Just bought a butterscotch Squier CV....what a guitar! I wanted a tele without paying $2g (Cdn $)...after playing guitar for almost 40 years, never thought I would ever own a Squier, but these CV’s are excellent

True story, mate. I had the butterscotch CV50 Tele and it was killer. Unfortunately, the pine body on mine was almost as heavy as my mate's Les Paul. I couldn't carry it comfortably for a whole gig and had to sell it on. Shame - lovely axe. I now have a Fender Payer Jaguar. Another great guitar, but the MIM Fenders are no better than the Squier CVs. They're still excellent, but whereas a Squier CV will come out of the box with a perfect fret job, a lot of the Fender MIM guitars will need a dress and polish before they play as well as the Squier. Can't go wrong with Squier CV or Fender MIM/Player. Great value.

Hi Shane ! Greetings from Akron , Ohio USA ! I have been a subscriber for years , love your videos . So well made and informative .I agree with all your ideas on the faux Teles . I owned a China made Classic Vibe Tele Custom . Loved it , so well made . I traded it off because the neck was a little too thin for me . I should have kept it and bought a bigger neck for it , I miss it still and it was that good ! Kudos to Tokais . I have owned a couple and am always amazed at the build quality . I even had a nylon string Tokai Classical that was out of sight ! I have been playing since 1963 ( 71 years old ) , but I still get excited about guitars , still my mouth waters and I stare at guitars at the shops that I cannot afford . All these years , and all the gigs , and all the guitars I have owned and still own , I still have a burning passion for guitars

As all Squier guitars are, it's really about the quality control. The reason I say this is because I have a 2018 Squier Affinity Tele and it plays and sounds wonderful. The amount of compliments I've received from it are far more than I expected. I may have got the luck of the draw with smooth frets, but with a final setup, it was ready to go and is my go to guitar.

Just got a G&L Fullerton Deluxe ASAT Classic. My favorite Tele by far. I've owned a '68, '76, an MIM (2006), and a MIM Classic 50s. I rate the ASAT at the top (by a long distance) followed by the 50's classic, then the '68. For the 06 MIM, I put really nice and well known US bridge pickup, and I just can't remember which one and I no longer have the guitar. Put a Fender Fat 50s Strat pickup in the neck. Nothing helped. The ASAT is so well rounded. With regular Teles, I love the spank, but always roll back the tone for the bridge, but then have to open back up for the neck. The 50s are extra bright, which is period correct and too bright for some. I don't need to roll off the highs on the ASAT, but when I do, the neck pickup still cuts through and does not suffer from muddiness. I adjusted the polepieces per a Darrell Braun, video. Fretwork, neck, and wire size are perfect for me. Oh, I LOVE the belly contour.

I've found the Mexican Tele not to have that twang I'm looking for. The Fenders didn't until I got up into the American Series and it was good plus the action is to die for. Totally easy to play. For a fourth of the cost the G&L captures the expensive Fender sound which makes sense because Leo Fender built the G&L company. Great informative video!

I just ordered one of their 3-single -coil ''Nashville Tele'' type guitars, mostly because Dr. Groovey(scott grove) did a review on one, and liked it. If it's good enough for him, it's good enough for me. I'm a big fan of his, because he's not a guitar snob, though he owns some of the best guitars around,, and he could play a mop handle with a string on it and still sound great. Plus, he's funny as hell!

Gotta love the cheap Fender Squier models.. I got my lefty affinity Tele for $127 shipped, b-stock. I replaced pretty much everything except the bridge/saddles. CTS pots, Switchcraft output jack and 3 way switch, orange drop caps, Fender Tex Mex pickups in the bridge and neck, Tusq nut, replaced the plastic output jack plate with a metal one, and last but not least, I added Gotoh ivory locking tuners. Oh and I also sanded the sticky finish off the back of the neck and did the frets a bit. The guitar is still cheap, but it plays the best out of all my guitars, and sounds great. My favorite upgrade was honestly either the pickups or the Tusq nut. Both most important and recommended IMO.. The factory tuners actually kept in tune pretty good, and the electronics weren't that bad from the factory.

Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned pro, all of the guitars you listed here would be a great alternative to a Fender. I've been playing Tele Player Mexican model for a couple of years. In that time I've upgraded to locking tunners and replaced the small neck pickup to a humbucker Seymour Duncan SH-2N. I've also replaced the bridge pickup to a Fender "noiseless". Currently the guitar is a beast... and can handle anything from mellow jazz riffs to distorted metal. Of the guitars that I have (Gibson Les Paul Faded, Fender Player Stratocaster, Epiphone Les Paul and the Tele).... the Tele is my most versatile, most playable and hence favorite guitar. Greatings from Prague

Great Video - Earlier this year I acquired a 2012 MIM Arctic White/Maple Fretboard Tele... New old stock. It was still sealed in the Fender box. If you take the fragile state of small local Music Stores, and then combine that sad story with the Covid-19 pandemic, you get a lot of stores going under. There was a wonderful such shop near where I live which I have frequented for years. The owner and I had become good friends (in a business way). I got a call from him in March asking me with help closing down the store (very sad), pricing things out, and even acting as a salesman. While going through some boxes up in the rafters I came across one that looked like it had never been opened, and had the weight of a guitar in it. He did not even know he had it and we'd already sold every other guitar in the shop. I offered to post it on Reverb or eBay for him but he just asked me if I had any interest in it. If so it was mine for free if I wanted it. He was a broken man by now, I dug around in my secret cash I keep in my car that my wife does not know about and put together $198.00. I said I'd be thrilled to take the Tele but not for free. I stuffed the cash in his hand and took it home when we locked the doors that night. Back in 2012 the MIM Teles were (and some famous players agree) are still as good or better than the USA models. Since acquiring the Tele I have swapped out: the pickguard from white to cobalt blue, the ceramic single coils for Fender Tex-Mex Alnico 5 P'ups, I upgraded to EVH high friction Tone and low friction Volume pots, Oak Grigsby 3 way switch, a Switchcraft Output Jack, a .047uf Orange Drop Cap and classic cloth covered wire. The guitar setup perfectly and is my all time favorite Tele that I have ever owned. All new, all first class and all for less than $275.00!

God, I sold a G&L ASAT Classic Semi-Hollow that had some of the clearest sounding pickups I've ever personally owned like 10 years ago and this video just reminded me of how much I still regret that decision. Pretty sure I sold it for around $250 or so back then, probably have to spend around $400-500 to get that version again since it doesn't seem to have been in production for very long. Sill might pick it up again though, it's definitely worth the (slightly inflated) price of admission.

Started my Tele journey with an $100 Aldi job. After a set up it played ok and sounded fine for what it was. Next was a 2005 Tele Squire Standard which is a great guitar and comparable to the Classic Vibe. Next up was the Artist TC59 with “humbuckers” which sounds nothing like a Tele and weighs a “metric Tonee”. Finally I bought a US Tele Standard. Still have all of them but no doubt the US Tele is the way to go if you have the money..👍🇦🇺

