Into the Wild [2007] is an American biographical adventure drama film written, co-produced, and directed by Sean Penn. The film recounts the true story of Christopher McCandless who, after graduating Emory University in 1990 abandoned his possessions, donated his entire $24,000 savings to charity, and hitch hiked across the US. Eventually McCandless ended up spending a winter in an abandoned bus in Alaska where he was later found dead. The family never wanted an autopsy, so the reason for his death remains a mystery to this day, yet Chris' desire to give up the modern world and escape to pure nature has inspired millions including myself.

Although this scene was indeed actually filmed in the Grand Canyon, with a base camp set up at Phantom Ranch in 2006, it is believed Christopher McCandless never really ran the rapids through the Grand Canyon. In real life McCandless’ car was found in the desert below Lake Mead after being tossed around in a flash flood. A park service ranger found it in October 1990 three months after McCandless abandoned it. In the meantime McCandless walked from Needles, CA to Topaock, AZ where he found an old aluminum canoe for sale. He bought the canoe and used it to paddle down the Colorado River to Mexico. To his surprise the river did not dump out into the ocean.

How do they know that Alexander didn't paddle the rapids, but did know that he was surprised the Colorado never emptied into the Pacific??

That's what sets up the tone of this scene. McCandless buries his belongings and looks upon his last check of everything he has to his name. Only to learn later that his mission to canoe down a river is met with heavy red tape and financial burden. This scene would have been better if they showed McCandless looking at the George Bush portrait as he left the office
