This combination of musicians is heavenly. The artists here were partners with Miles in some of his most daring adventures. This performance is OUTSTANDING. But not because these are musicians who have a magical command of their respective instrument (they do), but because they have the best ears on this earth. They know how to listen to what's happening on the bandstand. You can really "see" the listening happen at 2:18 and 4:34. This is indeed something that they honed during their tenure with Miles.. This was, if you will, the Miles Davis doctrine. Percussionist Airto Moreira said on the bandstand one night, Miles whispered in his ear " You listen ...... then you play". He said that was the greatest musical lesson that he had.. You see where the music at the moment is leading you, then you play. George Coleman was fired from Miles' band for this very reason. Miles heard him practicing solos in his hotel room that he then played on the bandstand.

What's that chord quality you hear Hancock repeat on 2:32 ?

Minor Major 7th - 'A' to be exact. Playing the 'D' in the right hand throws in a hint of the 11 for good measure.

The only way this band could get any more bad-ass is if Miles came back and joined them.