I have 3 Mexican Fender Telecasters. A Mexican Standard from the 1990's (with an after market Seymour Duncan Hot Rail in the bridge), a Fender FSR Telecaster (from Guitar Center) that has exceptional standard Mexican single coil PUP's that sound excellent and are less noisy than most of my humbucker equipped guitars, and a Fender Classic Player Baja Telecaster. The Baja Tele is made from custom shop parts, and assembled in Mexico. The Baja Tele is $800.00 new, and sounds & plays like a guitar 3 times it's price. The Custom Shop Broadcaster bridge PUP, and Custom Shop Twisted Tele neck PUP, give this guitar an outstanding voice! The additional switching options lets you place the neck and bridge pickups in series, or parallel configurations. The series configuration makes it sound fatter, heavier and louder like a good humbucker! I can really drive any of my tube amps over the top just plugged straight into the amp without any pedals in the signal chain. If you want heavy metal tone; you can use a booster pedal, or an overdrive pedal, or a good distortion (or fuzz) pedal to drive the front of the amp harder and right into heavy metal. Try it, it will surprise you! I love all of my Tele's but the Baja Tele is the most versatile and it will play any genre you choose. I have a Les Paul, an SG, a PRS and a Godin 5th Ave. Kingpin with a P90 in the neck position; so I can tell you what the Baja will do from direct comparison. Tele's are getting more and more popular with all kinds of players. The Alt Rock scene of the 90's showed Tele's being used for all kinds of musical styles. They ain't just for Country Music anymore! Keith Richards has been using one since the 1960's! The American Standard Telecaster is expensive $$, but you can still get a brand new Mexican Standard Telecaster for ~ $550.00. If you can find them, used Tele's can be found in the sub - $500.00 range. Fender Japan also offers a Richie Kotzen Tele, an outstanding guitar, for $1500.00 factory new. Look up the official video of this Tele on KZfaq. You just might be impressed. When I first saw this video, I thought that there was no way that guitar was going to stay in the $1500.00 range for long; but I was wrong... I am happy to say! This Tele is a true custom and it is unlike most of the Tele's you have ever seen. Give it a look and listen. You just might be glad that you did!

I'm a Tele fanatic. One of my favorites is a Squier bullet Tele (seafoam green). Maybe I'm lucky, but got a great one. The main reason I picked it over the Affinity was the string-thru body, and the neck is slightly wider. I really like the unfinished neck. I also have a Squier classic vibe 50s tele, and a Glen Burton tele (talk about obscure!). Anyway, all i did to the bullet was lower the saddles a bit and re-intonate. GREAT guitar for $129 USD, as i caught it on sale. Would love an American Standard tele, but I'm wandering is the price difference worth it, when i love the guitars i already have?

To begin, I want to say that I am not against getting an MIA tele because I own a Fender American Special Telecaster from 2017. To answer your question, I recommend you put the $1000+ it costs to buy an MIA tele toward new pickups, bridge, pots, tone and volume knobs, tuners, nut, saddles, pickguard if you want to customize it, and maybe even a new neck. From my point of view, pickups can be upgraded and tonewood is less than 5% of the guitar sound, but an uncomfortable neck is something I cannot get over. But if you enjoy the neck you have now it would only cost about $5 to sand off the Squier logo and get a Fender decal if you are going for the name brand look (which is no shame. I think it makes the player more proud and create a stronger desire to play the instrument). And more than likely no one would question you or be able to tell the difference between your Squier with a Fender logo that sounds awesome and a stock Fender that sounds awesome without a close examination, but at that point who really cares? Moral of the story: Yes, MIA guitars are better in almost every way, but the differences are not something that cannot be achieved by upgrading a lower end guitar. I hope that helps, feel free to reply with any questions you have, I will keep an eye out for your reply!

NO FRET WORK NEEDED ACTION GOOD AND I Did have to make a small adjustment to the intonation and that was it! The SOUND!! from those Duncan's makes this guitar a BEAST!! Granted the neck PU does not sound like the traditional Tele, because it was not meant to but it still has plenty glass I ALSO LOVE THE 10.5 TO 16 NECK RADIUS. I am ISO another T style guitar with the single coils for the traditional Tele sound BUT THIS MK WILL NOT GO ANYWHERE!!

