I just found a Tektronix 475A at a thrift store for $40 tested it before I bought it and it works. I was so shocked people were walking right by it!

That was a terrific review of the 465. I own one and have been using it for quite some time, but I wish I had found this video before I started using it. I like the normalized output on the back for the FrequencyCounter and will employ that ability immediately.

Nice video about a great scope. I just finished repairing mine it had a shorted out bridge rectifier I just finished fixing it and cleaning it up. Still works like a hot damn. Documentation I have says it came out in 1972. I have no idea cost $1700 back in the day. Like you said I think this is a great scope for a first timer. 100 MHz and you can probably find one on eBay for 200 or less.

I've had my 465 for years and only now found someone that knows anything about how to use it. I am grateful for your video. I love electronics and now that I'm retired I might have time to really learn. I have my Ham radio,s and am just learning about flying drones and both will be great subjects for this. lol I hope you have a great new year. Chuck

I have one of these (It's the "B" model, but the basics are the same) that my dad used for years in his computer tech job. This has been a handy walk through the controls! I have downloaded a manual, but would love to get my hands on a paper copy...been watching eBay.

Thank you for the introduction to this scope. I was given one as a gift, but I’m used to modern mixed signal digital scopes. Sadly, my 465 just popped the GFCI, so I have to diagnose and maybe get the internal power supply caps replaced.

Thank you for this video. I bought one of these and fired it up last night. Unfortunate the display traces went out. Sounds like they have a common issue with a tantalum capacitor in the 15 volt unregulated supply which causes a fuse to blow. I only know that because of other KZfaq videos, not because I’m smart. Hoping I can fix it and use it after seeing this video!

I think I have the same issue, my display is a series of dashes running across the screen - not a solid line as in this video. Just be sure to read the service instruction manual and be safe!

Thank you for this video. Bought this same scope almost a year ago and it has been my goto scope. Just this morning I was looking at why the 10 20 50 volts/div aren't available. I never did find an answer but my guess is that it was a cost savings issue just using the plastic guide on different models.
@RetroLogicLaboratory
@RetroLogicLaboratory 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah the 465 is a bit confusing that way, I was frustrated a bit trying to figure the same thing out at one point. As it turns out the 10,20 and 50 volts/div aren't full modes on their own, 10,20 or 50 will light up when you set the probe to 10x. i.e. if at 5v, but probe is at 10x the 50v mode should be lit up on the dial even though the dial does not physically move that far. I think you need to use a real TEK probe to make the light illuminate; there's a little pin on the TEK probes to signal they are in 10x mode. Also the light can burn out (my scope has that problem) so it won't indicate 10,20 or 50v modes....
@garbleduser
@garbleduser 7 жыл бұрын
The light on the right comes on when the left goes out due to the official vintage 10x tek probes having an estra post on the outside making contact to the outer ring around the BNC jack. Short the outer bnc connector to the ring, (possibly with a 1m ohm resistor, not sure, don't have an old probe to measure) and the lights will reverse. if you look very closely at the base of the connector protruding through the face of the scope, you will slap your forehead and laugh!

I got one of these from my grandfather 12 years ago and just started to explore it and realize its strong following. Powered it on after cleaning and visually inspecting the internals for any problems. Everything looked fine and it powered up and produced a trace. No signals fed so no vertical deflection observed. It ran for 10 -15 minutes then went dark. Main line fuse blew. Going to read through the manual and troubleshoot the power supply first and take it from there.

Go to the voltage test points and check all of the voltages. Usually one of the rails is low and needs new filter capacitor or bridge rectifier(mine had this problem). Sometimes that's all it is. Also check the rails for a short to ground. Sometimes as mentioned, a tantalum cap can short too, and that could also be the cause if you have a bad rectifier and blown fuse. Start there. Plenty of info in the manual to help you do this, but again, start here.

When I started with electronics, the digital ocilloscopes already exists. Recently I decided to have an analog one, and decided to buy a Tektronix 465 watching your video. Here in Brazil it is dificult to find good equipment, but I finally bought one. Everything seems to be working fine, except for some leds in the front pannel. But there is one specific button you didn't mention and I am curious. What does that "Trig View" button, under the ch1 vertical scale switch does?
@RetroLogicLaboratory
@RetroLogicLaboratory 6 жыл бұрын
Hi, sorry for the slow reply my life has been very busy lately. The Trig View button allows you to see the voltage level the A Trigger is set to. If you press it down, then adjust the A trigger level, the beam will show the trigger voltage. PS I worked in Brazil on a project several years ago in Rio. Such a great country!

I want to learn to use this animals just for small type repairs I can do myself to maybe fix some audio amps I have. Also what course if I went that rout would I need to take to learn about this unit? Conestoga collage here as I am in Ontario can. I see you are also from Canada THANKS.

I just purchased a Tektronix 465 scope at a good price and being a novice with electronics, I wasn't sure if the machine was working correctly...After watching this video, you taught me quite a bit about the controls...After rigging up Keuwlsoft Dual Function Generator on my smart phone, I was able to generate various waveforms...Now, I want to learn how to troubleshoot circuits in my radio with the use of this scope...

Hi, sorry for the slow reply. I am no expert in repairing the TEK 465, but my first guess would be to borrow another set of probes from someone just in case its something simple. If not, I think the low voltage power supply can be a potential issue. I've been fortunate enough to not have any issues with mine yet!

I was hoping you can help me understand why the volt/div has a lit window that shows 5V/div and just to the right there is another window that I figure means a X10 "50v/div" but I cant figure out how to use this. can you help? Thanks
@RetroLogicLaboratory
@RetroLogicLaboratory 5 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for watching my video. I hope I understand what you are referring to - basically, when you switch the probe to x10, the little window is supposed to light up. There are two catches though to that; 1, it will only light up with a probe that has the little extra pin thing on the side of the connector. Technically this is called a "probe with scale factor switching connector", if you google it you'll see what I mean. The second catch is that the x10 light is often burnt out on these scopes. Which makes it confusing because some ranges are only accessible via x10.... Having said that, the actual switching between x1 and x10 is entirely within the probe itself, the light only shows the status.

@@RetroLogicLaboratory Thank You for getting back to me. I now see see that the BNC connector "GND" has a 57K resistance to the face of the BNC. I suppose that is where the extra pin would connect to scope. Thank again.

Learn how to repair electronics and be safe around electronics. The repair component to fix it aren’t insane. And there isn’t that many parts inside even if you hypothetically had to check every part. There like 10,000s if volts of the cathode ray tube. So yeah the only catch is you can die trying to fix it if you’re not careful. So I guess there’s that lol...
