i like "Landscape Painting Essentials" by Johannes Vloothuis. He gives principles of art that applies regardless of your medium.

I'm glad you mentioned your book. I had started reading it but got side-tracked and this reminded me I need to finish it. I strongly recommend anyone who hasn't yet, should read it. I've found many things that were only briefly mentioned in a quick tip are explained in great depth in your book. It's truly a treasure to be able to see how things work "under the hood" so to speak. I enjoy the insights into the philosophy and spirituality of art as well. It has given me a deeper understanding and appreciation for all you do out of your love of art. Thank you!

Richard Schmid's book translates to about £70 if you're in the UK - honestly? I've backed horses for more money than that. It's virtually nothing when you consider what you'd actually be getting. Some people will spend thousands on a workshop, only to come away none the wiser. Others will spend over £100 on a tube of Lapis, just to end up with a hue inferior to Ultramarine Blue. I don't want to exhaust the point, but, it's an inexpensive investment into ourselves as budding painters. Also, Dianne, you've absolutely earned the right to plug your own book - for one, you had the good grace to actually film a video from start to finish without stopping the flow of conversation umpteen times to plug a special "foundation course" or a Patreon page, or a brush set, or a link to video with hundreds of ad breaks like SO many others on KZfaq do - I mean, I know people have a business to run, but good grief.

Thanks for your comment, Mr Snrub. I, too, get turned off by videos whose sole purpose is to plug something they are doing.

I know this is going to sound strange, LOL. I love watching your videos and I'm a long time subscriber, but a real favorite part for me is when you say, "Click on the bell".. the facial expression just reminds me of my art teacher who used to stress things like that. It just makes the Teacher in you come out even more! Thought I'd share that.

Color and light was one of the most fascinating books I’ve read (on your recommendations) and I read a lot, it really helped me see color in a new way. I have to write these suggestions down, they sound really good. I am glad you mentioned yours, otherwise I would have ;) It is invaluable, even for more seasoned painters

Thank you so much Diane for your recommendations, I now have them all in my Amazon cart for someday, but the Alla Prima (have heard so much about it) really is a much lower price at his website, as you mentioned.

I got a used copy of Ocvirk. Great book , I’m currently reading chapter 1 but I am worried if the book have any practice project for students? And because I got used, I didn’t get the cd rom. Is the practice supposed to be in the cd

I am not aware of a CD. There are practice exercises at the end of the chapters that can be helpful.

Carlson's Guide to Landscape Painting is notable absent. Is this because you think of it as a "how-to" book?
@IntheStudioArtInstruction
@IntheStudioArtInstruction Жыл бұрын
Right. Carlson has some valuable instruction, but is too formulaic for my philosophy of teaching.
