a highly-driven individual?
@timisa58
@timisa58 2 жыл бұрын
Another possibility that is not mentioned is that they don't want you to know that they are desperate in any way. Or not having found but a few qualified candidates, they don't want to show their weaker hand in the process. Be careful about the value validation project. Make sure it is something that is relatively innocuous so that the company does not take your ideas for their own use.

I've rejected offers from dodgy companies many times. I've also told them that based on the interview I'm no longer interested. Matter-of-fact I've called before the interview to tell them that having done research on their company I no longer want to even interview. You hold as much power as they do. The single factor that makes them think otherwise is the number of applicants that put up with crap. If everyone refused to play games no games would get played. Unfortunately, that's not going to happen so you have to decide how it's going to work for you.

In the real world you have the job before the interview because of your referral. The interview and job posting are just checking off boxes. I say if you get an interview without a referral interview anyway. You probably will not get that position. However if you interview well you are set up to get a future position that will be posted to check off boxes but in reality you will get the job. Think the long game. Corporations are just like a dysfunctional family and they put the fun in dysfunctional. I really have seen a lot of weird stuff in Corporate America. They say we have to follow policy and do this or that. No. In reality they do whatever the hell they want to do. Pay rate, moving packages, bonuses etc. There you go. You have the truth so run with it.

There was a place I went to in March when they said they were going to give someone a part time job even before they went to interview and I thought that's not fair and it put me off the place so I was glad I wasn't offered that job! The interview wasn't a waste as I learned that isn't a place for me! The only time experiences are wasted is when nothing is learned from them. I love videos like this because they really confirm that I'm headed in the right direction. I have worked, most of the time I do work and am looking right now. Fortunately I have very low overhead. I have very little debt, some savings and investments. I don't have kids or a car payment. Most of the jobs I have had have really sucked and none of them were making me any real money. I can do everything from driving a forklift to the monthly and yearly accounting closings. I'm at a point where I'm really not emotionally invested in my "career" or job and I can find plenty of things to do when not working. In this kind of situation I might say "Glad to hear it, that means other people want to work here. What's the best way for me to follow up if I'm still available?" Any response they give to this will save me time. Precious, precious, fast moving time.

True. Put yourself in the driver's seat. Even if you really need a job, it's not a good idea to let the employer know that, as they will use it to "motivate" you once hired. Always have more than one income stream, be as debt free as possible and never give employers or coworkers too much personal insight into your private life. RUN from those "family" type companies, as you will be expected to give way more than you receive and be pressured into situations you'd rather not take part in.

I would simply just move on, unless that company is one of the biggest names in the industry I'm seeking or I live in a small town where there're not so many job opportunities to begin with, or even worse, this is the only interview I have had recently. Also keep that in mind that a experienced, professional and respectful recruiter or hiring manager would never say "we're still interviewing other candidates" in front of your face to begin with. Just like dating, you should never tell a person on the first or second date that you're also seeing other people.

If a recruiter asks you about salary expectations during the first interview - they are placing emphasis on cost vs. value-add talent, gauging whether salary correlates with the experience candidate claims they have, recognize the job title they are using in advertisement is not aligned with the actual job role - so screening, and/or.....unfortunately, have similar experienced candidates and likely looking for the least expensive choice. Never give a recruiter a salary expectation until the employer shows true interest in you. There are too many additional variables to consider when it comes to total compensation. I wouldn't approach the subject until third/fourth interview - meeting with leadership when you have a good sense they are serious about possibly selecting you.
@sl0523

I'd prefer to discuss salary at the first interview session, because I just don't wanna go through a second and then a third interview to realize their budget doesn't match my expectations. I mean I just don't wanna waste my time. But when I was asked my salary expectations by the interviewers, I'd always say I would like to know their budget for the role first. Because what if their budget is way above my expectations.

It's an intimidation tactic. If you're desperate for a job, they will lowball you and then, knowing how badly you need the job, take advantage of the situation. Think about it: why do you get more than one bid on a home project? Look at several dealers when buying a car? Shop the sales at different stores? You want the most for the least, right? Who's going to work overtime for the lowest pay rate? The guy with a family, debt, no options. Don't be that guy or if you ARE, don't let them KNOW it.

Maybe it depends on the industry and the company, but my gut feeling is that every 5 days seems a bit desperate and aggressive. I’m applying now for an internal position within my company (a large, global bank) and if I did that, I am certain it would piss off the hiring manager. My company takes weeks, sometimes months to get to the offer stage because of the various levels of approval involved. I think a thoughtful, well crafted meaningful thank you email (to each and every person who you interviewed with) immediately after the interview demonstrating passion and confirming interest in the role is the best thing to do and leaves them with a good impression. Then, let the process happen and let the cards fall where they may. In the meantime, keep up the job search until you have an offer in hand and are ready to accept.

While I don't always send an email after the interview, if they say the next round is in 2 weeks, I ALWAYS reach out if I have not heard anything by then. Sometimes they do not reach out to any applicants until they have filled the role. It also reminds the recruiter who you are in a month's worth of interviews, and bumps you up a level from peers who did not reach out. In one case, the recruiter had failed to hand me over to the next level by accident. If I had not reached out, I would not have got the job I ended up in for 2 years

Follow up makes no sense ..cuz if the hiring manager is interested in your profile and considering you after interviewing you..they'd surely contact you ...but on the contrary of they have not qualified you for further rounds it won't change their decision even if you promptly folloup with them for an update ( hoping it to be positive) ..so not following up can work ..cuz would show you are not desperate and not under any personal pressure to get this job.. sometimes employers may play the mind game ...holding on to the reslt for little long to check whihc one from their shortlisted candidate is desperate or restless so that they can hire them for a possible lower number in the slasry range they have for that position...so just hold on for a week ...if you still don't hear from then..time to forget them /stop expecting to hear from them and move on

Job search can be an arduous and painful process. The only way to avoid the humiliating experience is to become your own boss by starting a consulting company or a business. The other way to reduce going through the humiliating experience of job search is by minimizing the number of years you NEED to work by acquiring skills which are high paying and are in high demand. Once you start working in high paying jobs, start living substantially below your means and start saving and investing so that you can retire before you turn 50.

Nope, they need to "dazzle" me as well. Desperation isn't a "quality" I possess, and never will. You'll never be respected in that workplace, acting like that just to get hired lol.

When I hear these excuses from interviewers or even the experience hiring crap, what I really hear is, "Yeah..... we're to incompetent and lazy to do our jobs. Hell!! We don't even know what the job entails or anything about our products and services. Training?! Nah, I'm to lazy for that and don't even know to teach and really don't want to!!" Then they regret it afterwards or the ones that feel the REAL pain and suffering are the ones at the lower levels as they have to put up with the incompetence, abuse, and stupidity of the "most qualified". I've seen it 100's of times...

Job hunting is so exhausting. I have been applying for jobs in education. They are so disconnected and seemingly automated where there is no human interaction until the actual interview process. Can you help with that?

im sure for some jobs this is good advice, as a Tech Ive found If I havent been called in a few days I move on, generally Ive been hired within two to three days. I see it as their loss, not mine.