I need up buying three BreezySounds $249 each w/hard case, whilst my mate bought four SpringySounds… The other sales staff were buying them at retail, it was nuts, they were sold out in a few days, 30 guitars, I think, including the infamous Love Rock Les Paul… along story short, I have one Tele left, the best of the three, and it’s even my main gig guitar all these years, absolutely superb beast, everyone loves it… Leaves American Télés for dead

I think one of the best 'tele' or 'strat' guitars I've ever played were the Ibanez Talmans... there's a Tele type bridge and a tremolo (Strat) version, depending on the year/model (some years they made both) and they're around on the 2nd hand market occasionally and pop up as NOS in little guitar shops around the globe it seems. The necks are sublimely good, with a great 'C' depth but isn't too wide... they kinda feel like playing a 50's Les Paul, but with the full 25.5" scale. They sound very much like their inspiration, but have (especially the Tele one) clever upgrades in body carve, weight, balance, etc that make them both unique and 'better' IMHO. I've played a few, but missed the opportunity to buy one a while back, which I've regretted since. There's the posh MIJ ones and a cheaper series, but both are very good. Like the G&L's (which would be equal favourite Strat or Tele - I already have one each American Professional Fenders so need not go there again) their resale isn't great here, but that makes them hard to buy because they seem to come on the market at the 'right price' and probably get snapped up by the first unsuspecting person who plays them; but if you can find one (and like the neck) they're sensational value for a 'keeper' axe :-)

I play a sea foam green Talman. I love it. The neck feels great and the tone is what I like. I play clean tones, no distortion. I did not mention it for two reasons. It can be in the $300-800 dollar price range, depending on where it was made. Also, they are heavier than I like, but, as an old fart, I play mostly sitting down now. So, weight is not an issue compared with a person standing and playing for hours with a guitar strap digging into your shoulder. Talman, a wonderful guitar. That is what I play.

Nick S. Hi. The guitar went from Germany to Montreal and with my Canada post app I paid the duty fee online before it even arrived at my door. Point is even with the conversion from euro to CAN $ and the $38 duty, the entire total was something like $338 and I am incredibly happy with the guitar for that price. These have exactly the same pickups as the American made ASAT. The biggest difference was they have a plastic nut. I ordered a Tusq nut, glued it in, adjusted it and it sounds great. I own a couple of Mexican made Telecasters that are great. I also own two American made Tele style guitars that were very affordable for American made instruments. Although, I must admit I have no idea about cost or availability outside the US. Logan Custom Guitars are made by Bob Logan in Delafield, WI. He buys unfinished necks but he cuts the body’s himself. He builds Fender Strat, Offsets, and Tele style guitars, but his preference is Tele style. You are able to choose the pickups you want from several major brands. His prices range from around $800-$1,300. I actually found my used (an Esquire with a Bigsby) for $650. Another reasonably priced option if you can find a used one is St. Blues Guitars. The company is located in Memphis, TN. Since the early 2010s all of their guitars have been made in Memphis. They did have a line of guitars made in Korea during the 2000s which can be found in $500 price range. I own a model from the Juke Joint Series which was a more affordable made in Memphis line that they started after they ended the Korean production. These guitars were priced comparable to American Standard Fenders when new, and the St. Blues higher end models were in $2,500 and up price point. Sadly, they have discontinued the Juke Joint Series, but they did lower the prices on their higher end guitars. My Juke Joint is a model called the Bluesmaster. It is shaped like a Les Paul Jr., but other than that it is a Telecaster all the way. Fender scale length, Fender style hardware and controls, with high end pickups(mine has Kent Armstrong pickups). I got mine used for $600.

I've had a Les Paul and an ES with a fat 50s style neck, once you get used to it, it's hard to go back to thinner necks. For the longest time, the 50s CV Telecaster was the best guitar Squier was making. I'm very impressed with their recent CV Strats, they are some of the best guitars they've ever made.

I have a 2010 Classic Vibe and love it. It is heavy but that is because it is built the way they were built originally, using a solid piece of pine. The pickups are excellent.I did switch them out for Tex Mex to try something else but found that the original pickups were just as good and they are alnico, not ceramic. I also installed a Fishman piezo bridge and pre-amp for the acoustic sound. I paid $350. CDN for mine (plus almost $400. for the fishman bridge) and they are now approaching $590. I gig with mine regularly.

