Thanks Cliff, I have to give this video a 7 out of 10. I'd give it a 10 but I have to save room for when you top this one. There were some contradictions between the sign information and the nice sounding informed lady. She stated the mule pulled the boat through but that is not so, according to the sign they poled the boat through against the ceiling, the mules walked over the top and back down the other side. The sign said the digging/blasting progress through was 5 "yards" a week. The lady said 5 "feet" a week. I'd say she is probably closer at 5 feet then the sign at 5 yards. It's all good information and great history.

When my parents first moved to New Hope PA in 92 the Mule barge was still giving rides up to Centerbridge on the DE canal. They kept the mules up in Phillips Mill. So cool 😎

Ebenezer Lake was a source of water for the summit level of the canal. Sections of the canal floor were lined with tar coated white oak planks to slow down leakage.

Awesome video, as always, and thank you for providing video of one of the boat tours through the tunnel. I've always wanted to do that but never had the opportunity. I'm looking forward to you exploring the section of the canal near Harper's Tavern/Bellegrove Rd. There was a significant aqueduct over the Swatara Creek, perhaps the largest on the canal...and the piers are still extant in the river to this day. That combined with the proximity of at least one existing lock, and a long dirt "fill" leading to the aqueduct...it'll be a fascinating section to walk (if you have the permission).

Wonder how deep it was?
@thehometownhistorian2398
@thehometownhistorian2398 Жыл бұрын
I think it's normally 5 to 8 feet deep along the canal. So the tunnel was a couple feet deeper. When we went it was only two or three feet deep and they said it should be three feet deeper. So it's my best guess.

The sign that Cliff videoed clearly stated the boatmen pushed the boat through using poles against the ceiling of the tunnel. The mules were walked over the top and back down the other side. When cliff shows the signs "paus" your computer and read them, Cliff does not stay on the signs very long nor does he show them all.

I have always wondered how the canal boats got through the tunnel without mules to pull it through. There is no towpath in there. Did they use manpower and poles to push it through? I am still enjoying this series. Thanks!
