he traveled the world, went on a real adventure, meant many great unique people and touched and changed many lives . all along the way he had one goal. he achieved it. the whole story is just inspiring. nobody will deny that he made poor choices, most of us cant understand him because we have never walked in his shoes before. the fact that he died there in the place he journeyed so far to get to, and when he was done he tried to leave, but destiny wouldn't allow it.

Macrobiotic philosophy teaches one to live free like wild birds, fish and other animals do. To never work or be attached to money. To live as close to nature as possible. Personally I believe one should at least do this once for a period of time. Even if it cannot be maintained indefinitely.

I am very impressed. I loved the movie, and this song is a great companion piece. I hitchhiked about 10,000 miles through Australia and 3,000 miles through New Zealand when I was 18 and 19, and it's still the greatest adventure of my life. I'm now 50 years old. (How did THAT happen?) Anyway, thank you for posting this. hehe, the sound of his voice, or even the song/text it self doesnt matter. but what McCandless actually did with his life is a hell of a story to tell. Its what many of us would like to do but are too stuck in expectations of other people.. Sometimes saying "FU!!" to people, and doing it your way, is the way to go. but camping in the woods for a week isn't living in the wild.. remember that =)

Dude, he did have a lot of money. His family made lots of money, and he graduated at the top of his class and could have easily became rich and successful one day. had he lived, had those hunter showed up 3 weeks earlier to save him, he might have written an autobiography and it would have been a best seller. probably would donate the earnings or something but whatever. if he wanted to be rich he could have been so easily, and he grew up in a family where money was never really a problem.

He wasn't stupid, just careless. A simple topographic map of the area would save his life... Even without a map he could have gone along the river bank to look for spots with weaker current and the sad truth is he would have found places to cross the river safely. I doubt he had a death wish, just got too disoriented when sh*t hit the fan. He was a great person, no matter what happened to him there.

i don't think he disregaurded those who loved him. he definitely meant many new people who he certainly loved. but maybe the only way he could ever possibly do what he did was to cut off contact with his family. i mean anyone would be persuaded by a loving family to come back home, but that he be stuck living a life he wasnt meant for. but i who knows, he probably wanted to see them again when he left alaska. he goal was achieved

AGAIN, I have to clarify for someone who doesn't know what he's talking about. Chris never ate any toxic berries or seeds. His autopsy confirmed it. It was creative license taken by the filmmaker and others trying to make his death seem less...well, stupid and unnecessary. To argue that his decisions were "rationale" is an insult to rationale people. He took no map, he took no flares, there was an area to cross the river a 1/2 mile from where he was. He died of carelessness and stupidity.

The "mentally ill" are the people who consider "normal" a life based on wealth accumulation, greed, superficiality. They are the real losers: I am sure the minute before they die they will finally realize how miserable their existence has been. They do not live...they just exist. Chris LIVED!

Alex, he DID NOT die of poisoning from a plant. That was creative license. He died of stupidity. I sympathize with the parents and sister who loved him, but not because he died, because he didn't treat them with the love or consideration they wanted. He ignored and abandoned them in as selfish an act as one can imagine.

You guys that want to go out into the wild should remember that the movie is not factual. If Chris had a good map he would have survived . Chris lasted for less then 4 months and he died from starvation. Doesn't sound quiet as romantic as the movie does it? Basicaly he had no idea what he was doing and died because of it very quickly. He weighed just 33 kilograms (72 pounds). A horrible death.

To "find" himself? Yeah, he obviously went about it the right way since it killed him. No, we don't know the real story, but we do know his family was devastated by his selfishness. How does a phone call six months later prevent him from still "finding" himself? Even if he hated his parents, he claimed to care about his sister, but treated her like shit knowing she was be worried about him and he just didn't care. I wish the kid had lived, so we wouldn't have been exposed to his drivel.

