Intonating guitar Les Paul style | How to intonate a guitar
In this video I talk about intonation! I demonstrate the process of intonating a guitar, in particular intonating a Les Paul style guitar using my Vintage V100. However, the principles demonstrated can be used as help to set guitar intonation on any electric guitar.
Hopefully after watching this video you should have a fairly clear idea of how to set guitar intonation, and avoid your instrument driving you mad by being in tune in one place on the neck but not another!
When you've watched this video and your guitar is perfectly in tune and intonated, why not take a look at some of my Guitar Soloing Tips tutorial videos! Here's a link to the playlist....

With the tiny gold screws on my Wolf (WLP750) even with flashlight and magnifying glass I couldn’t get a good slot or Phillips screw contact to turn. That gold paint, I guess. Detuning and pulling off the E String, a very small Phillips screwdriver got the turn. I must say overall I am very impressed with the Wolf version of the Les Paul. Thanks for your video.

Great video. I just dropped string gauges on my sg and realized that has thrown off my intonation. Very happy with the gauge drop (low for an sg but I think I enjoy it more). I went from 11-48 to 9-42. Might go up to 10-46 not sure yet but I sure to like playing it better like this after 5 years with the heavy

a couple of things here. one, you need to set the guitar up completely first. if it was already setup before and is now trending sharp or flat, you should adjust the truss rod first as that is the likely culprit on the les paul. once that is done, then intonate it if needed. the other thing is that you should never do this while it is laying flat like that. you should do it in the playing/hanging position because most guitar necks will move ever so slightly while laying like that. same for any tuning. end rant.

Hey Paul great video. But i have a problem, I know this video was about 5 years ago and you may not be a guitar repairist. BUT whenever I move my saddle the pitch of the string does not change. It's like the saddle is just sliding along the string and not actually pulling it. I was wondering if you have a solution to this.

Fretted: flat? Forward! Gr8 acronym,very useful - thank you! Acronyms and silly littke word play phrases are behind the most longheld useful little life hack codes I've found over the years. For me, at least. Like "Lefty Loosie -Righty Tighty" or "Never Eat Soggy Weetbix". Anyway, thx for the lesson. I kinda knew most of it already, but always got lost, never quite sure if I was turning the screws the right way or not. Eventually I couldn't trust my own ear and would pack it in as "good enough". Hey, question. I've ordered a new guitar and it's a Gibson SG Special. It has the "lightning tailgate" but no tun-o-matic... Any tips for maximizing whatever intonation I can get? Cheers 😎👍

I have a Epiphone Les Paul custom pro tuxedo , I have had it intonated twice in the first year of owning it. I use EB extra slinky's and have checked the neck for any out of whack problem's but it look's pretty straight with the slotted straight edge. I have also checked the fret's and nothing seem's to be out of place no buzzing. The problem is that within a few weeks the guitar goes out of intonation. I was wondering if possibly the wood used was still too moist and not allowed to dry long enough, it was made in Korea by world music. My roomie who has been playing for 45 year's said he has never seen a guitar act in this way before. I wonder if anyone has any advice for me about what i can do to fix it before I just give it away to someone who has the time and knowledge to fix this.

Hello. Tks for the video. Quick question. I’ve intonated the string at the 12 fret, but other frets fail to intonate. Like if I play an A chord on the 2nd fret, it’s in tune, but on the 14th fret is not. Any suggestions? (Epiphone LP, ultra II)

Greetings from 2020! Thank you for this very simple tutorial! I’ve done this twice now, and I must say, I can’t move on without doing this after setting up a new set of strings. There is one question that I have. That phrase, “Fret.Flat.Forward”...what if you’ve maxed out on your saddle if one of your strings is experiencing, “Fret.Sharp.Backward”? How would you fix that? Thank you advance.
@BarrStar91
@BarrStar91 3 жыл бұрын
I'll tell you brother. When you experience this issue either which way, whether you're moving your saddle up or down, if you run out of room to keep moving u or down, you need to: • stop what you're doing and Loosen whatever string you are tuning • loosen the string enough for you to be able to pick up the string and pop it off of your saddle completely • unscrew the saddle screw completely off and set it to the side • Take your saddle out and turn it upside down or another words flip it around. **** This is for for your saddle to move longer. Ultimately the flat part of the saddle will be longest facing away or towards the butt end of your guitar. In other words if you run out of room on the top e string and you look down and the flat part of your saddle is facing up then turning around where it is facing down and it will have longer vibration travel on that e string***** • regardless of what I said above, you have already tooken your string off and saddle screw, and lastly you've already flipped your saddle around or was supposed to. So even if what I said above goes against the fact that you're saddle is facing one way or the other you might as well try it flipped so put your screw back on the saddle •put your string back on the saddles string seat • tune that string back to its proper open stanard tuning • continue your intonation
@BarrStar91
@BarrStar91 3 жыл бұрын
I probably could have shortened that whole comment to a simple just flip your particular saddle around facing the opposite direction for longer length. Haaa

That means one (or both) of your pickups are too close to the string. The magnets on the pickups are interfering with the movement of the string when it's vibrating.

I'm not sure if you mentioned this butyou really should only do intonation on a new pre stretched set of strings and not go adjusting intonation on an already worn set of strings. Reason being when you put a fresh set on ,guess what, your intonation will be set to the worn set and then have to do the whole process again
