Explanation of Crosstalk and demonstration.
I demo Crosstalk with my friend Kamil, I speak Japanese, my friend speaks his native Polish.
We are both complete beginners and started the conversation with virtually zero knowledge of the other person's language.
Crosstalk is a way of doing language exchange, in which each partner speaks only the language that the other person is learning.
It's more efficient than regular languages exchanges, less stressful, allows you to pay more attention, can be used to start learning a language from zero, and is generally just a lot of fun.
To learn more about Crosstalk, you can read my blog post about it:

My mind is blown right now. I've been a bit skeptical of "comprehensible input" with respect to foregoing more traditional methods. Though I still have reservations in terms of the "comprehensible input" methodology being the best for everyone, this video motivates me to fully incorporate the method in both learning and teaching languages. Thank you so much for backing up what you teach. I clearly have much to learn!

I believe in this method! When I was little I listened to my mom's family speaking their dialect a lot, and I can speak it even though I never tried to speak a word of it before. I'm looking for a cross talk partner who speaks Spanish or Japanese, I speak English and Chinese, if anyone's interested let me know.

Love it! I have also read the blog explanation. Let's say you start this way with a new language. How often do you suggest meeting with your cross-talk partner? What happens as far as your learning of the language? Do you then remember certain words and then go study other methods and the other methods and the cross-talk reinforce each other? Do you remember more and more words as you continue cross talking? At some point do you start speaking your target language?

Do it as much as you can! At least an average of 1h a day is good to see progress. Crosstalk doesn't require you to use other methods. It is enough to acquire vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation. Sooner or later you will also want to get other sources of input, though, since there's quite a bit of vocabulary that doesn't usually come up in regular conversation. Also, you will need to read a lot if you want to be able to read fast and to learn how to spell.

I'm enthused by the idea of Crosstalk, but I'm concerned it requires a kind of learning skill I don't have. For all the drawings, I could pick-out very little meaning from the Polish words Kamil said, even while understanding almost every word Pablo was saying. When I did, it was with some big clue. For example around 19:15 Kamil points to a snowflake and says 'śnieg' pointing to the snowflake Pablo had been drawing for some seconds. I got that one because it sounds like 'Schnee' in German (which actually is the word as I heard it) and because of the snowflake Pablo was drawing, and because I already understood what Pablo was saying. But my impression is that Pablo was understanding hugely more from the conversation than I was. Whereas, around 28:48 Kamil starts drawing a snowboard next to the guy skiing. Pablo understands and says something like 'ka bolga' (?) that I didn't recognise in Ja/Es/En and I was completely lost while K&P seemed to understand each other well. Watching the session, I realised it needs skills of being able to instantly encapsulate an idea in a very simple illustration, and of instinctive body-language gestures I've never developed (perhaps even culturally learned to suppress). And at the same time as my CPU is busy with both of these, try to focus on the meaning of the unknown language. I'm at the same time enthusiastic about the promise, but doubtful I could do it. Anyway, I'm going to try to find someone to try it out with. Although probably not in languages where either of us are ab initio.
@pabloroman1
@pabloroman1 4 жыл бұрын
When we were talking about skiing I actually said: スキー…かボードか? That said, such a small thing doesn't need to throw you off! There was very little meaning really communicated by that question, it was actually just me throwing a guess at the question that Kamil was asking. Maybe you are expecting to understand many of the words? It's not like that at all at the beginning. I picked up almost zero meaning from the actual words that Kamil said. I relied on his drawings, and what seems reasonable for the current context, and always allow a great deal of ambiguity and uncertainty to be present. You need to focus on what you are understanding, and ignore all the noise and all the things that are not important for understanding the message. To communicate by drawing is certaintly a skill. You can get better at it by practicing Crosstalk, but also by watching Dreaming Spanish videos, or other videos by people who follow my style.

@@pabloroman1 Ahhh. Got it now. Thanks! (In fact I'm really bad at hearing skills... I can even hear conversations or songs in my own languages for minutes before I gradually realise their in English.) Anyway, thanks for your advice. I'm struggling with finding a language partner. Every person wants to practice speaking their English and want me to practice Spanish (or whatever language I'm learning at the moment). I try to explain it but....maybe they just don't want to or think it won't work for them? What would you suggest for how I should approach this?
@pabloroman1
@pabloroman1 4 жыл бұрын
I always explain how I want to do it before I meet with people. Around half the people are okay with doing crosstalk. Some people still tell me that I should practice speaking, but I tell them that it works for me and that I've done it before multiple times and they usually accept that. Are you living in an English-speaking country? Maybe the people you find already have a high level of English? You could try looking for people with a lower level of English.

Do you still use this at an intermediate or advanced level? I speak Italian every day with my partner but I also want to level up my listening skills, do you reckon crosstalk with some non- fluent English speakers could actually be more beneficial, potentially? I guess sometimes I use speaking as a way of avoiding listening (out of fear of not understanding), so I might get a lot out of the Crosstalk.

Watch a video by Dr brown using something similar for Arabic. Instead of the arabic speaker drawing, he had them talk about and explain existing images from magazines, kids books and so on. He brought the books in for them. He did a lot of his initial few hundred hours like this. After he did normal exchanges but still wanted them to explain drawings and other images to him. ... He now uses simple stories to teach spanish and has many videos on youtube of him doing it.

Hi Pablo, I'm not sure if you will see this. I'm interested in finding a Crosstalk partner for learning Spanish. I live in Los Angeles, so I know plenty of Spanish speakers in real life. However, they are all fluent English speakers. Will this method still work when one of the speakers is already fluent in the other language? I'd like to ask some friends/family to see if they would be willing to do this with me -- but I realize they won't really benefit from the experience (they already know English). I assume that as long as they are willing, this method should still work, correct?