So, anyone who doesn't want to walk away from a happy life to die alone in the wilderness doesn't "have the courage to do what he did"? OR, maybe there are people who don't have this massive inner turmoil and inability to exist the real world without contempt and disdain. It's really easy for people without money to damn materialism, but it's usually just an excuse to try and make themselves feel better for not having it.

I have a friend who hunts elephants with a bow and arrow, but he has enough common sense to hire a guide with an elephant gun to back him up in an emergency. If he decided to hunt the elephant with a bowie knife and no backup, you'd somehow find a way to defend that as not being a stupid act. I can show plenty of examples of no common sense (no map, no training, no flare gun, no clue). What did he do that evidences common sense to you?

The poisonous plant was a creative license taken by the director. It didn't happen! The autopsy didn't reveal any toxins in his system...though it's a lot more glamorous in the film to have him die from mistakenly eating a poisonous plant than reveal it was really because he was an unprepared idiot. What I don't get is why people are so desperate for a "hero" to idolize. Why not just take a non-material approach to the world and embrace that..what's so amazing about this guy to you?

Chris McCandless was extremely intelligent but also lacking in common sense. He was woefully unprepared for living in the Alaska bush when it was still cold and snowy. If he had bothered to get a good map, he would have known about the suspended ferry that spanned the river he couldn't cross due to the high volume of snowmelt. He probably also would have known about the inhabited cabins only six miles away.

The problem is, you seem to expect everyone to see the world through your eyes. If you despise materialism, renounce it and find happiness in a non-material world. Just don't condemn people who pursue or are able to find happiness that, in a large or a small degree, can be found living a life of comfort. The reason I feel McCandliss was a fool is not because he didn't want a big house or nice car, but his disregard for people who loved him and his stupids actions that lead to his death.
@crhood2166

I certainly don't know the whole story about his family, but he claimed to love his sister, yet let suffer and worry all that time without so much as a postcard. So, either he was lying about how he felt and wanted to hurt her, or just didn't care if he did. That's a piece of shit in my book, either way. I have no idea what you mean "feel safe". I don't feel particularly "safe" or "at risk"?!?!? And I think you meant "blinders" and not "blinkers".
@ALLinALLgood

The distress note below was purposely not part of the movie. Attention possible visitors. "S.O.S. I need your help. I am injured, near death, and too weak too hike out of here. I am all alone, this is no joke. In the name of God, please remain to save me. I am out collecting berries close by and shall return this evening. Thank you, Chris McCandless. August ?" He screwed up and in the end no longer though of himself as the free-spirit Alex Supertramp. Movie romantic, reality not.

His parents may very well have come up short and his actions may or may not have been a direct attempt to hurt them or prove a point. However, he claimed to love his sister, yet had no problem abandoning her without a word as well, knowing full well how she must certainly have worried about him and didn't warrant a single phone call to assuage her concerns. Sounds like a selfish douchbag to me.

A non-judgemental question. Why idolize his views on life instead of making them your own? Isn't the whole idea of his philosophy that anyone can put aside the material world. What is stopping you (and others) who want to prescribe to this way of life, but haven't?
@crhood2166
@crhood2166 15 жыл бұрын
If toxins contributed to his death, there would still be evidence of them in his system at the autopsy. There was not. And I'm sure he even thought he did eat something poisonous at the pain he felt when his body was shutting down from starvation. Either way, his death certainly wasn't "tragic", if anything, it was tantamount to suicide. I don't understand why you people who idolize him can't just admit, "I really respect his views on life, but damn, he was stupid there at the end"?

"fatal mistake"? If he'd gone out into the Alaskan wilderness with only his pajamas and slippers, would that be a fatal mistake or stupidity? You can argue his ideals were appealing, but his actions were moronic and lead to his death. And why do you say "I want to model my life" instead of just doing it? What's stopping you? If you're not happy in your life, do something about it...don't try to convince yourself my life is unhappy or "a lie" because you're not content.
