The Traveller Movement recently went to Appleby Horse fair to speak to Billy Welch the Shera Rom - or ‘Head Gypsy’ who has been helping to organise the fair or decades.
In this candid interview Billy Welch spoke about his involvement in the fair, how Travellers and Gypsies who attend the fair are viewed and the importance of voting.

Mr Billy Welch is the write man to represent Gypsies and Travellers in the community we live Billy Welch is switched on to how people look at Gypsies and Travellers let people keep on shuting the doors and keep discriminating we will not change for no one we are what we are and believe in spiritual things and can see through people . I know a lot of people do not like to hear the truth yes we are miss trust fall of others because we know what people really think of us as Gypsies and Travellers but I will not preach to the public or people because they have got their own private thoughts about Gypsies and Travellers. I will Keep fighting the horrible Bill witch the government passed in 2022 thank you very best wishes to you all from Mr Ben Golby 👌 👍

💯% right about the voting. You may not want preferential treatment but if you come together as a larger community and vote you’ll get it. And fair play to you.

The Gypsy and Traveller communities can make a change together, if they all take part in the democratic system. It will incentivise politicians to listen to their voices.

Shame he didn't sort out the bastards who killed the 3 horses before they had to be Put down. I never understand that side of the community yiu have the best horses in the world and arguably the strongest community BUT STILL many are continuing abusing horses and animals which makes no sense to your pockets no sense to your family and no sense to your word atall

They weren't waiting to be put to sleep theee wasn't anything wrong with them before Appleby , they were young ponies who had to be Put down because of the ejits running them up n down for hours on end until they collapsed THATS WHAT I'M FUCKING ANGRY ABOUT people not saying anything to the little idiots who would do that to a horse not even just one but 3, that's bought nothing but shame to all involved you should be equally angry because things like that effect you and your reputation aswell mark my words

If you stood up for your animals and taught your children to respect all animals things like this wouldn't happen, it may not have been you directly involved but mark my words every single family name will be tarnished because of those idiots who killed those ponies. Its time to do the right thing by your own heritage and protect your horses not stand by and ignore what idiots are doing because it will effect you down the line. Poor ponies 3 of them dead because no one told the kids to stop driving them all night SHAME to all the community

True also, there is no such thing as traveller Gypsy. They are white Travelers trying to live like us ROMA, which most of you call us the slur GYPSY and we hate it, while the White travelers embrace it and even call themselves Gypsy because they never lived thought the discrimination we did so it don't hurt them like us.

Just a bit concerned about the accent of the guy with the microphone. He is either from there or is putting on an Indian accent from somewhere like Delhi. Billy Welch is a good spokesperson for the trials and tribulations.

The fair is open to anyone, but is historically popular with Romani Gypsy and Irish Traveller communities.

@@travellermovement8032 I ask many people over the years but everyone seems to be fearful an say it’s not worth the trouble. I may self have never in life had a run in with any member of the travelling community, I have more so house dwelling people.
