absolutely shocking, you know it's bad when a commando doesn't even want to talk about it

What incredible kids they were. The average age of Patton's Blackhawk officers, and soldiers was 18 to 23. Dad said all the guys in his high school class of 44 were imeadiatly drafted. He turned 19 durring the battle of the Remagen Bridge, and the very night that they crossed over the Rhine. When my father passed away, I found his medals in a Chevis Regal bag in the back of his socks drawer. I put them back into his jewelry box where he kept them when I was a little kid. I used to look at them back then. They are sacred to me. He went to his first semester of college, two years after high school at the University Of Manilla! Said he took algerbra 1 there. He was a really fun guy too. Our family of 4 climbed Mount Katadan, in Maine, when I was 6yrs old. He was an adventurer at heart all his life, but mostly a great husband, and father. He told my mother at dinner on the first date that they were going to get married. She had just met him. I asked her what she thought of that. She said she thought he was nuts. They married 6 months later.

Visited Belsen in 1972. The smell of death was still there. The silence was haunting with not even one bird flying over the mass graves. There are several War Cemeteries nearby. Except for the Russian ones, they are impeccably kept and, like Belsen, hauntingly still and silent.

This breed of man will never never be seen again. What a huge loss to society.

@@djbfhffg I am afraid sir that I am not wrong. I wish I was. There is no one remotely like him today and never will be. Todays society has nosedived regarding real men. I am 81 so I have seen the comparison. I live in despair.

maybe not deliberately, but this comment implies that people who fight in modern wars dont count as veterans as there are still soldiers retiring from service

Displaced Persons, such as loads of liberated PoWs from various countries and people who'd been slave-labourers etc as well as some non-Germans who had been serving with the Wehrmacht and decided it was a good time to ditch their uniform.