I've played Fender Tele's that my friends have had and didn't play much, they didn't like the fat necks I guess. I couldn't afford either of them so I went looking for something other than Fender. I went on a trip out of state and slipped into a local music store. They had a series of T- style guitars called Aria Pro2-615. I played a couple of solid bodies and they played nice but were a bit heavy. Next, came a Thinline T-style and it fit me well. It was Light and the neck was nearly perfect for my hands. A light weight body and Alnico5 in both pickups. Sold. I walked out the door with it for about $325.oo New. Since then, I customized the top of the body to resemble a Mule steel face; ( I'm a Artist/painter) so that was easy and made all of the chrome metal look like black bronze and slightly worn. The maple neck fret surface looks like aged brass with worn fingering. But the neck for me needed to be just a bit thinner like my acoustic guitar is. Got brave with my woodworking tools and shaped it the way I wanted it. What an improvement! I took it over to my friends with the unused teles and they loved it's playability. Now I've got 2 teles to do a neck job on. There are non name brand guitars out there that are worthy up against other high end guitars. Pickups are universal these days. Swapping is simple. For tone? Hotter Alnico 5's are great, you can adjust down with higher output pkps but not up with Alnico2/3. There is pkp height adjustments for tone and balance plus, you have an amp with plenty of tone to chase. Make a guitar your own by getting brave and messing with what Leo Fender gave us, a very simple instrument that will accept changes that won't break your budget. Remember, you don't play the headstock.

Nah the Head Stock is everything. Your vibe has to be good. Your instrument must be a part of your mind, body & spirit. All other guitar playes must dig your vibe or your schtick/chops.riffs/melodies go straight out your 'headstock'.....into the Universe of cool space time.

For me, the headstock shape is important but not the name on it. A tele with an ugly shaped headstock is a distraction! I need a slim elegant headstock on a tele shaped guitar. 😁

I've taking a few squier parts, manly necks and some quality parts, I can make a petty decent guitar for $500 and to look down on a (small) strat headstock that says squier is a joy.

The SX headstock looks strikingly similar to a Brazilian brand called Tagima. that's sold here in the US Great guitars for the price point and their Strat style guitars are really good.

Love the vid man, I have the CV custom and its a nicely crafted guitar. Got mine used Mint for 399 canadian. Grabbing a strat next and am debating btwn the Mim player or G&L tribute legacy. Maybe one of those soon to be released 50s classic vibes thats gilmore black on black will be on the list too. Lots of great guitars just outside that inexpensive guitar price point.

What do you prefer. A flatter neck with glossy neck or a rounder neck with satin neck. IF you prefer the 1st, get the g&l and if you like the 2nd, get the fender

@@LSlick622 my experience is limited. The Cv tele I have has a very slender c. I think its fine but having never really played a fatter neck of alternative shape I cant say if its best for me. Got to get some hands on with variable types.

yeti goosecreature I bought one and I liked it so much, that I bought another used one within a week for modding. Every one I’ve seen is set up so badly, that they sound awful, but if you mess around with the set up and pick up height, they smooth out and sound kinda nice. It is a cheap guitar,(which I like), but well worth the ridiculously low cost. I think I paid $149 for the first one and $100 for the second. I’ve got guitars that cost considerably more, but can pick up one of these and it still puts a smile on my face. I’m not sorry I gave them a shot.

@@jray5363 fair enough. but I would change the pickups for higher spec - which could double the cost of the guitar - and begs the question as to whether it's better to pay more for a better guitar in the first place. ;)

Just bought the Harley Benton. Been looking for a cheap tele with a nice chunky neck. Never would have thought to get a German manufactured tele. Then watched your review on the HB, and was sold. Tuners....eh....if they're bad I'll replace them, but I think they'll be alright. The neck profile is what sold me.
